We were also told during chemo that Zeus should not be around other dogs or even where other dogs have been.  Better safe than sorry.  :)

Good luck with the cell count next week!

Lisa

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Great update overall. Try not to worry too much about the low white blood cell count, it happens to a lot of dogs.

You're smart to wonder about avoiding diseases and things. I would definitely be mindful about where you take her. For example, stay away from standing water which can harbor lots of critters. And other dogs too, you just never know. It's a pain, but a smart thing to do for a short period of time. This will be over before you know it!

Hi There,

Hopefully all works out well with the white blood cells and chemo can be finished up.  Just out of curiosity and trying to figure out to do with my doggie... Is Candence a bully breed?  How old is she?

Cadence is an American Bulldog and she will be 8 years old on Christmas Day.  She may  be considered senior in dog years but she still acts like a puppy with all the energy she has.  Has your dog been diagnosed with cancer?  If you have any questions please feel free to get in contact with me.  I'm still learning a lot but am willing to help in any way I can.

Yeah....Cadence was able to do her 3rd round of chemo today.  Everything was right on track with her blood work so now we only have one left to go.  Yesterday we had a bit of a scare.  Cadence threw up two times which she very rarely does.  The poor thing couldn't even make it outside.  I felt so bad for her because she felt so guilty about getting sick all over the carpet.  When she was done she had her tail between her legs and looked at us with this sad look on her face.   I gave her a big hug and a kiss and told her it was all right.  Its been a month since her last chemo so Im not sure if it was from that or she just wasn't feeling that great.  I wasn't feeling great the night before so maybe she had a sympathy tummy ache for me.  We felt guilty about leaving her to go have dinner but when we got home everything was fine and she ate her dinner with no problems.  So far today, she is all good.  I just took her for a nice little walk and she got lots of love from everyone.  It amazes me how people are so kind and have such sweet things to say when they see she only has three legs.  Most of them are shocked its only been a little over two months since the surgery.  Each and every day I become more proud of her.  She is our little pride and joy.

I love Cadence.  She is just a love bug.  Hope her tummy upset is behind her and only good days are ahead.

Yay for knocking down one more chemo session!

I wonder why she was so sick the day before? Did you find anything weird in her vomit? Hmmm...

Our paws are crossed that she doesn't experience any side effects from this round. She really is a fighter, I'm sure she will sail through this one too. Keep us posted.

Yesterday started off as such a good day.  I took Cadence into work with me and she was so happy.  She loves running around the police station and getting love and attention from all my co workers.  She was in heaven all day. The smile never left her face.  Everyone was amazed on how well she is getting around on 3 legs.  I was so proud of my sweet baby girl.

A few hours after we got home last night, she started coughing.  I thought she had gotten something stuck in her throat and she was trying to get it up.  It only lasted a quick minute so I brushed it off as nothing.  She ate dinner as usual and ate everything in her bowl.  A little bit later she played with Daddy.  He had been away for the weekend so she was glad to have him back home.   A short while later, she started coughing again.  This time it was like she was trying to throw up, but  nothing was coming up.  I figured she has just played to hard after eating and she got an upset stomach.

This morning at 1:30 am, the coughing woke us up.  She was lying on her bed and just hacking up a storm.  I got out of bed, turned the light on, and that's when my boyfriend saw blood splattered on the sheet.  We got her in the car and flew to the vet.

Thankfully, the vet we went to for her amputation and treatments, is a 24 hr emergency vet.  At least they had all the records on her history.  The blood work came back with no problems seen and she did not have a fever.  The next step was the chest x-ray.  That did not come back looking so great.  The good news is that the cancer has not spread to her lungs.  The bad news is they saw cloudiness in the lungs which led him to believe she has an pneumonia.  What the heck?  How could she be fine one minute and the next she has a pneumonia?  We were both shocked.  They gave us some medication and told us they would be sending the xrays out to a radiologist.  He told us to watch her to make sure the coughing doesn't get worse and to keep an eye on her breathing.  We took her home and got back into bed.  Luckily, I was able to call into work and take the day off so I can keep and eye on her today.  I'm hoping her oncologist will give me a call sometime today so I can get a bit more information about the prognosis.  I wasn't prepared this morning to hear it was an pneumonia so I didn't know the right questions to ask.

The coughing stopped for the rest of the night.  I did notice that when she got up this morning, and walked to go outside, she was coughing again.  I'm going to try and keep her still today so she doesn't exert herself to much.  She just ate breakfast and ate everything in her bowl.  She is still wagging her tail so she is still happy, which makes me happy.  I just don't want her being in any pain.  That is my main concern.   We will not let Cadence suffer in any way.

Thanks for listening.  I'm just gonna kick back today with my sweetie and take care of her like she has always taken care of me.  I will keep everyone posted on what the vet says.

Okay, so there are some good things here:  her x-rays show no lung mets, that is the most important thing.  Also, the coughing has subsided and she is eating and drinking.

My sister's dog had a similar situation about 2 weeks ago.  We watched him for the day, he played with our dogs all day and everything was great.  She takes him home; about 1.5 hours later she calls us and says he's coughing and won't stop; she was wondering if maybe he ate something he shouldn't have and now it was stuck in his throat.  Long story short, she ended up taking him to the emergency hospital early the next morning.  They did x-rays and saw that his throat looked a little inflamed; said he had some type of "dog cold."  They never called it pneumonia, but our local doggy daycare has posted signs that a "dog cold" is going around right now.

So maybe that is what Cadence has, but a stronger version.  Remember, there's a lot of plusses right now in what's going on with her, so that's really good.  I'm glad you were able to take the day off to keep an eye on her.  Sometimes the best medicine is just having Mom or Dad home to snuggle up to.  We'll be thinking of your girl, I hope she feels better soon!!

Poor Cadence! What a way to start your week, I'm so sorry. But like Maximutt said, there are indeed some good things going on here; no mets is terrific! That was my first thought, so I'm glad those were ruled out.

I hope that a doggy cold is all this is. What meds is she on?

I am hoping its just a doggie cold too.  They have her on Clavamox 250 mg 2 x a day.  She is resting right now which is good.  I dont want her getting up and moving around unless she has to go to the bathroom.  Thanks for the well wishes.

I am sorry to hear about her coughing and pnuemonia.  Like the others have said a lot of plusses going on.  Just remember dogs on Chemo have a lower immune system and can pick up diseases, colds etc a lot easier because of not being able to fight it off.

I am glad to hear over all she is doing great though :)

Prayers for Cadence speedy recovery.

Here we are again- rooting for anything as long as it's not the 'C'.

So I would like to start the B9 chant for Cadence.... B9 B9 B9!!!

I hope she can just blow her nose and get rid of the doggie cold.

UPDATE:   Cadence and I just got back from the vet and according to him it is NOT an pneumonia.   I wanted to jump up and hug him.  He said he looked at the xray as did another vet in the practice and they did not see what looked like an pneumonia.  He listened to her lungs and he said they sound great.  He also confirmed that there are no mets in her lungs. He did another blood test and found the numbers to be all fine.  They were even up a little bit from earlier this morning.  He thinks that maybe she just got something stuck in her throat and she is trying to get it out and her throat is also irritated.  He thinks it has nothing to do with cancer.  The vet said  since she is not coninuously coughing then maybe it dislodged itself and now its just irritated.  He suggested we just wait and see if it clears up on its own.  He did not feel it was neccessary at this time to put her under sedation and stick a tube down her throat.  And of course, wouldnt you know it, while we were there, she never coughed one time.  Go figure.  We are lucky to have such a great vet.  He did not treat me like I was some crazy lady (which sometimes I am) and he is so sympathetic and understanding.  I just want what is best for Cadence and I know that sometimes I can be a bit paranoid about stuff, I just didnt think that her spitting up blood was something that shoule be ignored.  At least tonight we can all get a good nights sleep.

So I guess 2103 isnt looking so bad afterall.  Thanks to everyone for the well wishes.  Having people to talk to about this crazy journey makes things easier to deal with.

Ooooh!  I'm SO excited to read this about dear Cadence!  Wahoo!  Whatchu doing to your mom, Cadence?  Silly girl.  I bet everyone will sleep much better tonight.  Here's to some peaceful dreams and belly rubs.  Congrats!  (And, I don't think you're crazy!)

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!
