boy am i excited!!!  After I posted looking for Pat and Ruthie, she contacted me....I just emailed her my phone number and I'm hoping she will call me (she just lives one little town over...really close)....she has a blog here and I found her by accident....so there will be MORE temador info coming!!!!  She apparently has already done the five days so I'm so excited to get this info......It sounds like Ruthie is doing well after this course of treatment so that is SUCH good news.  Ruthie was a very sweet dog and the very first Tripawd I hugged!!!  Even BEFORE Magic!

When I worked at the vet clinic, we always took blood from the jugular in both cats and dogs... it's a much bigger vein and actually less painful for the animal. Also less chance of hemolysis, so much better for bloodwork...

But if for whatever reason we couldn't get the jugular (some dogs have weird anatomy) then we'd use the cephalic (front leg) or in an extremly aggressive dog... then the saphenous (back leg) vein, to stay far away from their sharp teeth! winker

I was a certified vet tech (part time) for many years, though my full time job has always been in 'human' neuro-oncology research.

I'm so happy to hear that Magic is doing well so far on the Temodar!!!big-blink

Glad you found Ruthie!  Gosh, we've following her blog and should have told you!  I guess I didn't realize you two were on the same treatment.  I think hers was through an IV.

Diane, have you tried my method of giving meds?   I use a plastic picnic knife.  I hold the ridged side and then put lots of peanut butter on the handle with the pill.  When they open their mouth, I scrape it behind their teeth.  The PB is then stuck to the roof of their mouth and it's hard to get the pill out without swallowing.  It's quick and clean.

Here's my little video – not the best but I did it by myself.

Diane that is GREAT to hear about Ruthie! We had no idea she lived so close to you! Please let us know if you two get in touch.

Meanwhile, we agree, the jugular is where we've seen blood draws done, always.

Comet and MB, this video is ADORABLE! Hey you're pretty tame there for getting such a tasty treat, even if there are pills disguised in it!

Ha!  Duke gets placebo's too.  I use cream cheese because Trouble is allergic to PB, but we do the same routine.

OMG...I just did a normal (very long) post and then hit post without the numbers...it went into the ozone.

ok:  Thank you so much for the video, I am going to try that definitely...will it work maybe with liverwurst??

Blood work wasn't bad...he had work on the 7th ...in parens... out of parens is the blood work from Friday...white blood count 10,100 (16,000), neutrophils 7,070 (14,700), red blood 46 (42)

He is not eating anything and a lot of that is suspicion of ME maybe....but he has no appetite, hopefully after today's last dose he will start to get a LITTLE hungry....I have tried a lot of stuff and nothing seems to pique his interest right now

Ruthie and her mom Pat and Magic and I will be getting together next week, which isn't as good as joining the NorCalifers, but darn close

Ruthie actually did this a week ago...or finished...and it was the five pills like Magic...but she has had a lot of the other chemos too...probably the same progression we did..different cancer...she has histiocytic sarcoma

No barf last night either...so my suggestion is ALWAYS give the anti-nausea drug before giving any damn chemo!!

Had to take OJ to emergency last night...in talking to the emergency vet, I discovered they have been putting the wrong instructions on one of his meds...good thing I didn't read them! (I have been giving him this med since he was 13 and he is now 17...they changed, someone made a mistake in March of 2009...but I put them in a different bottle when I bring them home so didn't notice)  I want an explanation and told the vet so.  Don't screw with something like that.  Magic's vet is now taking care of OJ (she did OJ's chemo too, along with another doc) and she asked if I wanted to do a feeding tube and I just can't do that to him.  I am going to have to get used to the fact he is getting to the end of his journey, and it is very difficult.  Magic is wondering what the hell I did with his cat....I should be picking him up this afternoon and we shall go from there.

Time to take Magic out and wear him out before feeding him his anti-nausea pill (what can he throw up if he isn't eating!!!!)....last chemo tonight.

let's try posting again (i am such a dweeb)

Poor  OJ.   I hope he gets better.

I had a bit of a tantrum once at the vet's office when I got the wrong milligram dosage in the bottle for Comet.  It was suppose to 75mgs and I got 25 mgs pills.  If it had been the opposite, it could have gone really bad.  The bad part is I need bifocals so I guess at anything I can't see upclose.  It was hard to see 25Mg vs. 75Mg on the pill so I was glad the pill was smaller or I would have never caught it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...you have to be your own advocate with yourself and your pets when it comes to doctoring.

Keep up the good work Diane!

So sorry to hear about OJ.  It is so difficult when our fur children become old, tired, and ill.  I know how you feel about the medicine instructions.  When the diagnosing vet sent Trouble home with Tramadol (to keep her comfortable for as long as possible), they gave me 100 mg tablets, but labeled the bottle 10mg.  After her surgery, I told the new vet I ddn't need tramadol, I had a full bottle.  His instructions were 100 mg twice a day.  I went home grabbed the bottle and knew something just wasn't right.  Started searching and found pictures of the 100mg tablet - exactly what I had.  I would certainly have killed her if I hadn't felt something wasn't right and done some research. The folks who prepare the medications are human, they can make mistakes.  We have to be the ones to watch for their blunders.

Sending good thoughts to the orange kitty.

Hi Diane;

I'm very sorry to hear about OJ's trip to the ER. You really do have your hands full with your fur-babies. You will definitely be an expert coming out of all this - the one we will all turn to for advice. I lost my 19 year old cat (Milly) in July - and have a 17 year old (Chester), and a 13 year old (Wolfie) still at home. Chester is getting to be a finicky old man - and tells me about it constantly. But I love them all very much.

Hang in there - I hope that Magic continues to do well with this latest chemo.

Sending Golden licks to OJ and Magic - and you ! from Sophie

and HUGS to you from me.

Hi Diane,

I am sorry your having such a time- it does seem to come in bunches sometimes.

For Magic- have you thought about syringe feeding him through the chemo??  I think you posted about doing that with OJ.  My pug Maggie is in the early stages of kidney failure (along with her cancers) so she gets some of each meal through a syringe.  What I have found lately with her is that she will refuse to eat solid food when first offered.  Once I get some food in her with the syringe she will sometimes eat the solid food.  You would need a pretty big syringe for him though- just a thought.

I can't help with pills- I have to stuff them down.

And don't give up on the Nor Cal crew- maybe you and Pat and Magic and Ruthie can all come together next time.  We will be meeting on Saturday June13th.

Good luck with OJ- I know you will do what is best for him.

Just an FYI, I checked at work today (I'm a Pharmacist at Walmart) and 5 temodar 140mg capsules would cost $1,447. It would probably not be in stock, but to order it is no big deal.  Don't know if that's less than other places, but it's an option.

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end.  On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.

Hi Diane,

Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers with OJ.  Sorry to hear that Magic's not eating either.  I remember after Mackenzie's surgery she lost her appetite for days. So I tried everything - the only thing she ended up munching on were her bisquit treats and these New Balance sausage rolls (they come in different flavors like turkey, lamb, beef, etc.) Go figure.   It's so tough when your babies don't want to eat!

We'll be keeping our paws, fingers and toes crossed that there will be a light at the end of this tunnel!

Sending you, OJ and Magic lots of golden hugs.

Kami (Mackenzie's Mom)

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

wow...I haven't been on today cuz I didn't get any notifications and well, between OJ, taking Magic to the park, trying to entice him to eat, vacuuming, getting garb. cans out....FINALLY, a little ME time!!!

Thank you for all your good wishes for OJ as well as Magic...and thanks so much for the heads up on Walmart...that is about the price the Apothocary Shop gave me ($1460)...I would assume all Walmarts have pharmacies?  Not just the Super Walmart? I ask because there was a big flap about putting in a super walmart and it failed...and I have only been there a couple of times (it isn't a good place for me to go....anymore than Cosco is....I come home with things I REALLY REALLY NEED TO HAVE...yep sure)

Got OJ home last night and we are stopping the one appetite pill (the bad directions one), his doc gave him one that is given every three days but really thinks it may be just as good to bump his prednisolone up to every day rather than every other.  He was much more alert and "brighter" when he came home and ate during the night (our little   saucer with food in it...dumb thing I started with the only kidney food he will eat...I can now feed the cat in my sleep...haven't figured out how to stop from getting all those little kernals in the bed however)  He ate some wet this morning.

OK.  we are 24 hours out from the last chemo dose.  OMG...have you all read those jokes about pilling a CAT?  well you should have seen ole Diane trying to get that LAST pill, that LAST EXPENSIVE POISON PILL down Magic....I tried everything (now remember I wasn't going to do the peanut butter thing with that...probably a good thing...more about that soon) that pill was all over the patio and I didn't want him to CRUNCH it...I don't know if that would be a problem, but it seems like it would be.  I practically had my fist down his throat (no wonder he was gagging)...but finally with a scoop of cat food and the pill and my five fingers it went down.  And I am not exaggerating this process at all...that pill was in and out of his mouth more often than his tongue.  Surprisingly, no barf.

I decided to do no supplements today.  Other than the dasuquin...and the prilosec in the morning.  So I try the knife (spoon actually) with the peanut butter....oh yeah it went behind his teeth fine, lick lick lick chomp chomp chomp, lick...spit....all the peanut butter gone, pill spit out on ground.  HE IS SMARTER THAN ME.  I am ready to try the cat's pill popper but I'm afraid he will chomp it in half.

I actually thought about syringe feeding him if this doesn't come around in a day or so.  I got baby food (crap, I had just given away all the baby food I bought after the surgery...gave it to the day care across the street) to use and also got (oh you guys are going to think I am nuts) three big hunks of tri-tip.  So I get the groceries in and before unpacking anything or even taking off my sunglasses, I'm ripping open a corner of the package and waving it around him...and he is interested!!  I had put a can of cat food with some evo kibble in his bowl so I cut some hunks of this and threw it in and he WOLFED it!!!!!  I didn't want to feed the whole package at one time because I learned my lesson back on Tuesday (and I'm having company....not a nice thing for her to step in on the way to the potty)....if this stays down, he will get some in a couple of hours.  I guess the day care may get more baby food.  Now I don't intend to feed him tri tip every day...well, I DON'T.  (unless it becomes necessary) (notice I saiid "intend")

I would love to come to the next no. Calif gathering...but we'll see....my truck really does need to be looked at, but I CANNOT be without it at this time.  And like I said, directionally challenged...couldn't even find a dog park in Sebastopol today that I had a map to (I was born and raised in Santa Rosa.....)

And is it permissable to haul off and whack someone else's child??  Magic has always drawn kids (big white fluffy dog...probably looks stuffed) and for some reason he has always been really good about them hugging him and petting him ... I was apprehensive the first time the little-as-a-minute girl next door ran up and threw her arms around him but he is just really patient and stands there.  Well as you all know the three legged dog brings lots of attention so we were at a park and four or five little kids came up asking questions (when will he get his leg was one of them...that was a new one) and the little girls were fine but then out of the corner of my eye I catch this little boy KICKING Magic's hind legs....luckily this brat wasn't close enough to do any damage, he was brushing the fur with his bare feet...and his mother, caretaker, probation officer, whatever, said like she thought it was cute, "oh he's feeling his fur" and I say through gritted teeth "we feel with our HANDS NOT OUR FEET"  .... serial killer in the making!!

Tana, I am so sorry about your Milly...when they are with us for so long (your Chester is the same age as OJ, fondly known as grumpus) it is like losing a body part.  OJ is the last of the three cats we had at one time, all of them lived to be 16-18.  At the vet last night picking up OJ, there was this darling all white kitten one of the receptionists was adopting and I held it...I deliberately did NOT want to see the female that looked like the male or the black and white male that were this little guy's littermates.  OMG was it a cutie and my mind is going..hey, there are two more...I need a keeper!!!!   I thought about other animals and thought, gee maybe that would give Magic an all day long thing to keep him going and for OJ....well, let's see...um....probably not huh.  I finally decided the same thing I have been thinking all along...it just would not be fair to them at this stage.  And what in the world would I do with a HEALTHY animal????

So now everyone's eyes shall get a rest from the nightly novellas!!  THe plan at this point is xrays in three weeks...I am not sure where to count from and it doesn't matter tonight.  Ruthie's xrays are this Thursday so on Pat and Ruthie's behalf...prayers and crossed paws for a really really good outcome.  We will hopefully have gotten together before then.

Oh, and I have stopped the meloxicam.  The mysterious black stuff (the BS) we are now 99% convinced, all of us, it is vomit.  Last year when it appeared, it was probably a time I had given a rimadyl (I had some that I used very occasionally...I usually used coated aspirin and now I think that was BETTER).  It had just been black smooth stuff.  I had stopped giving it for a few days then gave him one after a really long romp and when I went out to lock a gate, I saw something, went and got a flashlight and found that the smooth stuff now had the coffee grounds appearance so there will be no more meloxicam whatsoever.  If he has a long romp and appears to be stiff and sore, I will use the gabapentin if anything is necessary and his vet concurs.  I know there is an angel exchange thing here...but since a lot of you are reading this, I shall be lazy.  I have 17 left, they are chews that are 4.4 mg.  I don't know what CMPD means but that is on the label.  It says 30 Meloxicam  4.4 mg CHEW CMPD.  Since it is a prescription, I probably should have that before sending this off.  Let me know if this would be helpful to someone.  I don't care about the prescription, but legally I'm not sure about how it works.

At last someone who understands how when I start writing the words just keep coming and the paragraphs just get longer and longer.  I'm so glad we can come here!

I switched from peanut butter to cream cheese for pills when we discovered the peanut butter was keeping the allergies active.  I actually like the consistancy a little better for pill giving.   With peanut butter, Trouble would sometimes do what Magic did, lick, lick, lick, and spit the pill out.  I've not had that happen since beginning the cream cheese.

Sounds like both fur children are doing better this evening.  Excellent!
