Petra was able to come home last evening (about 24 hours after surgery) and she is doing pretty well. Getting around okay but I can tell it is a strain on her existing rear leg. Hoping that will improve. Her appetite is great and she is peeing but no poop yet. Last night she woke up every couple of hours and would be whining but it wasn’t too hard to get her settled back in after some loving/meds/potty as needed. I hate seeing her struggle to walk and I’ve had a few moments of wondering if I made the right decision. I know from reading through the forums that this is common in early recovery days so not getting too worked about it. She’s on a standard cocktail of NSAID, Gabapentin, and Tramadol. She did have Nocita, injection during surgery, too, so I’m sure that’s helping keep the pain at bay. We spent about an hour in the sunshine today which I know she enjoyed.

Hoping she has a more restful night tonight and more improvement tmrw.

I’m right there with you.  My dog Cooper is on day 4 after His right front leg amputation.  It’s the scariest and hardest thing I’ve had to do.  He is eating great and peeing/pooping almost normal.  I’ve had the same thoughts, was this the right or wrong decision but I have to remember what my vet said.  Don’t look back.  Best wishes to you and Petra.

Yay Petra! Yep, you've got some great pain medication and that can certainly cause you to feel a little sluggish and not too hungry. Rest up, it's purely medicinal and will help you heal.

Jill, stay strong. Your attitude is great and this is very, very early in the recovery process. She will get stronger in time and things will feel less worrisome. We all doubted our decision at one time or another in the early days, and I can tell you that things do get better. Hang in there!

Please let us know how your sweet pup is doing OK? I hope your holiday is restful and snuggly with your 3-legged hero.

Petra is so darn cute!!!!

Yes, I was one who second guessed myself at first for many days and wondered what in   the world I had done TO my dog!!   I didn't find this community  until day six and they educated  me on what recovery  looked like, etc.  They threw me a lifeline of information and support.  It took me awhile, but I was finally able to say I did this FOR my Happy Hannah!

Because  dogs are so resilient,  it's hard to remember they just had MAJOR surgery, all while adjusting  to three legs and on good pain meds!!!

No worries about being unsteady on her feet.  Some dogs aren't  even mobile at all for the first couple of days.  Sloooow snd easy. Lots and lots of rest.

Based on what uou've described, it sou ds loke Petra is mdoing well for soooo early in recovery.   It's no picnic for about two weeks,  but recovery  doesn't  last furever!!!

TRY and get some sleep....even of it's just an hour here and there.  My Happy Hannah was quite restless any whining  the first several nights and I was exhausted mentally  and phusically.

STAY CONNECTED  and update when you can.  We're  here to help in anyway we can.

Hugs

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
