Corinne, thanks for joining us and jumping into the Forums. Sorry we missed you in the chat, come on back, we're there most evenings.

Your advice is great, makes total sense. I'm so overly cautious about using the cone of shame just 'cause I've never had a pup who didn't mess with stitches, but I'll bet you're right, the ones who will mess with them are likely to do it from the get-go.

Glad to hear things are going well, please feel free to start a brand new topic so we can learn all about your Tripawd, we're ready for the scoop!

Hi Jadalan & Appa,

my experience is similar to Corinne's.  We didn't use an e-collar, but our boy had bandages to protect the stitches and we also used a T-shirt to protect the bandage.   Since he is a front amputee it isn't that easy to reach the stitches, but we kept them covered with bandage until the last stitches were out with 2 weeks, but the T-Shirt continued until the incision was totally healed.  This was a way to prevent him from messing around with the incision and also to keep the incision protected from soil and dirt.  It worked with my boy, but it is true he is an extremely docile dog.  The feeling we have is that he understands we are doing things for his own good, and he cooperated fully during his recovery.  If here were a human child, we would call him "very mature".  I guess this behaviour, and the need or not of the e-collar, depends on the dog's personality.

Regarding the liquid:  we had a little liquid oozing from between two stitches, and then A LOT of seroma on days 5 to 6.  On day 7 it practically stopped.

Good luck and be patient.  This first week is really, really hard, but it does get better.

Daniela

Our awesome Golden Boy was diagnosed for OSA in April 2014 in the proximal humerus, front-leg amp on 05/20/2014. Finished chemo (Carbo6) on 07/10/2014. Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet.   Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues.   Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle.  October 17:  started having seizures.  Taking fenobarbital for seizures.  April 18: started prednisone.

Good for you for being so diligent and observing the drain, the patch, etc.

Just a suggestion, you may want to call the vet back and ask about adding the Tramadol since the patch is not sticiking to the skin. Without good contact it's not gonna' be effective and he needs to have pain meds in him.

Hang in there. This early part is realky toughh!

And be sure and let us know when he poops! We like to celebrate those sorts of milestones!!

Sending you hugs and, hopefully, some zzzzzzz's!

Day 6 -

Well, it finally happened.  We pooped!  And I never thought I would be excited to say those words.  While it was a good thing, it was unfortunately in the house.  But at least it happened right?  And again this morning after we had just taken him out.

In other news, he's started to get strength back.  Sunday night he walked himself to the front of the couch to lay near my boyfriend who slept downstairs.  While I was getting ready for work, every time I came down stairs, he was in a different spot or different position.  So, we're starting to learn that we need to walk on our own sometimes too.  He still needs help at the end of the day when he's tired and sore or when we take him out but he's trying.

Now if only he would sleep through the night without crying. I slept (and I do use that term loosely... about 20 minutes the whole night) next to him on the floor last night because he wouldn't sleep unless he could see and touch me.  Which was sweet and I loved, but my back is not amused.  He seems to love his bed.  Although, I bought 2 different ones to see which he prefers and he has made his choice.  Meanwhile the other Pyre, Patronus is dragging and kicking the other bed out of his way so he can lay in that exact spot.  Doesn't matter where it is... that's his spot.

He's off the Fentanyl (may have spelled that completely wrong) patch and still taking the Carprofen... but we've been told to add his Tramadol back.  He's less restless but still agitated.  Now if only he'd stop trying to scoot his butt across the floor instead of standing to walk.  He's rubbed his little shaved butt raw and I know it's probably bothering him.  But we see the surgeon tomorrow to get the drain removed so maybe we can get a bandage over it.

I am in much higher spirits compared to when we first brought him home.  He's a trooper.

Hoooraaaay for the poopy dance! That's awesome, glad to hear things are moving along laughing

Meanwhile, his pain regimen sounds pretty typical and helpful. Adding the tramadol back in should make a difference in helping him feel better. If he gets more agitated after being on it tell your vet, some dogs just get really anxious on it.

Good luck today, sounds like things are just going to keep getting better (and you'll get some sleep now too!)

Well, last night I thought he might have torn part of his staple loose.  Now the surgeon wants to see us today after viewing the pictures of it.  At least they can take a look at his poor butt.

Appa is STUNNING!! Just BEAUTIFUL!! Thank you for sharing these!!

I love the bed stories a d also how your other pup is claiming his spot regardless!,

Yeah, I slept downstairs on blankets a d pillows so I could be next to Happy Hannah as sne could 't climb the stairs and would jist cry and barkmof I didn't stay with her. Like you, I didn't sleep well but I sure lpved being by her side! I eventually bought a mattress a d put it on the floor and we both slept on it

Yeah, it sounds like Appa really needs somempain meds. Ask the vet about Gabapentin....a lot of us had good results with that too. It's just rough on large older dogs!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAYclapclap Poopy dance going on over here!!clap SIX DAYS!!! OWWWWWW!! Glad Appa is " oving" better in every sense of the word!

Post when you get back from the vet and let us know what he says andmif he has any salve or anything for her butt. Maybe you could customize some of your shorts for her.seriously....I know som eone fixed up a pair of her boyfriends boxers for a similar situation! Don't know if "breifs" would work or not..

Will lookforward to your next post. Hang i there!, It's still very early!!

HUGS!

The surgeon took out Appa's drain yesterday and he said his incision is healing great.  The spot on his but is nothing really to worry about (it looks worse than it is apparently) and we have ointment and antibiotics just in case.  He didn't eat last night afterwards or this morning and I was a little worried.  I am a panicky mom, what can I say?

But when I came home from work, our roommate told me he went out to bring the trash cans in and Appa was standing near the door on his own.  When I walked through the door, he met me at the end of the foyer hallway, tail wagging like crazy.  He followed me to the kitchen and sat down for the usual hug demand.  (Basically he keeps sitting in front of me to block my path and won't get up until I kneel down and give him what he deems is a sufficient hug.  I have never taught him to do this... this is his thing.  He loves it.)

I think I have figured out the food and drink thing.  I watched him try to take a drink from his normal water bowl and he couldn't because the cone was in his way.  So, I am hoping he will continue to stay mobile and we can remove his cone to allow him to eat and drink from the same bowl as his brother.  I don't know if that will fix the problem or not but I am hoping.  In the meantime, I have been mixing in an organic chicken/veggie moist refrigerated food and he ate half a bowl.  Our agreement was if he ate, he got his favorite treat, a pig ear.  Of course, he wouldn't eat from the bowl unless I was holding it, but I will take what I can get.  He's spoiled.

It was that moment when I walked through the door that I felt like I could take a huge sigh of relief.  I am so happy and I am so proud of him.  I may have cried a little bit.  I don't have kids.  I just have my boys: the two Pyres, the cat and the tortoise.  Seeing him up and moving... we can do this. He may be an older boy but we can do this.  We'll keep each other going.  (Even if I have to hand feed his furry butt... winker)

Well I'm a little teary eyed too! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE that he got in his "you better hug me" position!, And to see the tail wagging and the sparkle start to come back.....NOTHING BETTER!!

I'm sure yiu're probavly doing the elevated bowl thing, but just thought I'd me tion it. It's more of a muscle strain for big dog amps. to jave to bend down to the floor level for their food. And ueah, the cone defimitely off while eating and drinking.

Yeah, dogs are our world, that's for sure! No one understands that better than the souls here!

Kee the great news coming! SMILING GOING ON OVER HERE!!clap

HUGS! And extra treats!

Sally and Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Oh yeah.  The food bowl has been raised since both boys were tall enough.  Patronus (my boyfriend's Pyre) is only 6 months older and has bad knees.  So we keep it elevated.

Appa is gorgeous. Much of your story sounds familiar, you're a couple days ahead of Sam .... His surgery was Tuesday. We didn't get a patch, but he's on gabapentin(they suggested stopping it, but he was on it before surgery and I was afraid of stopping cold turkey so I halved it), carprofen and tramadol. Pretty much the same meds as before, just less. Which is crazy.... Less pain for this kid after surgery than before. Keep us posted on how things go!

Katie, human momma to Sam, a 9 year old yellow lab who stole my heart. Diagnosed with OSA 4/17/14. Entered CycloSam study at University of Missouri which did not hinder tumor growth. Sam fractured his leg at tumor site on 7/2/14 and was exited from the study. Amputation surgery 7/8/14. Lost his battle 9/25/14. Forever in my ❤️

Wow, your Appa surely is one handsome GP.......Sounds like things are coming along well for all of you, and that is great news. Each day does get better, and you've gotten a ton of fabulous advice here for sure.

Hoping each day continues to go well, and as Sally said, many special treats are a must for your sweet big guy.....!!

You bet you will get through this! He sure sounds like his old sparkle is coming back, what a sweetie.

Glad you got the meal time thing all figured out. You're doing whatever it takes and it's working, especially when it comes to removing the cone for eating. I say why not, if it will make him comfy when he's chowing down then so be it. Yay!

P.S. You're not panicky, just vigilant. It's good to be on top of things like this, you're doing great. How is his brother doing with all this?

Patronus is handling this well.  He's a little jealous of all the attention Appa gets but when it comes to treats and love when I give something to one, the other gets the same anyway.  So he's still spoiled rotten.  I just refuse to bring him his food.  Which I think that is the most confusing part because I do for Appa.

Otherwise, we're doing very well!  Other than a bit of stubbornness with picky eating (basically won't eat anything but what I eat or canned food).  We've gone to the bathroom outside, we're drinking from our normal water bowl with his brother... it's good.

And, well, the time has come.  We've successfully had our staples removed and tomorrow we start chemo therapy.  They confirmed what was in his leg was cancer, suspected osteosarcoma.  We are still waiting for the final analysis to Stage him.  But the doctor is optimistic due to the fact that his lungs and other limbs are clear.  Now I just need to prepare myself for what to expect with the chemo IV.  Apparently we just drop him off in the morning, he'll have an IV all day... then he comes home for three weeks. Repeat 4-5 more times.

Any inputs on what to expect?  Hints?  Tips? Tricks?

What I should prepare myself for?  Because, once again, I have that guilty, gut-twisting feeling that I am putting him through this just so I can have more time with him.

Hi, Jadalan & Appa.

Even though the staples are out, my recommendation is to keep taking care of the incision to prevent him from licking or scratching.  It does take about a full month to really heal, so you should continue cleaning and disinfecting, and perhaps think of dressing him up with a t-shirt to protect the incision.

Chemo is a hard decision.  My Johnnie (golden retriever, age 6) just took round 2 of carboplatin this Tuesday.  Fortunately he is managing it very well, with nausea medication for the first 4 days.  Fortunately, he is not a picky eater, but we have switched him to home-cooked meals since the diagnosis.  For this post-chemo period I am giving him chicken soup with carrots and a bit of brown rice, divided into 3 meals (a smaller breakfast + lunch and dinner) in order to help with digestion.

I have also had the same mixed feelings about chemo, and am only going to continue if he continues to react well.  Even though he had a wonderful recovery from the surgery and did well after round 1 of chemo, the night before the 2nd round of chemo I almost didn't sleep. It is a mixture of anxiety and guilt, I guess the responsibility of the decision.

Good luck to you both and am crossing my fingers that he will react well.
