Thanks for everyone weighing in and no, cleaning up barf late at night and trying to use the spot cleaner at the same time (and thinking, boy I'm glad I didn't have Coit in to do carpets!!!!)

Oh Jakesmom thank you SO SO SO much for these instructions….tonight I shall give the cerenia a half hour before the temodar unless i hear differently from the doc.  I called this morning to see if there was anything I could use as an ADDITIONAL nausea remedy and I'm waiting right now.  I think it was my fault for giving him that kibble (Cherry's dad for one I know absolutely knows how exciting it is to FINALLY get something resembling an appetite!)….Unfortunately most of that is now in the garbage having been recycled into mud.  Those two incidents were the only ones we had (thank you God) and this morning I gave him his K9 immunity and Prilosec in lunch meat and the little tray of chicken livers …. this is his normal morning stuff…when I think of what I feed him with the supplements, maybe he is getting plenty of food….now that I think it over!!!

Oh and Jakesmom also asked for the dosage and Magic's BSA and the protocol.  They didn't specifically do blood work RIGHT before the dosage, but he did have blood work on Friday…so 3 days prior….close enough I guess.  And we will be doing blood work on Friday prior to the 4th dose, so that fits in to the doing it during.

I don't know about his body surface area….what does that refer to?  I shall ask the vet who will probably know.

We are doing 5 doses (1 per day) of   140 mg then we wait three weeks and xray again.

If we have shrinking or disappearing progress we will do it again (thanks for the possible pharmacy also; Rene also gave me a source and I shall be checking both of them).

I don't know if I mentioned that the nurse was hesitant to use anything other than Dollar Drug (at least that was sure the feeling she gave me) and said they KNEW that Dollar would do it to their specifications.  So we'll see.  And apparently some pharmacies or compounding places will do some things and not all things.

In the realm of it never rains but it pours, OJ had his doc appt yesterday and we are losing a little ground on the weight but not much then this morning while I'm scooping the box, he is jumping in and out and piddling little bits, then wants to squat on MY BATHMAT in the other bathroom from his box but RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME, then UP ON THE BED TO SQUAT …. so there is an emergency call into them…naturally the blood work and all was done yesterday so my take is no, no more tests, give me antibiotics because my diagnosis is bladder infection…so let's just start treating that!!(I just can't locate the medical degree, I must have misplaced it….but since he has kidney failure and these were the same signs a female kitty I had that had recurring bladder issues….I figure I'm pretty safe with that guess)   So paws crossed for OJ would be appreciated….boy, take your eyes off one patient to deal with another and the first one goes sideways!!!

Diane .... HUGS  .... whatever ... we have all of our kitty paws and Golden paws and human fingers and toes crossed for you, OJ and Magic. It never rains...

You most certainly must be feeling like a vet ! Sleep when you can - catnaps are a very good idea ! And don't forget to feed yourself.

It sucks feeling like you're the only caregiver ... in a house full of needy souls... but nourish your soul, too, and cherish the time together.

Wish there was something I could do to help you out.

Hi Diane,

Just when you think that Magic's gaining back his appetite, this happens.  Life is so unpredictable, isn't it? Well, once again, it sounds like you have everything under control and seem to be the consummate multi-tasker extradonaire with 2 pets you're taking care of. Sounds like you could become a vet laugh.  You are really amazing.  We are there for you and hope everything calms down a bit so you can get some rest and relaxation.

Thinking of you and hope that today goes better with everything for Magic and OJ.

Jakesmom you  have provided the protocol for tonight!!  I just fed him which is kinda funny...the vet at midnight suggested why don't i do the soup/rice thing so I though ok, I'll mix that with some kibble and see if he holds that down....he was so NOT interested in that....I eventually got him to eat SOME kibble and some of one of the rolls of that Fresh Pet Select and I hand fed most of it...but I also didn't let him romp a whole lot today, a much quieter walk in the park with the little dogs (Hey, the dog in love with his leg in the pic...Shiloh?  apparently got off leash...this is from another owner...and is GONE....don't get it cuz he was off leash most of the time and didn't run away) so maybe his tummy is sore from barfing and his appetite not soaring.   The vet said the cerenia actually could be given in the morning that it takes a whille to take effect and that it apparently has a long life??  So I have given that now (about  1:15) and will give the Temador at about 4:30.  AND NO FOOD!!

And OJ has some type of infection...they actually had run a urinalysis so he is doing a course of antibiotics and hopefully piddling all over outside and not on the bed...

here are the stats you asked about Marguerite.....weight 95 lbs, 140 mg Temador tablets, 5 pills (I know I said some of this already), 5 days in a row, xrays in 3 weeks to see if we have progress in reduction.  His M2 (I have no idea if this goes in front or back cuz I don't know what it means lol!!!!) is  1.23.

Okay!  Day/night two report:  THANK YOU MARGUERITE!!!!!!  Giving the cerenia at 1:00 PMish and the Temodar at 4:30 and not feeding anything past 1:00 PM seems to have worked!!!  NO BARF....seems to have been a good night....seems bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning and just finished gulping lunch meat, liver and supplements cleverly hidden.  No more piddle on the bed from OJ, antibiotics starting to work and I am truly a happy camper for the moment!!!!

So at least for us, and it should have been obvious since they gave him a nausea shot before the IV chemo, giving the cerenia a few hours before the chemo seems to have been the key .... oh, and NOT FEEDING HIM ANYTHING YOU DON"T WANT TO CLEAN UP!

The interesting question for me is that with both carboplatin and doxorubicin, they gave him a shot, gave him the chemo and I generally picked him up in the afternoon so the chemo was done in the afternoon and I fed him at his regular 5-6ish time and had no barf.  So I don't know if it was just the fact that this is apparently more difficult to digest? the cerenia needed to be given BEFORE (DUH diane)?  But if this works, I shall NOT screw with it!!

Will be trying the same procedure tonight and tomorrow at 10:30 he will be going in for blood work so we shall see how  bad a hit the white cells take.

I don't know if I mentioned also that I have cut out the meloxicam to see if I can get all sight of black out of the poop.  The 48 hr freeze out I did between Rimadyl and Meloxicam is when I think I saw the normal color coming back so I am not going to use it unless he appears to be in pain....that's pretty much the way I use it for ME.

AND THANK YOU RENE (I haven't checked out the other pharmacy yet) but I called The Apothecary Shop and discovered a couple of things that are weird....I can get this drug (if we are successful and go to another treatment) for a couple of hundred dollars cheaper there and it is NOT a compounded drug anyone has to put together at least for his case.  It comes in 140 mg. capsules and 5 to a bottle...so I don't know if ANY drug store can just order them....I am puzzled and intend to find out what this all means.  But a couple of hundred would so be a help.

okay okay...one treatment was BE SITTING DOWN...$1650.00.  That is five pills of 140 mg each.  The cost apparently goes by the size of the dog but it doesn't go down much....so a couple of hundred bucks ... hey I'll take it!!

Diane,

We've had a busy afternoon meeting with the good folks at the Vet Cancer Care center in Santa Fe, so we're just now getting caught up.

First off, you are doing GREAT. It sounds like a lot of trial and error and you are definitely getting there as far as making it work. Congratulations to you Ma! And thank you for sharing all of the details, you are definitely helping others by giving them a glimpse of how things are moving along.

Ok about the price of the Temador. Well, would you believe that today we learned there is another bone cancer drug that costs $1,000 for a single dose? Seriously! Don't know if that helps you feel any better about what Magic's is costing but I thought I'd throw it out there. Look for a story on this treatment soon.

Glad to hear that the Apothecary Shop might be a good resource for you.

I'm wondering if the Temador caused nausea faster than IV chemo because it goes directly into the stomach as opposed to the bloodstream? I'm not a doc, obviously. Maybe Marguerite can answer this?

And YEAY for OJ! Super Kitty kicks butt again!!!!

is that $1000 a pill?!?!  I was going to divide the 5 into the 1650, but really didn't want to!!!  See, I knew it could be worse....

I think the reason for the nausea is probably that he got a cerenia shot prior to the IV chemo and the first night I just went ahead with the chemo (they thought it would be fine, I had my doubts) and I don't know what would have happened had I not let him gulp the kibble.  We MIGHT have been okay if I had given the cerenia like I did yesterday and again today.  It truly is hard to know.

He definitely was not very hungry, and mainly ate the lunchmeat surrounding the rest of his supplements prior to dinner.  He did eat the other supplements this morning and a bunch of chunks of liver, so he got some food.  I fed him "dinner" again after the park and a bit prior to cerenia.

It was actually a little bit of a persuasion thing trying to get tonight's chemo down....I had used the turkey lunch meat and done some bacon to tuck inside (figured that would smell tempting) and I really had to "TALK" him into it...and I mean that's what I did..."oh what a good dog you...oh, Magic, come on...oh good boy, oh come on..." til I finally GUILTED him into eating it.  I think the damn plastic gloves thing freaks him out and I'm hoping Marguerite can tell me if it is okay to take the things off prior to feeding him and just washing my hands....I think it  MIGHT make him suspicious (gee...all of a sudden Mom has funny things on her hands as she is trying to convince me to eat this whatever it is)  I'm sure it is a precaution similar to not blowdrying your hair in the shower or chewing on snail bait or something.

I thought about doing the chemo later but I'm afraid if he then throws up and I DON'T HEAR it, that could be a pretty ugly mess come morning...

I think you my be right about the gloves.  They are very perceptive, and I'm sure that is a difference he notices. Sounds like he had a pretty good day.  I was really happy to see his update.

Hi Diane:

I haven't been on the boards for awhile, but tonight is the night.  I like the reference to the "Hail Mary".  I felt like we did that a lot last year with our Tika.  Whether it helped or not I don't know, but I have been looking through my notes/blog and she was going strong up until the last week or so before it 'was time.'

Yeah, we took a financial hit. But, the whole time you have to think, what if this WORKS?  It is not only something that can help dogs, but it can help humans.  It would be 'Magic' if, simply in just trying, you found a cure for a type of cancer.

I wish the best for you, lately, I read a lot, but don't post, too lazy to do it over my cell phone.  To everybody out there that's new to the group, best of luck, have fun, there's no right or wrong answers.

However, keep the word out there that our canine friends suffer from this horrible cancer also. I think people take them for granted, but trust me, it's not really any easier if it's your beloved pet or your beloved family/friend.

Take care all!

Yes, do tell and also start a new thread to tell us how Caya is doing?!? Did you end up start a competing website for ARF dogs? This is kind of like a tripawd coming back to life with you popping up after all this time.  Wouldn't that just be . . . Magic!

I knew Magic could do some good.  Even if no results get sent anywhere, we have apparently drawn another family member out of the woodwork!!  Your Tika's face looks very much like my Wolf that I had some years ago....even a little bit like Echo...so I feel like we ARE family!!  And OMG, that is exactly it...you put it right on the nose.  "what if this is the one that works"  Even tho I know we aren't getting a cure, even tho I know it isn't going to be a huge amount of time, boy I'm willing to give it a try.  And the news from Jim and Rene that they are trying this drug for bone cancer....maybe down the road the Temador will be an option that will knock the nasty on its ass!

I keep scrolling back up to look at Tika's face...I cannot believe how she looks like our Wolf.  Golly now I'M curious about your new family member.

Ok, here is the third dose update on the (wouldn't it be wonderful) Magic Bullet.  Yesterday, fed Magic about noon, not much of an appetite at all but he really hadn't done a huge amount of exercise yesterday, just a little.  Gave the cerenia at 1:00 ish, the chemo at 4:30 and we had no barf (thank you God).  Didn't notice anything out of the ordinary (ordinary??? what on earth is ordinary about this whole process)

This morning we went in for his blood draw and the head nurse (who isn't usually the one who does the draws) said "I just can't believe how WELL he is doing" which is what everyone says so it isn't just my rose colored glasses, at least right now!!  We then went to TWO parks and at the last one he played with little Pepper and a huge pit who was a ball chaser (puppy about 2).  Very nice dog incidentally and Magic was kind enough to share his water and cup with everyone (of course I had to keep running to the water faucet to refill the bottle).

When we got home I noticed when he pooped we now have brown puddles instead of the black/yellow messes...but because of the exercise today, I did give him a meloxicam but he did NOT want to eat it and I had to do the stuff the pill down the throat.  Had a little trouble this morning with the supplements/liver/lunch meat things which are usually a snap.  Also had to slide the cerenia down wrapped in some liver cuz he didn't want to eat it.  Was totally uninterested in anything I tried to feed him and since I don't feed him ANYTHING after about 2, I am kinda concerned.  His weight has dropped again, we are now at 94.4.  I tried MANY different things and have settled on trying to get down a can (almost a whole can...cat ate some...well I syringed some into cat) of the A/D canine/feline food that is really high calorie.  I just HATE giving him that chemo on an empty stomach with nothing.  Usually after playing like that, he is hungry so I have to assume that the chemo is definitely affecting his appetite.  He is now laid out asleep.  After all these years of telling him to stop licking his legs, guess how I am feeding this food (only way to get it down).....I am dropping it by spoonfuls on his leg and foot for him to lick off.  I may have been too optimistic about the whole can of food!

I don't KNOW that it is bad to give him the chemo on an empty stomach, but it just seems like it wouldn't be good.  I'll post when I know his blood results.  I assume if the white cells have dropped they may want to do antibiotics again, but I ASSUME we would finish the course of the drug (we have two left, tonight and tomorrow).

Magic has always been a panter even when it didn't seem to be hot and I have to keep reminding myself of that, but I do notice that it seems like maybe he breathes heavier  crying when he is at rest like now.

I do have a question for anyone out there...the nurse who did the blood today is the head nurse and she takes it out of the jugular (I believe that is what she said) and said that is the protocol for chemo patients....the nurse who has been drawing blood has been taking it out of the leg....does anyone know the reason for this?  Does it make a difference in the results??

Tika is indeed a beautiful princess. She was one of our 'November Five" and I miss her dearly, but was really happy to see Kim here!  Hi Kim!

When Trouble was taking chemo they did her blood draws in the jugular.  My understanding, was after a couple rounds of chemo, her veins were not usable anymore. She had five sessions and used up the only front and one back leg.

Diane, Trouble pants terribly once the weather starts getting warm.  Last summer I was sure she had lung issues, but when fall came she was just fine. The heat is just hard on them, try not to worry too much about the panting unless the vet becomes concerned.

Magic, we're sending love and good thoughts.  Trouble is speaking to me - I must go see what the queen wants.
