okay - if anyone is having doubts about amputation on a large breed dog. DO NOT WORRY 🙂

I went in to see Gatsby today at the vets. Day 2. He was up, running around, eating, drinking and being 'Gatsby'. Could not believe what I was seeing.

It was like Gatsby was back to normal only with three legs. Was steady on his feet and apparently had been running around as well.

So... what an enormous relief. So many people had said 'don't do it as he's a large breed'. I can say that if you have to do it, DO.

He is coming home tomorrow after I finish work. The journey begins.

One very happy Mummy

So happy to hear your news! And so happy to hear Gatsby is getting around ok smiley_clapGood luck with his ride home, I hope all continues to go smoothly. Please be sure that they give you adequate pain medication so that you can keep his pain level under control over the next couple of weeks. It can be a night and day change with pain breakthrough, ok?

Can't wait to see a picture of him, your avatar is gorgeous!

Hearing how well Gatsby is doing gives me so much hope for my girl, Cali.  Cali is an English Mastiff, 160 lbs and she is scheduled for amputation on Monday and I have been worrying but overall feel confident with the decision.  Thanks for sharing all of your post-op information.  It is so helpful to hear from another person in the same situation!

So glad to read this. We find out today if our 180lb English Mastiff is a good candidate for amputation after his CT scan. We just found out about his tumor yesterday and are spinning with grief, surprise, and confusion, trying to decide what would be best for him. If the tumor hasn't spread, then we are going to go forward with the surgery. We worry so much about his size and how he'll adjust to life on three legs. He's 5 and I know he has so much more life in him. Thanks for the inspiration!

Rachel and pup, welcome. We are sorry you found yourself in this situation and hope that we can help make your journey easier. Please consider starting a new topic all your own in Size and Age Matters so you can see all the stories of giant breed dogs who have been down this road, and add your own so that your pup may inspire others too. Best wishes to you and we'll see you over in the new topic!

I cannot tell you how happy I was to find this post!!

My Neapolitan Mastiff Lyla, my heart dog, was diagnosed with OSA three days ago.  I can tell you my head is SPINNING.  She is 125lbs and I was so worried about amputation. I have already read Dr. Dressler’s Dog Cancer Survival Guide and we are seeing an oncologist on Monday.  I was worried about her not wanting to amputate due to her size.
