Harley had one of the masses on his lung biopsied and it confirmed it is cancer but since the sample is so small they can only narrow it down to one of these:  liposarcoma, a carcinoma or histiocyctic sarcoma.  Anyone who is not familliar with Harley -- he is the golden that was scheduled for an amputation of a recurring infiltrative lipoma (biopsies were benign) but xrays prior to surgery showed two masses (4 & 6 cm) so surgery was canceled.

So now that there is finally something confirming cancer, the oncologist as suggested Chlorambucil.  Most of the dogs on this site seem to be on cytoxan or piroxan (I might be misspelling these).  So I was surprised to hear of this drug.

If anyone is familiar with this, please let me know if you had any side effects or just any info.

Thanks!

Harley is an 8 year old Golden Retriever. Amp surgery for an infiltrative lipoma canceled due to two masses in chest. A rescue, he found his forever home on 3/18/07 and left for his eternal home on 1/09/13. His story and medical history are at http://myharley.....pawds.com/

Kathy,

I'm sorry you got the diagnoses.

I remember a couple of dogs over the years with histiocyctic sarcoma but off-hand I don't remember who. Wait.....maybe it was Tate?   I'll see if I can pull anything up on a search.

Chlorambucil is the generic name for Leukeran, which I have heard some oncologists are starting to use in metronomic chemo for dogs. The reason more onco vets use cytoxan is that it has more research behind it, but that's not to say Leukeran won't work as well. This Tripawds blog post describes more about it (see Dr. Wiltzius' comments).

Thank you.  I did find one post in the forum where someone asked about this drug and Dr. Pam mentioned it was worth a try.  I know I wasn't finding much about it anywhere.  At this point anything is worth a try as long as it is safe.

I agree. Ask your onco if they are tracking its use in their patients, I'm curious to know how it's working. Paws crossed for much success!

It is probably the safest drug (versus Cytoxan or CCNU) and I am interested to hear how it works. Who is your oncologist?

Tate was on CCNU for his regular chemo and cytoxan for metronomics , so I don't have any experience with Chlorambucil.  But I learned a lot just with google searches, and I'd look for the research papers.  A lot of them aren't free but I found enough to help me understand what was going on.  Not that I could understand it all but the conclusions are usually pretty clear.

So I hope you find multiple papers that say, "It's a miracle drug!" and "It works especially well on golden retrievers named Harley!"

I had looked at an abstract for some clinical trials in Sept. 2011 I think it was but I was hoping someone on this site had personal experience with it.  I think I'll go back and search for miracle drug for Harley and see what I come up with!  My guess is bikers!

Chlorambucil was one of the options that Rio's oncologist gave us when Rio's mets appeared.  We ended up going with the Kinivet instead.  I was looking back through my blog to see if I could find any of my rationale for why we went with one over the other, but I didn't find anything specific.  What I (vaguely) remember is that the Kinivet was supposed to be more effective on Mast Cell cancer.  When the Kinivet didn't work, the oncologist offered up Chlorambucil again, but at that point I was finished with the chemo treatment route.

Here's a link to a brief conversation I had with Dr. Pam about it...  Not much help, really.  Sorry.

Thanks Rios Mom.  I had also seen that study and I thought I saw there was a clinical trial at Auburn U.  (I'm having a hard time keeping track of what I have and have not read.)  One of these days I plan to get a blog for Harley and chrono his medical history.
