Duke doesn’t always do this. But last night was a rough night. We went outside before going to sleep at 1030. At 130 330 multiple other times he starts barking and whining at me. We go outside and come back in I try and sleep and he continues to bark. I gave him some medicine and he still barked and whined throughout the night. I’ve been sleeping on the couch beside him bc every time I try to go to my room to sleep which is upstairs he stands by the stairs and barks and whines for hours. Even if I try and ignore him he’ll stop for a little then starts up again. I don’t know what he wants since we’ve been out he’s had some water and pain medicine. I only assume he wants me near so I come back down stairs and sleep on the couch. However last night it didn’t seem to matter where I slept he still wanted to bark and whine. He eventually laid down and went to sleep for the remainder of the morning.

any ideas of what he could want or what I should do. I’m getting pretty tired.

Oh you poor things! I'm sorry, that sounds exhausting. With Duke being so new to recovery, all I can think of is that he is in some type of pain. Behavior changes are a common pain signal. Remind us, what kind of pain medication is he on, and how often?

When he went to sleep, was it just out of sheer exhaustion or did you do something that might have calmed him down? And what happens in the daytime when you try to do things? Is he clingy, following your around?

He is currently on galliprant gabapentin and tramadol for pain. I usually give him a gabapentin before Bed around 10. He used to do the barking and whining before but once he got hurt it’s been worse. To where if I wanted any sleep I had to sleep on the couch. He seems to settle down when I’m on the couch. However last night he wouldn’t. Just kept barking and whining even after I gave him more pain meds and we went outside. I think he was just tired when he did. It was almost 4am. I’ve brought him to work this week as well and he’s doing it again but I think it’s bc he wants to be around the other people In the building and walk around bc he stops when we do. But he’s supposed to be resting. He doesn’t want to rest. Too many smells I guess. So we walk around go outside came back in and I had to force him to lay down. Now he’s finally sleeping.

Hmm ok so this is a pre-amputation behavior that's gotten worse now that he's experiencing more pain. Well, he's definitely trying to tell you that he hurts. Have you tried soft massage and palpating him gently around his body to see if he reacts to a certain area where you touch? The shoulders? Low back?

Thanks for the refresher on his meds. He's getting the standard 3, but they may need to be fine tuned, or you can call the vet and ask for an additional pain reliever like Amantadine. That should help with his anxiety and whatever extra pain he may be experiencing, paws crossed. Give them a call and see what they think about adding it in. Also, Tramadol can cause anxiety in some dogs, we see it happen around here a lot. Was he on it before amputation? Have you ever taken it out at any point? See what your vet thinks.

Also I know I sound like a broken record about this, but rehab therapy for him will really make a difference so I hope you guys can do that (remember the Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit .

Oh and as far as him wanting to be around people, I'm wondering if that's his instinct as a dog to hide his pain and say "look, I'm OK, see?!" Just thinking out loud.

My dog would wake up crying and whimpering after surgery. Prior to bringing her home I put a queen mattress in my office where she is sleeping next to me on her bed and I found it to be extremely helpful if I got up at the random hours she would do this and very loud I may add and I would pet her and rub her head and talk to her as if she was my child I literally would yell her it's ok, mom is right here, your okay and honestly that seemed to work after 5 or 10 minutes of doing that she goes right back back sleep. My doctor also said with the pain meds they can be in a  Hallucinating state so it could also be that but I stayed by her and would pet her and talked to her softly and she'd lay back down and go back to sleep.

Duke got his cone and stamped removed today. I’m sure he’s happy about that. Then we went to this place called dog pub. Like a lunch place with a dog park in the back and you can bring your dog inside or In the back. We had lunch and now he’s passed out. They did confirm it is osteosarcoma from the testing. Offered chemo but I’d need a consult with their oncologist. Don’t want to put him through that.

but he seems happier. Has energy and life in him.

YAHOOO no more cone! YESSS!

That's so cool he's happier now. Isn't it crazy what a difference getting out of the cone of shame makes? Congratulations on making that milestone happen.

About the chemotherapy....I see your other post about alternatives and will comment there.
