My cat had her back leg amputated 3 days ago, she came home 2 days ago. She didn’t eat well for the vets, had a small amount of wet food when she got home, and 12 temptations treats last night. We haven’t been able to get her to eat or drink anything else. We’ve tried all types of wet food, treats, hard food, real food, she won’t eat anything. She’s getting .75 mg of gabapentin 3x a day in liquid form and hates it.
We called the vet and they said she may have to go back in for them to make her, but we are worried it will only stress her out more. Are there other things we can try, is there a need to go to the emergency vet before mine opens? When should I be worried? (More worried I guess, since I’m already worried)

Hi and welcome. Your future posts won't need approval so post away. I'm so sorry she is having appetite issues. If it's any comfort that is not uncommon. A few questions. I know there's a lot but we might be able to give you some ideas based on the answers:

What is your cat's name and age?

Does she have any other medical issues that were going on before surgery?

Could she be constipated? This can make any animal feel lousy.

How is her incision? Is it warm or looking infected at all?

What is the dosage of Gabapentin that she is getting?

Is she on any other pain control?

Are you putting her medication in her food? If so, don't. That will turn her off eating completely.

Of course you are worried, it's a stressful situation. If going to the ER will help you feel better then yes, go. When was the last time you spoke with your vet? If it was today and they recommended going in tomorrow, my guess is that it will be fine to wait until morning. But I'm not a vet fwiw so please go with whatever they advised.

Luna is 9 this year. She has porphyria, which the vet said is rare but is not concerning as she has likely had it her whole life, but she does has a slight anemia.
We called the vet a few more times, we picked up an appetite stimulant and she is doing much better, now we are just fighting to keep her from being too active and licking her incision.
She is also doing much better with the Gabapentin, but it was a very stressful few days for us.

Oh YAY! Thanks for updating us about Luna, I'm so glad things are looking up. Your vet sounds terrific! What appetite stimulant is she using? Finding one that cats will tolerate is so tricky sometimes.

I had never heard of porphyria, thanks for the enlightenment, I just looked it up.

We were given mirtazapine? Applied once a day to her inner ear. She seems to have no issues and is definitely back to eating and drinking!

Just catching  up on your sweet Luna in time,to celebrate  that she is doing  better!👏👏

Love the idea of the appetite  srimulant being applied to the ear.,,sounds novel to me, but then again, cats do things there way!
