Ok ... I promise I'm not trying to be an alarmist ... but is it normal for them to not drink for 24 hours or more after being on IV fluids? Do the fluids make them so hydrated that they really don't want any water at all?

Last time Astro got loaded up, he didn't drink at home for almost 30 hrs. I was a wreck, but he just wasn't feeling it. I eventually gave him some chicken broth just so he felt like he got a treat and I got some fluids in him.  I assume the Colonel is also pretty tired from his overnight spa trip at the vet.  Maybe he just needs a personal chef?

Snoozing. We had a nice walk around the property again today. Here's my blog post about yesterday's walk:

http://mosby.tr.....worshiper/

He's been drinking at little more, and is at least eating his i/d diet, but we've yet to interest him in any other canned food. We're going to try his old "junk food," beneful today. I've been giving him baby food as a snack, and he's eating probably most types of treats. He is very bright and cheerful and enjoying our little walks and of course his massages. 🙂

Just got him to eat a can of Purina so maybe we're good to go without the Science Diet. 🙂

Well, Mosby has started not eating again, and isn't drinking a ton. We have tried to get him outside, get him some exercise and fun, take him on car outings, keep him interested. He ate well through yesterday evening, when he started getting really picky. This morning he refused to eat at all. We had planned to get him into daycare today to start getting back to his routine (his daycare people love him and will keep things super chill, lots of rest plus visiting with quiet / chill dogs), and I'm crossing my fingers that will make a difference and he'll come home hungry! If things don't improve, his oncologist is back in town Thursday, so I guess we'll make an appointment with her. Since bloodwork and lung xray were both fine, maybe the next step is an ultrasound. I just don't know. He also had a bout of diarrhea this weekend, too, without any cause. He is still on the cipro, and I really want him to get off that. Since the regular vet cultured that one spot on his incision last week (even though it looked ok), we probably have to wait until that gets back, and then maybe we can take him off, if the results are ok.

Ohhh Mosby, I hope that Doggy daycare is just what the doctor ordered so you'll feel better. I know when I'm on Cipro it makes my belly feel icky too. Hopefully that's the cause and you can finish taking it. We have our fingers and paws crossed.

Cuture had a light growth of staph, but it could be surface. Apparently it's sensitive to more than just Cipro, so maybe we can switch him. However, sounds like he can come off the Cipro tonight. So that's good. And like you said, I hope daycare really turns things around. Mosby needs a break! He was so bright Thursday evening and Friday into Saturday, and then the decline started again. We tried to be super positive with him and treat him normally. My fingers and paws are crossed as well. This dog needs to be set on an even keel again and given a chance for a real recovery! I almost feel like deleting this thread for fear of scaring people away from amputation! I still think we made the right decision, I just wish the end result had been a lot more good days for him than it has been. We are working so hard to get him there.

Really think its the cipro. Quinolone antibiotics can be, to some degree, fairly toxic ( and therefore somewhat controversial.) Why was cipro specifically recommended? What may Mosby be switched to? Once the yucky antibiotics are gone, really think you will see a much happier Mosby! You got this Mosby!!!

The original culture (the yucky wound) came back with a staph that was only sensitive to cipro and some really expensive drug, so we went with the cipro. This new culture (which was on a spot of blood on his incision, and there's a chance it was just surface staph just because it's everywhere) came back sensitive to a lot more drugs. So it's possible that we could switch to something else if they decide to keep pursuing antibiotics. But for now the vet wants him to go a few days w/o antibiotic to see if his appetite comes back. He's never had a temp, obvious swelling, redness, etc. The first wound was clearly infected, but nothing has looked like that in a while, and it was a tiny spot even then.

So, hopefully once the cipro clears out he'll be feeling better. I didn't know that it has some toxicity issues.

In other news, he had his first daycare day today in nearly 2 months!! We have the best daycare, they basically created an experience for him that's half boarding / half daycare with quiet dogs. Lots of naps near everyone playing, plus interaction and lots of mental stimulation. He's wiped but ate most of a can of food for dinner. We are so lucky to have people like Stephanie and Stewart who love him so much and are willing to accommodate him. I think tomorrow will be a sitter day, to recuperate, and then we'll probably try daycare again Wednesday and Thursday. Friday I will be at home and he will have acupuncture. We were supposed to have it last week but had to cancel because he was sick. Which is a shame, because even just that one session made such a huge difference for his back.

Onward and upward!

Oh Mosby, you are quite the ROCK STAR! You have every human who knows you (and that includes us), wrapped around your paw!! Everyone just looooooves you!! 🙂

Although I know you get concerned when he's not eating like an eating machine, he clearly feels just fine and is having a great time having everyday be MOSBY DAY!! 🙂

It sounds like that Cipro may, indeed, be causing more harm than good! Glad the "infection" isn't anything awful so Mosby can be off the antibiotics for awhile.

Did the diarrhea he had this week end clear up? Is he still drinking some? Remeber, the water content in canned food is pretty high.

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned it, but GRAIN FEE FRESH PET (refrigerated) is some pretty good stuff that dogs looooove!! I know you don't want to keep switching foods so he won't get an upset tummy. I guarantee (almost) Mosby will love this!!!!!

I bet that boy is a very tired pup! He's had quite a busy few days!

Glad he's going to get his acupuncture again:-) 🙂

And goodness gracious, Mosby's posts are very important for ALL of us!! We learn so much from each individual journey! And it's important to share the ups and downs so everyone understands all the little ..er...hurdles that can pop up anytime.............and often do!!

Lots of hugs
