Cadence is 6 weeks post amp and doing great.  She goes in for her 3rd chemo treatment next week and so far so good.  Her gums are still pale at times so the vet suggested next chemo session they may do a sonogram of her heart to make sure everything is ok.  Her blood work came back normal after the last chemo session so the vet is a bit perplexed on why the gums are pale at times.  Its kind of random.  Sometimes it happens after a walk, which would suggest blood circulation problems.  Other times she can be sitting there, doing nothing, and when I check the gums, they are pale.  One more thing for me to worry about.  She is a trooper though.  Its amazing to me how she has adjusted to life on three legs so well.

When we go for our walks she still wants to go the same route we used to, which now is way to long for her to go.  She is so darn stubborn though.  She will sit at the corner and want to cross the street.  Its like she is on auto pilot.  We are slowly making her walks longer.  Just like everyone has said, they will let you know when they need to rest.  The other day she started to sit in the middle of the crosswalk.  That was a bit frightening.  Note to self....make sure we don't have to cross any major intersections when walking.

There are days when I still get sad knowing what might be coming around the corner for us.  Cadence has brought so much love into our lives and to think one day she wont be here breaks my heart.  But Im learning to live in the moment and enjoy all the happiness and joy she brings into our life.  She still has so much pep in her step and everyday she makes us laugh, either with a look or playing with her "squawking" rubber chicken.  When she plays with that thing we laugh non stop.  That's what life is all about right?

I tried inserting a few photos so hopefully it worked.

Well I can't see the photos, but it might be my crummy computer (cheap work computer!).  Glad to hear Cadence is doing so well!  The pale gums are a little bothersome; I hope your vet can figure out what's going on with that.  That would really freak me out too!

And I understand when you say that sometimes you get a little sad thinking of might be coming.  That took me a long time to get over, too.  Eventually, I just decided not to worry until someone told me there was something to worry about.  The worry will always be there, but you can push it waaaaaaay back where it won't interfere with your daily life with your girl.  Because she doesn't let it interfere with her life.  She just knows she has her family and her rubber chicken and her walks, and all those things make her happy!   Give your girl a healthy belly rub for me!

Cadence is beautiful.   Does she lay on the leg that she had amputated yet?  Just curious.  Sassy hasn't and that was her favorite side to lay on but one day at a time.  Did Cadence have any side affects to the Chemo.  We start our first tomorrow so I have been reading up on everyone who has had it done :)

Yeah, Sassy lets me know when she is tired she sits or lays down and will not move.  I can say at least I walk her in my yard which is pretty big so don't have to worry about the street crossings.

So far,  Cadence has had no side effects to the chemo.  She is doing the Carbo every three weeks.  The vet suggested only doing the 4 sessions.  According to my vet, dogs rarely have any side effects with chemo.  But I know every dog is different, so I was prepared for Cadence being the exception to the rule.  After each session she was just fine.  Im sure it will be the same for Sassy.

Cadence is now sitting on the side she had the amputation.  I noticed she was favoring the opposite side for a while, but now that some time has gone by she is lying on both her left and right side.

Good luck with the chemo tomorrow.  Give Sassy a big hug from me and Cadence.

Awww love those pics! She is definitely a Daddy's girl!

Dogs are so resilient, slowing down just isn't on our radar even when we lose a leg. We will go and go even if it means we'll pay for it the next day, so it's up to our people to make sure we don't overdo it. Rehab vets have told us that if a dog sits down during a walk, it's time to go back, so your instincts are correct there. Little by little, you can increase them though, and things will get a little more exciting as time goes on.

It's only natural to think about what's around the corner. But you know what's interesting? Unless you have cancer, nobody ever really thinks about what's around the corner in life. I mean, anything could be, none of us have an "expiration date" and we just don't know if we have one year or 50 left ahead of us, you know what I mean? So try to focus on today, the things that are in front of you now, and put that worrying aside. Cadence isn't thinking about it, so follow her lead and life will be even sweeter.

Cadence is beautiful, and you can tell she is a Daddy's girl!  I just wanted to comment on not knowing what is around the corner.  I was well past the 12 - 14 month 'statistics' mark when as I sat outside one evening watching Trouble, I realized I was no longer afraid she would die. There was a peacefulness.  I knew she would surely die one day, but the fear has somehow lifted.  From that day forward, I truly was able to think more dog. You will get to that acceptance mark.  Hopefully it won't take you as long as it did me.

Cadence is beautiful!  I also lost time worrying until I figured out that I was allowing cancer to overshadow our time with Zeus and how sad it was that I was allowing it to steal such precious time.  The disease may eventually take Cadence, but the only way that cancer can beat you is if you let it steal even one moment of happiness - because that is the regret that will stay with you for the rest of your life.  Enjoy your time and love your baby - you may have much longer than you think with her and it would be a shame if you don't take advantage of it.

I hope recovery and treatment continues to go smoothly!

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Cadence looks great!  I hope we get a chance to meet if the Nor Cal group ever gets together again.

When Maggie's prognosis was downgraded to 6 to 9 months I admit I was watching the clock (Mag had mast cell cancer with lymph node involvement).  I was kind of waiting for her to pass, meanwhile she was living her pug life right in front of me.  When she made it to 9 months I figured that any 'extra' time was a bonus.  I finally realized that I was looking at it wrong- I learned not to worry about prognosis or dates.  Be optimistic until there is a real reason not to be. I was so fortunate to have enough time with Maggie to learn that lesson, it has helped me in so many ways in my life.

Great pics of Cadence! She looks like a happy girl.

I know it's so hard to not worry (I'm the Queen of the Worriers) but none of us know how much time we have left. So try to not focus on "what's coming." Make the most of today! That's all any of us can do.

All the best,

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Cadence has had 2 sessions so far and she was fine afterwards.  I took her for walks after each session.  Cadence has always drank alot of water so I did not see a change in how much she drank.  My vet did tell me that some dogs do get tired after their sessions, so if Sassy is more tired than usual, it may be the chemo.  See how she does tomorrow and then ring your vet to see what he/she thinks.  Let me know how she is doing.

Doing a lot better, still drinking a lot but I think they said that was one of the side effects.  Bouncing back good.  Just one little bump about eating but she is doing a lot better.  Acts like she never had a treatment.

I took Cadence to the vet this morning for her 3rd session of chemo.  She was so happy to go see all over her friends there.  I'm so glad  she isn't afraid to go the the vet after everything she has been through.   I think its because she knows after they take her temperature she is gonna get treats.  I got a call about 45 minutes after I dropped her off and they couldn't do the chemo.  Her white blood cell count was to low.  We were given antibiotics that we have to give her two times a day.  We are going to try again on the 26th, so hopefully we will get the green light.

I know that when the white blood cell count is low, they are more susceptible to getting an infection.  Is there anything that I shouldn't be doing with her that may cause her to catch an infection?  I know she probably shouldn't be around other dogs just in case they have something, but should I also be avoiding walks?

Other than the low blood cell count, I couldn't be more happy with her recovery.  She is active, eating well and snoring at night just like before the surgery.  Life is good.

I would be careful walking her just because some diseases do live in the ground.  Definately not around other dogs or where other dogs will be prevelant.  That is just my opinion of course, but we were told not to take Sassy where there would be a lot of other dogs.
