Okay, now is the time we all need to remind you that what you are start I g to see with Barret now is absolutely expected!! Speaking for just me, I was waiting for the post where the hospital meds were exit I g his system and he's starting g to feel the full effects of the major surgery. I doubt that it has anything g to do with hi. being a little "hyperactive". Now that's he's starting to feel un comfortable, he won't be bouncing around as much.

Yeah, the pain thing is a balancing act....the symptoms s of being in pain look just like the sysmptons of being drugged!! This early in the game, his symptoms are probably pain related.

Okay Barret' I'll keep your red rubber balls in a box in the corner u til you feel more like playing!

Okay! Okay! I'll throw just one! Good catch!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Oh Sally is so right. Snoop had that crash third day coming down. Visibly more uncomfortable(patch wearing off) would cry out a bit and panting. Pain meds are a balance, we had a tough time with tramadol, caused a lot of excel learned breathing, took him off and used gabapentin . Keep communicating with your vet to help you through this period. It will be get better, for us it was that two week marker, and then we were cooking with gas! Our baby boy was BACK! Good thoughts your way.

Thanks guys, last night was a ROUGH one.. And I, too, was expecting a crash at some point. We're running on only a few hours of sleep.

I'm not discouraged though.. This little sh*t got past the blockade at the steps to run up and came for me while I was in the laundry, then evaded my capture and ran back down. Of course this was just after I talked to the vet, telling her how pathetic he is being and got a script for gabapentin called in to my pharmacy. He's gonna feel that later...

In other news he peed in his onesie. My fault, I didn't hike it up high enough when we went outside. He has a pink bandage on now aw-shucks

Talk to you all later, I'm starving! Need to find some grub.

That's the face of regret:
 Image Enlarger

Is it normal that I've got to go to rite aid to get his meds, but I'm afraid to leave him alone for 10 minutes? I supposed to go back to work on Monday and already have anxiety about that. Luckily I live nearby so I can come home over lunch for pills and to check on him, but still :( he hasn't been alone at all since he came home. The two minutes I went upstairs he followed. He'll be fine, right?

Deep breathing. Getting in the car. I'll be back in ten minutes....

He'll be fine, of course he will! You're smart, you're doing all the right things, hang in there.

P.S. his little run up the stairs is proof that he's on his way! You just gotta smile right? :)

Everything you've posted is normal. I know right now sucks, but the crash will pass. I think it can be harder with the hyper, hard headed guys. I understand the concept of "keep them quiet" but they don't and find ways to get into trouble.

I was so anxious to leave Cora. I totally understand where you are at. Barret is going to be ok.

Yeah, keep Barret calm? Keep him from jumping on the furniture? Right.. Good luck! Might need a straight jacket! He is hard headed, determined, and independent 100% of the time. I did have to smirk when I scolded him for running up and down the steps though.

Went to RiteAid for his gabapentin... He survived me being gone 20 whole minutes :) gave him his first dose a while go. Seems to make him sleepier than tramadol. Which is good. Guess I should take a nap too... According to the bottle I should not let him drink booze, drive machinery, and I need to call the doc if he becomes suicidal. What is in this stuff?!? Wow...

Still nervous about next week. David has Monday off but he is proving to not be a very good mommy substitute. Some guys just don't have the mommy gene I guess aw-shucks

Heather,

I'm sorry I'm so late chiming in- I'm working two jobs now and it seems like the little time I have to get on the site it's busy and I get dumped off!  I was watching for the 'he's home' post, I am just now seeing it.

Barret sounds like he is doing well actually.  My quad pug Tani takes gaba for her arthritis, and tolerates it pretty well.  It is used to treat seizures and some types of anxiety in people- makes sense to me that it slows him down a little.  At the speed he is going already a little braking might be a good thing.

If you can contain Bear to one room while you are at work he should do OK, especially if you go home at lunch.  Make sure he can't get to his sutures- the start getting itchy a week or so in.

And remember- if Barret wants to visit California he can stay with me big-grin.

Karen

p.s. Erica- I put Maggie in a float coat (before she was a tri-pug) and she was paralyzed!  She didn't fall down, but she refused to move her legs laughing.

Thanks everyone,
I know its still early, but 4 days post-op and this little boy continues to amaze me. He hasn't seemed to lose one ounce of his personality through this process, even as stoned on medication as he is! He even hopped over to the toy box, grabbed a plush toy and took it to the couch to suckle it (we are pretty sure he was weaned too early as a babe. He has always done this to comfort himself... He even used to suckle our cat Neptune). I didn't see that for at least a week or 2 after his first operation.

He is still stubborn and determined to do everything he used to, jumping and running laps around the kitchen and living room at dinner time. He's slowed down a bit, and thankfully hasn't attempted his classic 'jump off the back of the sofa' move, but I do my best to limit activity.

His suture site looks good. Minimal bruising and swelling so far.

Couple of questions for the veterans of the site. First, can the tramadol and gaba be given at the same time? Tramadol is every 6 hours, GABA is every 8 so sometimes they are due around the same time. Vet said they are all safe together (he is also on rimadyl and an antibiotic) but that seems like a lot of meds at one time.

Second, he really wants to lay on his injured side, but once he does he can't get up without yelping and really struggling, then he kind of shuts down and shakes uncontrollably. Any tips on how to help get him upright again without too much pain?

Third, like I said the surgery site looks amazing. However, there's a spot further down on his belly I found today, about 2 inches long that's puffy and a little red. It's about 6 inches south of the sutures and its squishy, can a seroma form so far from the site?

Last, is it normal for a front leg tripawd to curve their back in a C shape when standing so that the front leg is centered? It looks really uncomfortable..

Karen, I'll bring Barret to Cali, mind if I tag along ;) I think I'm going to have to equip him with GPS I've ha so many people tell me they want to steal him laughing

Thanks, Heather & Bear

Hi,

So glad that things are going so well for your absolutely adorable Barret-can't stop looking at that face.I think I can answer the front leg in the center question. Most tripawds that are missing their front legs eventually move their one front leg to the middle to make balance a little easier. My Lily walks with her front leg in the middle. Now, she didn't do it as fast as Barret, but it seems that Barret moves a bit faster anyway with most things:) That may be the reason for the C shape-trying to adjust really quickly-not sure.

I'm sure others will jump in to answer your other questions--in the meantime, give that little guy a hug for ussmiley

Joan and Lily

Our beautiful Lily was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her front leg on 12/14/11 at age 8 and had amp on 12/16/11. She completed 5 rounds of carbo. She was so brave and kicked cancer's butt daily! She lived life fully for 4 years, 3 months, and 15 days after her amp. My angel is a warrior princess. I miss her so much.

Heather, it really is amazing how well he seems to be doing. Bet you can get a picture of Barret picking oit onee of is toys from is toy box! Hint!

I can only tell you about me experience.....Happy Hannah had gabapentin and tramadol together in a.m.---then tramadol maybe once again during the day...and then it seems like a gaba and tramadol again.at night. Of course the milligrams would be very different for Barret than our plus size model Happy Hannah:-)

Napy Hannah didn't start laying on her surgery site until three weeks out.....it was just too sore. So no surprise at all that it's painful when he tries to lay on it.

I imagine the swelling is still fluid just moving around waiting to be absorbed. Happy Hannah's seroma was large fluid pocket hanging down from surgery site.....really large...or seemingly so at the time. Anyway, just my 2 cents worth!

Take care! You are doing such a good job!!

Hey Heather, it's wonderful that you can see the progress he's making even just 4 days out. It's these little things that all add up so keep on celebrating!

As for laying on his incision: some will try to right away, some won't. If he still keeps trying despite the pain the only thing I can think of is to help scoot him up by placing your hands on the opposite side of his incision. If you can't be there for that, he'll quickly adapt. The shutting down isn't him being depressed, it's just him being so tried from trying to get up from that side. It's exhausting learning these things over again.

Follow whatever your suggestions for pain meds that your doctor gives you. I do know many dogs who take gaba and tramadol at the same time (and lots of humans also take multiple meds when they are recovering from surgery). If he has any stomach trouble by doing so then give the pills with food if he'll take them, and let your vet know of course.

3-Paws Up to your Amazing Tripawd! I hope today is a great day for you guys!

Thanks everyone, and a special thanks to Kelly, Erica, and Lara for talking me down from my meltdown last night in chat. The swelling that had me so worried last night is completely gone this morning, though Barret is less himself. It could be the drugs or his soreness. It was another nearly sleepless night last night. Once I do get him up and moving around he seems great (until his sister tried to tackle him).

Talk to you later, Heather

No need to thank me at all Heather. If you knew how many times I needed to be talked off the ledge I just consider it paying it forward. Glad the swelling is down!

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg.
