Hi There. My husband and I are proud parents of Tucker a 6 year old 120lb hound mix.

Tucker was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma of his right rear leg in late July. We were able to get placed in a clinical trial with Friendship Hospital in Washington DC. He underwent his amputation on August 20th. He was placed in the Chemo group (we were hoping for the immuno-therapy group, but he's still gonna get great treatment) and will have his first chemo treatment on Sept. 4th. We live in South Carolina so we'll be driving up for his treatments, he did really great after his surgery on the trip.

So right now he's pretty lethargic, but able to hop around to go on short walks  and use the bathroom. He's eating and drinking. We know this time will pass, even though it's really hard. I have read a lot about chemo side effects, which seem to vary, but don't sound to horrible. Fingers crossed!!

We are considering going down to Orlando for a week in early October, this would 3 days after his 2nd Chemo treatment. We would be taking him and is brother Dodger with us and they would be with us in a fenced in Air BnB. My question is this. Would that be too soon to let him go to doggy daycare? If too soon, would he be ok in his crate for 4/5 hours at a time? We have done this with him in the past so this is not new, but I just wanted to see if anyone else has had to make this decision. I would prefer to take him to doggy day care and let him play a few times throughout the day and rest in a kennel the rest of the time. Thoughts?

Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I'm sorry cancer and amputation have brought you here but glad you found us!

It sounds like Tucker is doing well about 9 days post amp. Be sure he is not too active- our surgeon said only short, leashed potty breaks for the first two weeks post surgery.

As far as day care in October- I think it would depend on how fit he is by then and how much supervision he would get there. I have friends who take their Tripawds to day care without issue but they are around the same dogs all the time.  You might also ask the oncologist if they would have any issues with traveling or Tucker being around different dogs.  I don't think I've heard of there being issues with this but it's always better to ask to be sure.  The good thing is it would be after the second chemo so you should have an idea how he handles the first dose.

I don't have experience with crate training so I can't really comment on that.  My current two small dogs came from rescues and can't be crated due to their histories.
