Bat has been having issues with his back paw. We though he probably tore a ligament. Unfortunately after Xrays the Dr is 85% sure it is bone cancer. Since it doesn't show that it has spread they recommended we remove his leg.  Our sweet boy will be coming home tomorrow. Our first boy Remy had Lymphoma and we did chemo. I will never do that again. I am looking for advice on how to care for my sweet boy when he comes home and any homeopathic treatment. We will not know what kind or stage until the biopsy comes back.I would love to hear others stories and suggestions. i am still in complete shock since this has all happened within a few days.

Hi Bat and family, we are so sorry you had to join our club! It's the one nopawdy wants to join, especially after already dealing with cancer. But we are here to help and hopefully make it a much better experience than you had last time around. My heart goes out to you for Remy. I'll bet that sweet pup is watching over you now to make sure that Bat and you had many, many more happy times together.

It's good that you caught it quickly and did something right away. Osteosarcoma pain is terrible, so getting rid of that bad leg is a total relief for Bat. Tell us more about him. What's he like? How old/young?

As for recovery and treatment guidance I would start with our e-books library if you haven't seen those, and you can also check out our articles like our What to Expect series and Jerry's Required Reading List . My best advice right now is to 1) make your home ready with no-slip floors and good traction (carpet runners if you have slick floors), and 2) keep a pawsitive attitude. Bat will look to you to set the tone for recovery so the more optimistic and hopeful you can be, the better it will!

If you are looking at homeopathic care for him, check out our Tripawds Nutrition blog posts about homeopathic treatments. Many members have had good success. And while I know you've had a bad experience with chemo before, remember that Bat is a different dog with a totally different cancer. It couldn't hurt  to consult with an oncologist, so that you can feel better about whatever decisions you make. There are no right or wrong choices, but information is power and it give us confidence in our choices too. We will support you no matter what.

Good luck with the homecoming and please keep us posted oK? We would love to see photos of your pup. Here's how adding images to the Forums works, let us know if you'd like help.

Hi and welcome.

I'm sorry you are dealing with cancer again but glad that you found us.

To echo Jerry- tell us more about Bat- age, size, type of dog.

I've had two small rear amp Tripawds.  The first was Maggie, a Pug who lost her leg to mast cell cancer.  I can really relate to being overwhelmed- we went from diagnosis to surgery to her being home very quickly....and that was before Tripawds existed!  It was so hard to see how the best option to treat a bump in her knee was removing the entire leg.

We did do chemo after her surgery- in part because I had thought the surgery would be curative for her.  She had some slow times but nothing terrible- in the same circumstances I would do it again.

But that is not to say chemo is right for every one or every dog. I've actually dealt with 3 cancers in two dogs and all three times chemo was recommended.  I chose to do chemo once and declined the other two situations although I did meet with our oncologist all three times.  I'm a big believer in gathering all information and knowing all the options.  In the end you make the best decision for your family and your dog and around here we support every one in their decisions!

Mag's little sis Tani also had mast cell cancer and we went the holistic route with her.  We met with a vet who practiced holistic medicine and she helped me with Tani's diet and some herbal supplements.

Keep us posted on how Bat is doing and when you get him home.
