Lung Mets from Synovial Cell Sarcoma

Hi everyone,

Earlier this week, we took Sully to his first post-amp re-check. His front front leg was amputated on 12/15/21 due to synovial cell sarcoma in his shoulder.

Sully’s surgeon was initially impressed with how well Sully was doing! He almost didn’t want to do chest X-rays, but I pushed for it, just for my peace of mind. Or so I thought.
When the vet returned to the exam room with Sully, I was shattered to hear he had found lung mets on the X-rays. We were NOT expecting this, at least not so soon after his amputation! Especially not after the biopsy came back with a low-to-intermediate grade synovial cell sarcoma, and chemo was not recommended. We are devastated, to say the least. Sully is still asymptomatic, though I admit I’m not questioning if his panting after activity is more than it should be? My husband swears he’s always been like this. He is probably right, but I don’t trust anything anymore.

Anyway, we have been referred to the BluePearl Veterinary Hospital in Langhorne, PA (formerly CARES), to see one of their oncologists on 2/15. We are raising some $$ via GoFundMe, as we’re hoping to try chemo and/or radiation, and we’re still paying off the CareCredit card we used to help with Sully’s amputation in December.

Does anyone have any experience with Synovial Cell Sarcoma mets? Did you have any luck treating them? Is it any different from osteosarcoma mets and treatment? What worked for you?

We’ll see what the oncologist says on Tuesday, but after some research we’re hoping to maybe ask about SRT radiation combined with metronomic chemo? But this is a shot in the dark based on my limited knowledge and panicky research.

Meanwhile, Sully continues to do great! We are trying to pull ourselves together and prep for his appointment while just enjoying every day we have with him now.

Thank you all for any help!

Oh I'm so glad you posted here! Thanks.

So first, yes, you said it, Sully is doing great! That's awesome! No lab report can bum that pup out. He just want to make every day the best it can be. Follow his lead as best you can. It sounds to me like you already are, because you are really seeing the signs that he's recovered and bouncing back. Pawesome!

I looked through a gazillion results for "synovial cell sarcoma" in the Forums. Here are some results that may give you some insight (keep in mind that they are just snippets of their dog's experience, you may need to dig deeper in their Forums profile to find more info):

Don't forget to check out our Questions to Ask Your Oncologist so you have those ready for your visit.

And yes, we do tend to over analyze things after a cancer diagnosis. Sully probably has always had those little behaviors that make you jumpy now that cancer is involved. The x-rays would show is mets are bad enough to impact his breathing (they have to be pretty large or really taking over lung space before that happens).
