Jersey Girl is getting stronger and walking more

Mama Bear's been under the weather so my apology for no updates over the past few days.  Jersey Girl is clearly getting stronger so we're starting to feel better about her progress.  She's getting up and moving around the living room during the day and she's even tried to get on the couch a couple of times.   That nearly gave me a heart attack.  We have a big leather sectional and were pretty impressed when she got up and walked by herself from one end of it to the other so she could cuddle with Papa Bear.  So cute.  She also walked into the bedroom one day to visit me while I was sick in bed.  That touched my heart.  She sized up the bed like she was figuring out how to get on it. Luckily Gregg was right behind her and helped her up so we could cuddle a bit.  She even rolled onto her back for a belly rub.  That's huge because up until then she was barely ever even laying on her side and she'd simply been refusing to roll onto her back.

She FINALLY popped on day 7.  It was even the size of a 7 day poop we were so relieved she got all that out of her. Lol.   Holding the poop position for so long must have wiped her out because she had to lay down for awhile after that.  We don't care, we'll take it.  She's also figured out how to squat and pee so she's no longer falling into her pee.  Yay!

Food and water consumption is improving too.  She still needs home cooked food mixed in with her wet dog food and I've found she's more willing to eat the wet stuff if I warm it up in the microwave.  I wonder if she'll ever go back to kibble.  Lol.  Honestly, I don't care if she doesn't as long as we can keep her properly nourished.

I just can't believe how quickly some other dogs have bounced back from this surgery!  Shelby has done remarkably well and so has Eva!!!  I've been amazed.  My baby has been really weak in comparison but I think she's finally starting to come back.  Last night she even came up the stairs (only 2) from the yard on her own.  She was lying on the lawn when I stepped inside the house to get a tissue.  When I turned around to go outside again, there she was standing in front of me INSIDE the house.   Whaaaat?!  I was very impressed.  Up until then her walks have looked like drunken swaggers.  She's definitely improving.

QUESTION:  A couple times over the last 2 days she's panted heavily and we haven't been able to figure out the problem.  Pain meds were good (she's on Metacam, #70 dose once a day), poo and pee done, not hungry or thirsty, not hot.  In checking out her body it seemed like she was having spasms between her shoulders, on her chest near the amp site and also in her butt.  I thought near the amp site it might be nerves or muscles reacting to the surgery and maybe the other spasms were over-worked muscles??  Don't know.  Any thoughts or suggestions on what to do for her, if anything?  The last time this happened it lasted over an hour.

Thanks everyone!

Yay - sounds like Jersey Girl is doing well.  And a poo is great - I was really relieved when Eva's poos and wees got back to normal.  And rolling over for a belly rub is a great sign that she's feeling happy.

From reading lots of different stories on here I think all dogs recover at their own rate, and as long as your vet is happy with the speed of recovery then I think you just have to take each day as it comes and try not to worry.

Eva has had a few panting sessions over the last day or two, but then seems to settle and go to sleep.  I can't imagine what it's like for the body to lose a limb, but possibly nerves fire up occasionally which make it temporarily more painful, and the panting is a response?  If only they could talk!

Hope Jersey Girl keeps on doing well.

It's good to hear from you! I'm sorry you haven't been feeling well but it sounds like both of you are doing much better now.

Congrats on the seven day poop! Isn't that a relief for both of you?! That's great. She really does sound like she's making a lot of progress. The thing to keep reminding yourself of is that just like people, all dogs recover at different rates. You wouldn't expect someone who had the same bug you did to recover at exactly the same pace as you, so it's no different for dogs. Jersey Girl is on her own timetable and so far it's really working pretty darn good. Yay!

About the muscle spasms. Yes, that does sound normal and there's a lot you can do for that. First, keep in mind that Metacam is an anti-inflammatory. It helps with inflammation, but when it comes to muscle relaxation there are better drugs. I would ask your vet, see if Gabapentin is the right choice. Meanwhile you can also sit with her and do doggie massage if she'll allow it, that will make a ton of difference. Here's a few tips, let us know if any of these tips work.

Good update! Didn't JG have to spend some extra time in the hospital? I think she is doing great considering she had an extra hurdle.
I think I told you before that Maggie spent the first 6 weeks in bed, not interested in much of anything. All pups heal and deal in their own time.

I'm glad Mama Bear is feeling better too!

Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. So glad that Jersey Girl is doing well--Lily had the spasms also; it took a few weeks to stop, and then it would still happen every once in a while. Sounds like she's progressing well:)

Joan and Lily

Our beautiful Lily was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her front leg on 12/14/11 at age 8 and had amp on 12/16/11. She completed 5 rounds of carbo. She was so brave and kicked cancer's butt daily! She lived life fully for 4 years, 3 months, and 15 days after her amp. My angel is a warrior princess. I miss her so much.

Thanks for the input and support everyone.  I know you're all right that every dog heals at his or her own rate, it's just so much more comforting when they do it fast!

Jerry -

Thanks so much for the massage info! (!!!)  We have a vet appointment tomorrow morning so I'll ask about the Gabapentin.  Hey since you're so good at keeping details like that straight (I can't remember which drug is for what and always have to look them up), please try to remember that Jersey's vet suspects being on Deramaxx until the day before surgery is what caused her blood from clotting properly.  I'll remember too, of course.  It would be nice if we can keep other doggies from suffering like she did.

Karen -

You are correct, Jersey was in the hospital for 4 days and barely moved the first couple days home so she's definitely a little on the slower side.  She had a problem with her blood - low pcv I think is what they call it.  Basically her incision was oozing because her blood wasn't clotting properly.  Then of course that made her anemic.  I didn't remember that Maggie was 6 weeks in bed so thanks for that reminder.  It does make me feel better.

Eva's pawrent -

I cracked up when I read Eva "did a roach" - meaning she rolled onto her back for a belly rub.  That's a new one for me and I LOVE it.  I'll be stealing that.  Lol.

SEVEN DAYS? S E V E N days?????? Yep, those pain eds can sure play havoc on regular pooping!! I KOW sweet Jersey Girl had to feel better after that!clap

I think I probably already posted this, but for the first two-three weeks I thought I had made a horrible decision to proceed with amputation. Haph Hannah was having such a slow and difficult recoery. Other dogs "seemed" to be feeling great as soon as stitches were out.....I was putting her back on pain meds and she was still up pacing and whining some at night! Knowng Pug Maggie took her on sweet time to recover helped me too!

And actualy, it doesn't sound like JG is all that slow at recocering. It is still soooooo very early in recocery...ESPECIALY with all ner challenges during surgery! You were incrediblh strong....you and PAPA BEAR!! Papa Bear sounds like a good solid foj dation for you and JG during all this!clap

Glad you AND Jersey Girl are feeling better!!

So, she sorta' "did a roach" too when she gotin bed with you?winker Heck, if Greyhounds can do roaches, so can Retreivers and Bull Mastiffs!!clap

Keep those great updates AND hotos coming! Love this Jersey Girl and cheering wildy for her!clap

Lots of love to all!

Joan -

Somehow I missed your post earlier.  Did you do anything to help Lily with her spasms?

Sally and Happy Hannah -

Lol. I had the same reaction to the 7 day wait for her first poop.  It was Friday and she hasn't done it again since!!! We have our first vet follow up tomorrow so I'll ask about it.  Today Jersey barely moved all day.  It's nearly 10pm and she just now had her first pee and only because we carried her outside.  The last pee was 27 hours ago!  That wouldn't be such a big deal if she wasn't eating or drinking but SHE IS!

Sounds like you'll be adopting "the roach" language as well.  Hahaha.

To All The Bears!

I haven't missed an update anywhere today have I? I know you were going to have a vet appointment today, right?

Keep us posted when you can. Maybe the vet suggested organic canned pumpkin (not the pie filling...just the plain) to help with Jersey's somewhat "slow moving" bowels!

Sending lots of hugs to all!
