Can ya' feel the love????? Can ya' tell how we are all soooo invested (well worded Lisa!) in helping Mosby! We adore him and we certainly understand your bond!

I DO hope you make notes of ALL the possibilities everyone has mentioned and have a sit down with the Vet/Onco and go over every single idea! You pay them big vucks!! A lot of good suggestions/possibilities!!

Nothing is off the table with the Colonel. If they can find no medical condition causing this, then the meds and all the possible issues they may (or may not) be causing certainly needs to be considered. Or even a severe reaction to chemo...not likely, but throwing it out there. All this started the day after his first chemo. May, or may not, be some "first time ever" connection.

I actually didn't realize he was still on so many things (relatively speaking). I thought the "purge" during the time he was getting fluids pretty much had him on almost nothing. And that seemed to be when he was himself again.

And I know you'll get yiur answers before you proceed with chemo, or even delay it a couple of days if necessary (or not proceed). But I would certainly want him in as good shape as possible before continuing. And like yiu said, if you do proceed, load him up with fluids, etc. Good idea.

Sooooo......He doesn't have diarrhea anymore....he is a bit more comfortable....and he's still eating some. So he hasn't had a total backslide...still a vit of a step forward from a week or so ago.

Always sending love and hugs!

PS. Take your notes with you....get every question answered as best they can...write it down...or even video it for later reference.

I DO feel the love, you all are awesome. I have definitely made notes of all of the suggestions; I am an extremely aggressive (ugh, assertive, that's it) healthcare advocate, which comes half from growing up in a medical family and half being a corporate attorney who is used to pursuing answers to the nth degree.

All this started not after his first chemo, actually (he was only sleepy after that, and it didn't affect his appetite), but his second chemo, when he was on the cipro, and then after that he went on ALL sorts of anti-nausea drugs and anti-diarrhea drugs, none of which worked, so the detox was actually to go off those and only back to the ones he needed (pain meds for his back - going off those wasn't an option, and they have never bothered him) and the Cipro (not knowing it was affecting him he needed it for the staph). The 24 hours IV fluids helped, but he started going downhill again not long after, so I'm sure the fluids helped flush some toxins out, but being on the cipro they came right back. Then he finally got to go off the Cipro last Monday night. And then he got brighter, started eating again, and was happy. But we think he played too hard at daycare Thursday and pulled his back.

The acupuncture didn't really help this time, but we did alternate ice and warm packs over the weekend, and he seems to be getting better. His attitude is VERY bright and happy, even though he seems like he's struggling when he walks. He has been eating very well, and especially based on a number of the comments here, we have been trying to make sure he always has a little food in his belly, and that seems to be helping (or at least isn't hurting). And he is pretty happily eating it. We have come up with a method for his pills that is working well, but of course it does also help that I'm not giving him a bajillion pills each time. We have sent him to daycare this week, but with very strict instructions on what he can do, and he was no worse yesterday, plus very happy. The daycare folks pretty much provide him a place to lounge (I bring a bed each day) while everyone else is playing, and he can meet and greet some and also go outside for potty breaks, but no actual playing. He'll do that through Wednesday, and 3rd chemo is scheduled for Thursday if everything looks ok. Based on his improvement, I am inclined to go forward if his bloodwork, etc. is good. He was scheduled to get xrays done of his chest Thursday, but since he got xrays the other week, and no one saw anything visible, I'm not sure if they'll do it again. Hopefully, since he is off the Cipro, he'll do much better, more like he did after the first chemo. One of us will stay home with him Friday, and then he can chill all weekend too. The following Monday we finally have a follow-up with PT vet so he can get a complete check of his back and also legs, so we can make sure we are on the right track to managing his pain and help him feel better going forward. He gets out of breath easily when he walks, and I'm not sure if its physical or there's something else going on. Hopefully we'll find out more soon.

So that is the Mosby update. I am very superstitious, so I don't like saying things are going "well," because I'm afraid I will jinx it (seems to keep happening). So I can say that things are not going too bad. 🙂 The most important thing is his attitude and happiness. We are spoiling him with lots of back massages and (a reasonable amount of) treats, and generally reminding him that he's the best dog in the world.

EATING WELL!!! 🙂 🙂 YAAAAAAAAAY 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

A VERY PROACTIVE AND DEVOTED MOM!! 🙂 🙂 YAAAAAAAAAY 🙂 🙂 🙂

Thanks for taking time to give such a thorough overview. You've chronicled things very well. It will be very helpful if anyone else has issues with the same types of drug cocktail...especially the Cipro! Ugh! That, along with how easy itnis to "tweak" something. All very helpful. A loooooong road indeed!

Just thrilled to hear the Colonel is back on track:-) GRRRRRREAT NEWS:-)

This calls for PICTURES of MOSBY!!! YES!!! PICTURES!!! 🙂

Love and hugs!

OH wow you have got it under control! With that kind of background and approach, Mosby is definitely on the right path to many better days ahead. Good job! I'm super happy he's doing better. The daycare arrangement sounds much more ideal for a Tripawd like him.

Tripawds have to work a lot harder than quads to walk/hop.   I am not surprised that he gets breathless easily.   My Otis would stop at house 5 pretty much every walk, and we would sit there for awhile, smelling the air and looking around.   My vet said to imagine trying to get around your house, or to the end of your driveway, hopping on one foot.

I know you are being cautious after everything that has happened, but it really does sound like he has turned a corner, and you are going to get back to a normal Tripawd experience!

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Ok, just dropped Mosby off for blood work, kidney function check, and chest xrays -- after that, if everything looks ok, then he will get his third carbo treatment. He has been very bright and his appetite has been great (although he has decided that he likes being spoon fed and usually makes my husband do that ... eats with gusto, just prefers to eat off a spoon :/ ). We do still think that hind leg is getting weaker; not sure if it's related to his back, a pulled muscle in his leg, or maybe even the sarcoma on that leg. We will see how today goes. I am hopeful (1) that all of his labs and xrays look ok and (2) that he gets his treatment and (3) that it doesn't affect his appetite, etc., because he's not on the cipro anymore. But mainly I hope for number (1). I suppose I will get a call in the early afternoon to update me on whether they can proceed or not -- always hard to wait for that call. Regardless of how it goes, we have his workup with his PT vet Monday, and will hopefully find a better strategy for his back and figure out what's up with his leg. But it's one day at a time!

Ha! Yay for the spoon-feeding! 🙂 Manni loves it and any pill just simply disappears with that method! (I make sure to not tell my occasional guests that their coffee-spoon was in the dog's mouth prior to the dishwasher, prior to their coffee ... 🙂 )

We're holding all our fingers, paws, limbs and bodies crossed for options 1 through 3!!

You really deserve a break from all the 'didn't go wells' and get the upgrade to 'sailed right thru that one'!!

Yeah, ditto Tina! Time for Mosby to "sail right through" all this stuff today! 🙂 🙂

LOOOOOVE that he enjoys being spoon fed!!! PRICELESS!!! PICTURES!!! WE MUST HAVE VIDEO OR PICTURES! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 And it's actually beneficial ro him to eat slowly that way to keep his tummy from going all whacky!!!

And hey, eating off of a spoon a dog has eaten from is a true privilege in my world!!! 🙂 🙂

Keeping allmpaws crossed for a good day! The important thing is Mosby feels good!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Here's to one day at a time! I love that he's doing so well. I know Monday can't come soon enough for his PT visit, we can't wait to hear about it.

Report so far: Mosby's blood work and kidney function were great. They re-took x-rays (although there was some confusion, as he had xrays taken 2 weeks ago when he was so sick) and they do not see anything on them. The sarcoma on his left thigh is slightly bigger. He received his 3rd carbo treatment. They now want to wait 3 weeks to have an appointment to plan the surgery, the oncologist's concern being how sick he got after the 2nd treatment. I'm not 100% on board with that, just because I do think it was connected to the cipro, and his blood work and kidney function never declined after the 2nd treatment. But we will definitely see how he does after this treatment, and if we are back in the same boat even without the cipro, then I agree that waiting 3 weeks is good, and at that point we'd probably be thinking more about whether chemo is the best plan anyway.

He ate dinner (did insist on spoon feeding at least a bit, but ate heartily) and is sleeping now. After his 1st chemo treatment, he was very tired, sort of flu-like, so that's no surprising. Tomorrow is really going to be the big day in terms of seeing how he is handling the chemo. Fingers super crossed for the Moz-beast.

Great news!  Isn't it amazing how quickly he trained you to feed him with a spoon?  So much more civilized than kibble in a dish.  Soon you will realize that he can only eat off of your best china dishes.smiley
