Hi all - this space is a great resource, thanks for hosting it. My beautiful boy (Malamute Shepherd x, 7 years) comes home today, sans left rear leg. What started as a hematoma turned necrotic, the position of the lump was such that excision wasn’t possible. Biopsies were negative for cancer. My question is - is there a place on this site that offers advice and direction for the families of brand new tripawds?  I feel a little lost, a lot scared, and crazy-grateful to be getting my shadow back. Thanks in advance!

Hi Cindy and Jackson, welcome. Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away.

I'm so sorry about Jackson needing the amputation surgery. Poor guy! Sounds like all the right steps were taken to make sure amputation was a last resort. Rest assured though that he will have a great quality of life on three!

My question is - is there a place on this site that offers advice and direction for the families of brand new tripawds?

You're here! Our Discussion Forums are here for folks to post any questions, worries, celebrations, whatever's happening where they would like community support. So welcome!

Be sure to check out our Tripawds What to Expect articles if you haven't already.

Our Tripawds Recovery Shopping List is also a great resource, as are the Tripawds e-books library.

Oh and please consider having Jackson evaluated by a canine rehab therapist. These folks can assess his strengths, weaknesses, and show you how to help him have a happy, injury free life on three. Even though he'll blow your socks off with his resilience and bounce back, it's a good idea to have him assessed, since caring for a Tripawd can be a learning curve for us. The best part is the Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit so please take advantage of the program.

Do you have any stairs in your home? Other dogs? If so, you'll want to make sure you have plenty of traction for your boy, so that he doesn't slide around (slippery floors are a three-legged dog's worst enemy). And if you have other dogs, it's best to keep Jackson really mellow around them until his stitches come out.

Feel free to share more, ask any questions, we are here to help!

Had to chuckle at that and at Jerry' s response.  Yoj are definitely "home" for THE best resource for everything Tripawd!

First of all, glad you aren't  dealing with that that crap disease!  I know amputation isn't  what you wanted, but it is what will give Jackson a pain free quality  life!!!    Ao good for upj for moving forward.

STAY CONNECTED!!  Recovery isn't exactly a picnic the first week or so, but we are here to help you navigate  through it all.

What kind of pain meds  did Jackson  come home with, dose and frequency?  How much does he weigh?  Some times, not always, once all the hospital  meds have worn off there is a bit of a crash a couple  of days later.  Drinking  and peeing are  important.  Eating and pooping may  take a bit longer.

Some  dogs, like my Happ

y Hannah, are restless the first several days.  Some sleep like a baby.  Every  variation  somewhat normal.

Rest, SHORT leashed ptty breaks and more rest the first two weeks.  No stairs or jumping around.

Keep us , posted and let us know how things are going.

Hugs

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
