We have a very energetic Jack Russell who has been crated all his life.  Max doesn't relax or rest in his crate and often makes a huge mess in his crate.  We are trying to look at other options since his rear leg amputation two weeks ago.  We are worried that he will not be able to stand up for long periods of time like he used to.  Leaving him out while we are not home isn't an option as Max is nick named "Captain Distructo"  Any suggestions would be great

Thanks

have you thought of an exercise pen - it would give max more room, and not be as confining as a crate. if you have a small bathroom/pantry/closet that you could enclose with a baby gate , that might be another option to consider... good luck, sounds like captain distructo has quite the reputation....

We have also always crated my Schnauzer Piper and it just wasn't an option after amputation either.  I was able to borrow a very large cage that he stays in during the day now.  Its big enough that he can stretch out completely, stand and turn around to stay comfortable.

Hey Captain Destructo and family! Welcome to Tripawds. How did you lose your leg?

I think that a larger crate is an excellent idea. We've always crated our Tripawd Wyatt Ray and he's never had any physical issues because of it.

I always crated my big greyhound, Duke, too. Well, not crated... exercise-penned. And what a production that was but I won't go into that here. Since his amp I haven't had the heart. And he has only been naughty a few times. 🙂 I'd suggest what the others have... a bigger crate so he has more room to stretch out and hop around. Good luck.

Thank you all so much! Max lost his leg due to a rapid growing and invasive tumor.  It had been removed twice and was back and had cut off blood flow to his rear leg.

I think we will be looking at a large exercise pen for him...because he is so destructive it almost seems like the larger the space the worse he is. He shreds his beds, blankets, newspaper ect... and he is covered in poop and pee.  He's just a busy guy.  We want the best for him so we will try anything.

Thanks Again

Ouch! Poor Max. Glad that his amputation hasn't slowed him down though, what a mixed blessing!

Sounds like he needs to keep his mind occupied while you're away. Here are some ideas:

Also, if he's home a lot all day, and it's financially possible, doggy daycare does wonders for this kind of thing, even just twice a week.
