You are doing GREAT learning how to get around the site, 3-paws up!

Yes, Gaba can make dogs sleepy.  In the Gabapentin article, we reiterate Dr. Petty's advice, which will help Mac be less woozy (that, and traction on your floors will help tremendously).

  • Ask your vet to prescribed a “tapered UP” dose. Some animals will experience sleepiness when taking Gabapentin. To reduce the odds of this happening, ask your vet to prescribe a “tapered up” dose. This method will start with just one dose at bedtime. Once your dog or cat has gotten used to Gabapentin you can give another dose in daytime hours.

You're doing GREAT getting our our site, we know it's a lot to figure out. 3-paws up!

Yeah for Mac!  Maybe he's trying to catch up on his sleep.

I started a picture library on photobucket.com (you can log in with facebook) and share pictures through there.

Aw, cutie!!  Glad you figured out the photos.

So, he's doing better?

Lisa, Minneapolis

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly.  His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.

He did really well most of last night. He did wake up at 5am crying really loudly again, however it was only once so I'm counting that as a win for now. He's passed out right now watching movies with us and he had some beef jerky as a treat so he's living the life haha.

That's great news!  I would consider 5:00 am to be a good nights sleep.  (My crew expects breakfast at 4:30.). The first 10 days or so are really hard for everyone, but it sounds like you have got the pain meds figured out now.  Hopefully each day should see improvements until the staples come out and then you will be amazed at how Mac perks up!

Mac gets his stitches out tomorrow and does his first round of chemo. Anyone jave issues with the chemo? I hear most are ok, but if he does get an upset tummy how long does it usually last? A day? A few days? Just trying to be prepared.

Thank you all!

The Onco will give yiu Cerenia should Mac show signs of nausea. IF it happens, usually, but not always, it's arpund the five day mark or a bit before. Some dogs experience tiredness. Every dog is different, bjt the tiredness, if it happens, only kasts a few days. The nausea, loss of appetite can last a couple of days. Sometimes tne Cerenia clears it up within 24 hrs. So e Oncos actually give a dose of Cerenia at the chemo appointment.

And some dogs don't have any side effects. My Happy Hannah saie through her four rou ds of Carboplatin and has zero side effects. On rare occasions some dogs have more severe side effect and have to stop the chemo. They rebound quickly after it is out of their system. Knowing Happy Hannah coukd stop anhtime if she had issues was one of the motivations in giving it a try.

Tomorrow is gpi g to be a great day! Stitches out...YAY!! 🙂 And more pics pllllleasssssse!

Most dogs tolerate chemo very well! And yep, having that Cerenia on hand can be a life saver just in case. Good luck tomorrow! And congrats on taking the next step to get stitches out, you two are doing great.

The Cerenia is great.  They will also give you something for diarrhea.  Otis had one bout of explosive diarrhea (outside) after chemo 1.  For other three rounds, I gave the meds as soon as I saw squishy poo.   He had nausea (symptoms for him were excessive lip licking and drooling) on chemos 2 - 4.   Both meds worked almost immediately.  The oncologist put him on Pepcid AC after round 2 for gas and indigestion.  He never stopped eating, and I discovered that he was best with lots of small meals/snacks - basically not letting his stomach get totally empty.  He slept day of each chemo, and throughout, just didn't seem 100%.  Glad we are done, but nothing so problematic that I questioned whether to continue.  Every dog is different, and I know some have much more serious reactions.  For us, however, nothing horrible (although each chemo was a bit harder than the one before).  By chemo 4, we were giving Cerenia every 4 days or so, but once again, symptoms were the drooling and lip licking, not actual vomit.
