Hi everyone,

Glad to have found you all, such a supportive community for furparents who have put together a rich source of support and information to help others who fell in similar situation.

Well or story, had just began us buying our first house as a young couple suitable to own a dog so we could quickly get a canine sibling for our 5 year old cat Helix.

And Kaizer came to our lives 4 months after we moved to our new home ( although we planned to wait a year to save a bit and travel a bit before we became furparents) but excitment got the better of us 🙂 NO REGRETS!!!

Kazer is our 17 months dalmatian PERFECT puppy; we kid you not he never chewed anything except his toys, we retained our lovely garden ( we were ready to give up for few years till he was older) but this humble being just talked to us and understood us so as he was just another intelectual being totaly understood how we lived and how he could enjoy all activities we introduced to him and loved to smell the roses!

Our cuddle monster got diagnoses with Osteosarcoma 4 days ago and we got his chest and bloods done right away on decided to go for the amputation as there is no other sign of metastasis yet. [our hearts are still how we made that decision is awhole another topic we might start once we ready. We are not over the shock yet to be honest]

His recovery so far has been exceptional, day 1 pooped ( with bit difficulty) we found 1-2 drops of blood towards the end - if anyone can tell us if this is normal or not we would like to know. Although we found in his 2 stool bit of pointy grass/twigs bits which we think were causing him irritation as he was licking his butt the first night a lot. After 2 stool and 3 stool he is not doing that any more although there was still one drop of blood right at the end. Other wise hes all good. Eating but only his fav foods ( been doing heaps of home cooking) and drinking well.

Questions-

1. We want to know diet options for him for optimum recovery(costs dont matter) low in puriens(dalmatians breed requirment) and apparently should be low in CARBS as well? Our bit of online reading is suggesting cancer cells love carbs. Any input on this would be great!

We ben feeding him boiled chicken and veggies, mixing slowly kibble and wet food.( tumeric and coconut oil as suppliments once a day)

2. To make sure his post surgery leg strength rehab goes well, any MASSAGE tips, DIET suppliments, EXERCISES before his stiches are out and before his painkillers are weaned off...we want be give him the best start. All tips are welcome.

3. Now CHEMO is a big thing for us - Kaizer hates needles and is boisterous only when he is put in a no-no situation so will require to be tranqualized everytime, the frequency of vet visits will cause him more harm than good on a morale front - we are highly CONFUSED here, we would love to hear your experiances with both chemo and not chemo choices.

( Any info on Chemo protocol would be appriciated, we have a cat in the house and dogs will be always in our home)

We are happy to share our experiences and findings with you!

Will keep posting his recovery here as well.

Much love from down under!

Your good ol mate- Kaizer

Hi, I'm so sorry you are going thru this. Brownie was also diagnosed with OST and had front leg amputation. Next week will be one year.

Brownie eats "feed the dog starve the cancer" and lives it. We had to cut back to senior issues. He has also taken a mushroom powder to keep his immune system strong. My understanding is this is important with or without chemo. We use K9 immunity . You can find it on the nutrition blog. You want to stay away fro sugar and do low carbs. Cancer feeds off a sugar and carbs.

As far as chemo others will chime in, and I decided no to chemo because Brownie hates the vet with a passion, and did not want to stress him out.

There is a great book "the dog  ancer survival guide" that has a lot of good information and recipes.

You found the right site for information and support.

Wishing nothing but the best for Kazar and family.....

My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019.  With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer.  I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud!  He will live forever in my Heart!

I forgot, Brownie saw an oncologist and a Hollostic vet. I would suggest doing the same and then making a decision regarding treatment. We went with the Hollostic treatments.

Hi kaizer, mom amd dad,

Im so glad your family found us. Kaizer sounds like an exceptional pup and im glad to hear recovery is going well for you. Yahhhh, for eating drinking and pooping! Those are all huge wins!

As for where to go from here,  your off to a great start. As nancy said above dr damien dressler is a great resource for diet tips, recipes and general knowledge. His book is The dogs cancer survival guide. He also discuses supliments. We used k9 immunity.

Do you have a rehabilitation specialist in your area. We've seen lots of tripawds have great success with therapy. Being on 3 can create a different range of motion so pulls and pinches can be a thing. Gently massaging the neck and back before and after exercise are helpful.

Chemo is totally up to you. If the vet isnt Kaiser's thing then i can definatly understand your hesitation. We've seen tripawds who have done well with chemo and tripawds that have done well with a holistic approach. We choose not to do it with Roane it just wasn't right for her for alot of reasons. No judgement and no wrong decisions.

Keep us pupdated, we would love to hear more about your boy and how hes doing.

My sweet soulmate Roane was diagnosed with osteo in June of 2019. Had a rear leg amp on July 2nd & crossed the rainbow bridge to be with her sister Gypsy on the first day of Autumn Sept 23 2019.

Hey there! Hope you don't mind I moved your post but since your questions are specific to recovery, this is a good place so that other people can be helped too. Here are some ideas I have for you and Kaizer:

1. We want to know diet options for him for optimum recovery(costs dont matter) low in puriens(dalmatians breed requirment) and apparently should be low in CARBS as well? Our bit of online reading is suggesting cancer cells love carbs. Any input on this would be great!

Great timing! See today's Tripawds Nutrition blog post,

Five Dog Cancer Diet Ideas Anyone Can Do

2. To make sure his post surgery leg strength rehab goes well, any MASSAGE tips, DIET suppliments, EXERCISES before his stiches are out and before his painkillers are weaned off…we want be give him the best start. All tips are welcome.

Have you seen our e-books library or our book Loving Life On Three Legs ? Or the Tripawds Gear blog ? We have tonnnns of tips there for all of these topics. Our best bet as far as exercises is to locate a physio therapy expert right now, so that you can get him started when he's ready. Most therapists want to see a new Tripawd within one to two weeks after surgery. The best part is that if you take him to a CCRT or CCRP practitioner, the Tripawds Foundation may pay for your first rehab visit !

3. Now CHEMO is a big thing for us – Kaizer hates needles and is boisterous only when he is put in a no-no situation so will require to be tranqualized everytime, the frequency of vet visits will cause him more harm than good on a morale front – we are highly CONFUSED here, we would love to hear your experiances with both chemo and not chemo choices.

There are no "right" or "wrong" choices when it comes to chemo. Do what is right for Kaizer, and you've given him the best medicine there is. Here is a Forum post that shares thoughts by some members:

P.S. When you have a lot of questions all at once, and they're all on different subjects related to being an amputee, it's best to ask them in forums specific to their topic so that you'll get more feedback.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I have been going through all the recommended reads. Been very insightful.

Good news first Kaizer's recovery is going amazing he's being himself already !

The biopsy report came today and it's confirmed OST. Our vet is talking to the oncologist and will discuss the results in detail and get back to us for a chat for his treatment options. We been going through all the forums here to educate ourselves to ask about all options. They been so helpful.

Will keep you guys posted !

We sharing his story on Instagram, everyone is welcome to follow : @kaizer.helix

Hey Kaizer! Following you on insta. Get well soon.

We decided against Chemo for Bärli because of similar reasons as Brownie. Bärli is 9 so not old but also not young. He hates the vet and is extremely stressed and anxious. Plus after being in pain and lame for 3 months and another month of amputation and recovery it is enough now with being in pain and stressful vet visits all the time. I feel exhausted and I think Bärli does too. I really tried to get all infos to decide thinking of what I think is the best thing to do for Bärli and us because it is just not easy.

Our physio support is great and they also help us with the hollistic approach.

Best wishes and love!
