Lloyd is our 13yr old greyhound - diagnosed with osteosarcoma on his birthday March 1st and had a front left amputation on March 3rd.

1 month later he's doing well - but we have made the decision to probably not go down the IV chemotherapy route mainly because Lloyd gets really stressed at the vets - worse now since his amputation.

The referral vet mentioned Metronomic Chemotherapy and we have decided to at least try it as it can be done at home.

Having done some research it doesn't seem that common in Britain (most of the research papers seem to come from the US) - I even sent an email to Penn Vets as they are running a research program about the use of Palladia after amputation for osteosarcoma.

I would be interested to read of peoples experiences ( I have already used the search facilitysmiley)

Thanks for this forum it has been helpful.

Welcome to the group.  I'm sorry to hear about your Lloyd's osteosarcoma diagnosis.  I know how heartbreaking that news can be.  But very happy that Lloyd is doing well.  We have quite a few members that pursued metronomic therapies and forewent IV chemotherapy.  If Lloyd really doesn't like going to the vet, it makes sense.  My Brendol actually loved going to the vet, which made my decision to do chemotherapy with her much easier.  Not to mention that when it was chemo day, she was all smiles and tail wags at the door ready to go.  Best wishes to you and Lloyd.  We would love to hear more about him and your other tri Tully.

Karma, Adelaide and the crew, and our forever angel Brendol

Adelaide is a young tripawd Husky, from an injury.  Her amp was on 10/1/12.  She has 4 sisters, Aissa (a senior border collie/chow), Maggie May (a puppy Great Pyrenees), Mathilde and Morrigan and 1 baby brother, Bagheera.  We are all watched over by our angel Brendol, who was dx with OSA 1/30/13, amp on 2/6/13, and left us on 8/20/13.

OOOH! Two Tripawds??!

OK about Lloyd... I know how upsetting that diagnosis is, I'm really sorry, but wow it's great he's doing so well!

The decision as to whether or not to do chemo is very personal and there's no right or wrong way to deal with the cancer. You are smart to make the decision with Lloyd's best interests in mind by considering his fear of the vets, that's one great reason to not do it.

We did not do IV chemo but instead did metronomics and found that it worked very well for us. It was inexpensive, easy to administer and did not impact our quality of life together at all. We believe it bought us lots more time for a total survival time of two years post osteosarcoma diagnosis.

We have been told by oncos that of course it won't be as effective as IV chemo since the dog doesn't get the same amount of chemo, but it's a good alternative that will still give you a fighting chance at stabilizing the disease.

I put together a lot of info about metronomics here, this should help. It's great to hear that oncos in the UK are starting to use it. By the way we do have a Tripawds UK Facebook Group, it may also help you to talk to members who are going through it in your country. I'm curious, what is the protocol your doctor recommended?

And yes, you'll have to tell us about Tully!

Thanks for the links Jerry, I am a member of the UK page-  I've also had a lot of advice from other greyhound owners on the Greyhound Gap page  unfortunately we have a lot of friends who have been through similar- they were angels through the 1st weeks when we had a few periods of doubting whether we had done the right thing. They have nearly all gone down the IV route and that's the way we had intended to go, but Lloyd doesn't do well at the vets (we had one session were he caused the vet to panic as he started to overheat badly and ended up wrapped in cold towels, with ice packs applied to his feet etc) and after Tuesday's visit it took him 2 days to settle - which we think could be detrimental to his recovery.

Tuesday was the 1st time we had heard of Metronomics and since then I have done lots of reading and we have both agreed that we want to give it a try for him. He's 13yrs old now so however long we get will be a bonus.

Tully is a lurcher aged about 4yrs - he lost his back left leg due to abuse, he was found in a drug den with a shattered hip bone. Greyhound Gap took him to the vet who after a long operation repaired it, but Tully refused to use it and after a few weeks of trying various things (hydrotherapy, steep hills etc) his leg was actually withering through lack of use and he was getting depressed, so the vet decided that he would amputate. One day later a cheeky, happy boy emerged.

Lloyd (less than  week after his op- sneaking on to the settee) and Tully.

Awwww what a couple of cuties! I wish I could cuddle with them!

You are a really PAWESOME pet pawrent for giving your doggies the best life possible and keeping their best interests in mind. There is nothing wrong with not doing chemo, lots of folks don't and that's OK. We see lots of folks who don't do it and their dogs live a long time, far beyond expectations (our own Jerry made it 2 years, we've seen others go longer!). And we also see folks do IV chemo and sadly not make it more than a month or two. So really, it's a toss up. All that matter is you're following your heart.

So it sounds like you haven't gotten the exact protocol they're recommending yet? I'm always curious, there are some difference between the way things are done in the UK versus the states & Australia/New Zealand, which seem to have similar methodologies. Let us know what the docs tell you.

Is there a UK forum? As I did post about him on the FB page.
When I was searching for information about Metronomic Chemotherapy then it seems that lots of the links that I found came from this forum so it seemed sensible to join.
Although I use FB regularly the nature of it is that is fast moving so that posts fall from view and are lost. The benefit of forums is that you can search and sometimes find the information that you need.

No, there's no UK forum, Tripawds is a global community and we welcome everyone here in the Forums. Yes, you stated perfectly the value of Forums, with seven years of information being compiled here and in our featured blogs, it's an invaluable way to research topics. The UK Group was started as a terrific way for folks to connect on a local level and share tips about docs, getting the word out about life on 3 legs in the UK, etc. Treatment plans can be different in the UK and it's so valuable for us to know that here as well, so we appreciate your experiences here as well, it really adds to the database of information here. Thank you!
