Does your vet refer to another hospital or can you text them? He might need gabapentin,  that is a hugely helpful medication for new amputees.  Again... I'm not a vet. Buprenorphine is a great medication but i don't know if the dosage may need to be tweaked a bit.

Keep the fluids and any good wet stinky food or treats.  Huck latched on to the Delectables, which is mostly water but it did the trick.

Tuna juice, low sodium bouillon are also good.  We like the taste of regular broth/ bouillon but cats can be turned off by the sodium content.  You can also simmer boneless chicken and make your own broth.  Just don't add salt.  They like the chicken too after it's been simmered so you can break it up and offer that too.

Do you know how to take a temp? That would be really helpful. You're at a point that can be tricky to tell what's going on.  101 to 102.8-103 is acceptable.  103 and higher is running a fever.  Some cats run high and 103 is ok but more than that needs to be seen.

Stay calm and watchful.  Check out your alternatives and please keep in touch,  ok?

Hugs,

Jackie and Huck❤

Been following  Jackie's excellent kitty feedback.  I THINK, bit not sure, the Bet is having  her give the Buprenorphine under the to gue and she was concerned  he wasn't  getting very much.

Also she said it has been sixteen hrs since he peed.  I think she said he peed a little bit once in the 24 hrs.

Just pointing this out because  Jackie can maybe give you more guidance

Omay....I'll step back and watch the communique 😎

I have gabapentin for when I run out of the other stuff. I tried some just now instead of the other one.. I can’t remember the name ever. That starts with a “B”. The vet prescribed 1ml every 8-12 hours if I’m doing the gabapentin. It’s in liquid form. Does this even work? I read the article in here about it and it says it’s not proven to work. I just don’t want him to be in pain.
he still hasn’t peed. It’s been over 24 hours now. I gave him some more wet food with water mixed in and he ate all that. I guess I’ll have to see if there’s somewhere I can take him if he doesn’t go soon. The problem is I can’t afford an ER visit now. I just spent over $3,000 for the surgery and my dog is also having issues. Now my cat won’t pee and I’ve been awake all night thinking of how am I going to pay for everything if I have to take him to the ER because that’s the only place open on a Sunday. It’s one thing after the next with my animals.

So sorry you are dealing  with so much stress.  I know you are exhausted.

Yes, the Gabapentin  IS effective for aurgery pain and is prescribed  for dogs and cats after amputation.a lot.     The Buprenorphine is also used for cats a lot.    Is  he showing  pain signals   or just more  along the lines of sleeping  alot, sort of lethargic?

Of course, not a Vet, but I really do think a Vet needs to see him if he hasn't  peed in 24 hrs.  I  understand the financial  limitations, especially  the cost of an ER.  To not have gone for 24 hrs though does require a Vet visit.

Wish I had better suggestions.  At least at the Vet they can give him an IV or subQ fluids if necessary  and, express his bladder if full.

How are things this morning? Many of us used both the gabapentin and buprenorphine together, at different times. In other words buprenorphine on one schedule, gabapentin alternately in separate intervals. The 2 medications do different things and compliment each other very well. They are more effective rather than using just one or the other.

Can you feel his bladder? If he is laying on his side you can take your fingers and gently take hold of his abdomen right about where his legs meet his body. Squeeze gently and pull your fingers down until you feel what should feel like a ball of jello.

Find and squeeze a cat's bladder

I found this really quick, it gives a good general idea. Now with that said, I could not just ever hold my Gazoo like that. He was a male cat that had FLUTD and he blocked frequently until he had surgery. I simply layed him on my counter which was a good height for me too, and I expressed him in the sink. Of course I bleached the sink after but you know what I mean. If you have pee pads you could lay him on the floor and do it over pee pads. It will be messier, but can get the job done. I suppose you could do it in the bath tub also.

24 hours is a long time for cats to go without urination. If he is eating and drinking he should be producing urine. Are you certain he has not urinated some place that you are unaware of?

See if you can feel his bladder and let us know please. I totally understand what you are going through. Huck was a feral kitty that got injured and we also paid a lot of money. We had other furbabies with issues, I totally get it. I just don't want to see you get in to a situation of emergency and have something bad happen.

Please let us know how you make out, ok?

Sending hugs and pawsitive vibes your way sp_hearticon2

I just took him to the vet. They said everything looked good and after they stuck the needle in his bladder he went pee and had a good stream. They are doing a urinalysis just to make sure there’s no crystals, but think he’s maybe just not getting enough water. They said his bladder wasn’t really that full. So I guess I’ll just try to increase the water intake.
He’s not really showing a lot of signs of pain, just wants to sleep. The vet told me NOT to give the gabapentin and the other one together. I think I’m going to try the gabapentin for a couple of days to see if it changes anything .. like maybe it will make him less drowsy than the other one.

Well, I am relieved to hear that his bladder is not too full!! I am so sorry you are going through all of this. Every vet does what they do differently. If he has some underlying issues they may not want to use both medications together. Where are you located at?

The gabapentin tends to make them drowsy at first, but after several doses Huck got more used to it and acted like his normal self. Groggy really isn't the worst thing in the world right now. They honestly need sleep to heal, and they need to take it easy for a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed that they did not find any crystals in his urine.

Please hang in there, you are doing a great job! I know this is stressful and scary. There will be a light at the end of the tunnel, this is probably the toughest part of recovery. And as you can see, everybody recovers differently.

Keep in touch, ok? If we can help in any way, we will. Even if you just need a sounding board to help get through it.

Jackie and Huck sp_hearticon2

Thank you so much. I am in Florida.
No crystals, but they did find a little bacteria so he’s going to get an antibiotic injection.
maybe I can go home and take a nap after this. At least he peed here at the vet!

WHEW! Thank you Jackie and thank you Sally for being here last night!

I'm so glad you were able to get him to the vet so they could check him out. I know this is stressful, and can't blame you for being worried about everything. Try to stay focused: things are on the upswing, they'll continue to get better, so stay strong. Everything works out, really! Keep us posted oK?
