Plan to ask this to the vet as well, but curious as to when most of you tripawd owners started to back down on your dogs pain meds? Oakley seems extremely comfortable and in zero pain but at times I wonder if he is a little to “doped”.

Oh that good boy! Look at him chill out with the big ol' donut. Looks like that cone alternative is working out?

He's a champ! smiley_clap You sound refreshed too, I'm sure the quality sleep helped. Yipee!

As for backing off on pain meds, most new Tripawds are on them for at least the 10-14 days after surgery, until stitches come out. Some, longer. It really depends on the dog as Akeela's situation shows. It sounds like you are keeping a good handle on Oakley's pain and staying ahead of it. That's terrific. If you think he's too spaced out, let your vet know some of the signs you are seeing. Any incontinence? Loss of balance? Reluctance to eat? Those are all signs that he. may be getting too much medication.

Keep in mind that right now, rest is medicinal for him and my guess is that the pain meds are helping him relax and let nature work its magic on healing the surgery site and helping him get strong.

The donut was the best purchase we made on the ride home. I just couldn’t picture him with the large cone of shame for so long.  With this he looks like he has an airplane neck pillow on and is ready to go on an adventure!

I think the meds are about right... I checked with the vet and they felt satisfied with where he was at.  No bathroom problems except for us not picking up on his signal two nights ago that he had to go.  At least once every twelve hours or so he will have a bout of panting and look a bit loopy.  I’m assuming this is when they hit him the most in the cycle of medicine.

Hi Paul!  Oakley looks so cute and it sounds like he is doing so, so well in his recovery!  Yay for Oakley!  The every 12-hour episodes sounds like they are timed with when his meds are cycling.  I used to give Griffin all of this meds together, but some of the experts here  recommend staggering them to best complement each other and ensure that there are no dips in when his pain is managed.  You might want to share Oakley's meds schedule to see if there are any ideas about tweaks to avoid those panting/loopy bouts.  Hugs to you and Oakley!  ~ Stacy

Griffin lived an amazing life for 11 years! Diagnosed with osteosarcoma on March 17, 2020, Griffin's right forelimb was amputated on April 2, 2020. Ten days later he was running and playing fetch! Lung metastasis discovered in July 2020 did not slow down Griffin and he lived joyfully for the next 7 months, passing peacefully at home on February 11, 2021. https://griffin.tripawds.com

Oh you hoppy boy Oakley! Look at that giant tongue, it's so happy to taste the sunshine smiley16

I love the cushy rest area you made for him.

Oakley looks so happy to be outside!  And he is probably doubly happy that you are the one who has to do the yard work, Paul!  ~ Stacy

5/2/20:

Oakley had good day. He got to spend a little time outside and has jumped on the couch on his own a few times (which is only slight nerve racking). He still requires a lot of supervision, but is becoming more and more sufficient at getting himself around. He seems to want to be moving around and getting up to follow us a little more often and we are trying to make sure he gets plenty of rest. We really appreciate all the happy thoughts and prayers. ❤️

you're doing a great job of looking after Oakley and Oakley seems to be doing a great job of looking after himself. 👍He's taking things slow and steady and at his own pace. Good boy!😎

His pictures speak volumes about how happy he is.😊

Hi Paul,

Oakley seems to be doing great! Getting up on the couch all on his own is pretty awesome and impressive. I'm sure he's really happy to have the donut instead of the cone, and he gets to have a pillow wherever he goes. I wish him a steady recovery and look forward to the updates!

5/3/20: Didn't have time to write an update today but wanted to share this one my wife wrote on Facebook...

”Paul, Odie, Oakley and I are grateful for how much time we have had together recently. It was a beautiful day and we spent time outside while Paul finally had the time to put together our new deck furniture we bought a month ago. Oakley got his last dose of tranexamic acid this morning and we are hoping one less medication will make him a little more himself (he still has to take his pain meds for a little longer). Overall, he is doing well and getting better every day on three legs. We just love seeing his beautiful smile. ❤️“

I don't think I've ever seen a dog look so hoppy while wearing a cone of shame ! Oakley you are just pure sunlight and joy, it really shows in your eyes and facial expressions. Would you mind if we shared your photo in our Tripawds Gallery? It's just adorable.

How fun that you got to watch dad get your new patio together. You're gonna have lots of good times out there!

Thanks for the pupdate.
