I'm happy to hear things are going so well. I do agree with Daniela, keeping an eye on the incision area is smart, it can get quite itchy and some dogs still mess with it
As for what to expect with chemo, I think that every dog is different. Some don't have any side effects and some do. The best thing you can do is to make sure your doc gives you a complete rundown of side effects to watch for (and when, for example many times they appear 3 days out or as many as 10). Being prepared with some anti-nausea and anti-diarrheal medication is also good, be sure to ask for some.
Be prepared to take things one day at a time and see how each one goes. Even if side effects do happen, that doesn't mean they will get worse or continue next time. I think most people know whether or not they want to continue after the first two sessions. That's the thing about chemo, you can always stop if you don't like the effects. Quality of life is #1.
Good luck today, let us know how things are going.

Hi Appa & mum ! just checking to know how the first chemo went. My Johnnie had his 2nd round of chemo last Tuesday. For us everything went well. The nausea medication worked, and he didn't have big effects on his bowel movements. Hope Appa is doing well also.

Our awesome Golden Boy was diagnosed for OSA in April 2014 in the proximal humerus, front-leg amp on 05/20/2014. Finished chemo (Carbo6) on 07/10/2014. Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet. Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues. Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle. October 17: started having seizures. Taking fenobarbital for seizures. April 18: started prednisone.
Actually it went really, really well. He handled it much better than I did. They said he was amazing for them during the treatment. After I got him home, he was a little under the weather for the remainder of Friday but Saturday was a whole different ball game. He was in the toy box, looking for chewies. He was wandering around, harassing the cat... it was... amazing. We had his anti-nausea meds for Saturday and I gave it to him just in case Sunday when he started drooling. But today, he's just panting because it's hot outside and, goddess forbid, I make him go outside to go to the bathroom. I am such a mean mum!!
I switched his food too. I had gotten some freeze dried treats from the local organic pet food store, Crunchies, and he loved them. But they are a little too expensive for a Great Pyrenees sized dog. But they sell the same things, different brand, at Petco. Along with that, they sell pet food that is coated in the freeze dried chicken mixture. I thought, what can it hurt. Well, he has eat more in the last three days than he has since his amputation. We had three bowls yesterday alone. When I asked the oncologist about this, she said that even some human cancer patients under go a complete change in the way things smell and even taste. She said sometimes the texture can even throw people and animals off when they have cancer. With dogs being so smell oriented, she said he may have that smell associated with something different now. So if the new food works, I am not going to question it. He loves it. It's grain free , gluten free and is the "limited ingredients" version... so it's good for him.
Unfortunately, it's also become something his brother, the weak stomach/boweled one, likes too. So that's been a disaster of getting up in the middle of the night to get him outside. But he's getting better. Honestly, I hope it stays like this. He's doing great so far. If all his chemo is this easy (fingers crossed) then this will go so much better than I expected and I can finally stop crying when I think about it.
Now THOSE are really good news! Here we are finishing the first week after the 2nd round also with no problems with the furry patient. As always, the issues are with the mommies. Tomorrow I have to call to schedule round 3. Johnnie is one round ahead of Appa. As they say here in the forum, let's keep a "pawsitive" attitude.
