Hi Mando and Red, welcome! Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away.

It's great that he is doing so well! The hot weather, plus the chemotherapy treatment, can definitely throw his appetite off. Is he licking his lips, or dooling? Those are signs of nausea. He should get his appetite back soon but you can help him feel better within a day at most by asking your vet for an anti-nausea medication like Cerenia or Ondansetron. See if they can get you a prescription today.

Hi!  My guy Shadow only had nausea/loss of appetite with his chemo on his first round, and then by chance just this morning on his last (6th) round. Ondansetron has worked great for him. One dose and he’s feeling better within an hour or so and ready to eat again. I would really recommend getting some from your vet!  Good luck!

One more thing….Shadows biggest symptom during chemo has always been diarrhea about 3-5 days in. I hope your pup doesn't have any issues with that!  If he does, the metronidazole is great, so hopefully they gave you some to use proactively. But Shadow still had some challenges even while on that and the vet recommended adding in Rx Clay. It’s a safe, inert substance you just sprinkle on their food. It made all the difference as it gave just that extra help he needed. You can get it on Amazon. Your Rottweiler will need more of it than my Corgi does I’m sure smiley4but it’s another really good thing to have on hand.

Thanks for sharing Linda! We LOVE Rx Clay, that stuff is da bomb! Many people have shared they love it too.

We've written about it here:

Three Ways to Stop Runny Pet Poop

And believe it or not, our Wyatt Ray only needed 1 scoop a day to get things under control, and he was 80 pounds!

Just want to add onto the welcoming committee to you and Red.  No one wants to be here,  but as you can see, it's  the best place to be for support and information.

You've  gotten great input from Jerry  and Linda.  So yes, there are  options to  help eliminate  the side effects  of chemo.  Just  keep your Vet in the loop.  They can reduce  the chemo next visit  if it causes too many side effects.

Keep us posted, okay?

If I read this right, Red had his first chemo about three days ago, right?

Does Red show signs if a queasy  tummy and being  nauseous?  For example turns his head away from food, maybe licks his lips or even drools a littlr

Or does he act like he reallh does want to eat, eager to eat, but just can't  seem to follow through.

As Jerry and Linda indicated, ask your Vet about:

Two suggestions.  One would be an appetite  stimulant called

    Mirtazapine

Addtionally, you can also ask your Vet about to help combat nausea

      Cerinia

As you have already found out, this site is such a valuable  source of information.   You aren't  the only one who leaves the Onco's visit with very little follow up information.

For now,  skip his normal kibble and try some warm rotisserie chicken, maybe some bacon and eggs with chees..anything at all that he will eat..  Put it on another plate other than his normal food bowl.

Otherwise, Red seems fine, right??   Pink gums, fully engaged, no fever,  normal potty, etc.

So 'usually", if loss of appetite  is due to chemo, it only lasts a few days, However, the meds we listed help them get over the hump quicker.

So give your Onco a call and ask for the meds mentioned amd see of that helps.  Of course, of you jave any con, you can take Red in for an exam.

Keep us posted..

I'm thinking that he might be  little off but what you are describing sounds pretty good considering. Does he have any of the symptoms Sally described? He may have a bit of nausea so I would let your vet know. The meds can help him feel better faster.

Try to remember that if he is eating a little bit and drinking water those are
good signs overall. Just let your vet know so they can adjust his treatment accordingly.
