So, Scar my cat is currently at the vet and will be having his left front arm amputated.  I'm just freaking out a little bit due to not knowing what to do post surgery.  The poor guy after the vet applied the Fentanyl patch to his back leg and placed the cone on his head was thrashing and ate absolutely nothing last night.  His head is so far in that cone he couldn't reach the food no matter how high or low I placed it.  I tried to hand feed him and he just thrashed around.  I am grateful that he finally came to terms with the cone and actually slept all night.  Btw I did try one of the softer/Velcro e-collars and he pulled the sucker right off.

Any advice at all on anything would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Scar and Renee, welcome! Your future posts won't need approval so post away. What is the reason for Scar's amputation surgery?

I'm just freaking out a little bit due to not knowing what to do post surgery.

We can help with that! Have you seen our blog posts about Trikitties? In particular you may find these helpful:

Tips for Three-legged Cats During and After Amputation Recovery

Try to relax and breathe. Recovery is only temporary and soon Scar will be back as his usual adorable self.  Sounds like he's getting great care and you have a good team on your side, that's pawesome!

If you are totally freaking out the Tripawds Helpline is also here for you too OK?

Stay tuned for feedback from others!

We jnxerstand the FREAKING OUT PHASE all to well!!   I was so freaked out (before I found this wonderful community), I even cancelled my Happy Hannah's first surgery appointment!!

Jerry has given you links to ABSOLUTELY the best recovery tips you could ever find anywhere!    We have such excellent first hand information from our kitty familes!

After reading through everythw, let us know a y specific questions you may have once Scar is home recovering.  And recovery is no picnic at first, so STAY CONNECTED!!  Eating and peeing are usually challenges somlet us know how that goes.  Oh, and usually, you can take the cone off long enough for kitty to eat and drink as long as you are watching Scar.

Update us after surgery is done.  Let us know when Scar is coming home.

For you.....B R E A T H E......B R E A T H E....AND EAT LOTS OF CHOCOLATE!

Hugs

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
