Hello everyone!

My name is Scott & I have a 7 year old, Saint Bernard cross named Mila.

She had surgery earlier this week (Monday, May 17th) to amputate her front left limb due to osteosarcoma of the distal radius. She had a few complications in the post op period (anemia & arrhythmia) that required treatment with a blood transfusion & some heart medications. Everyone was quite worried about her for a couple days BUT she powered through and was finally discharged today (Thursday, May 20th)!!!

Unfortunately Mila would not walk for them in hospital. I guess she would kind of squirm on the ground (for lack of a better word) as if she wanted to get up but then would just go deadweight when they would try to help her up. She has done the same thing a couple of times at home here where she rests on her right elbow and kinda squirms and positions herself as if she would like to sit or stand up, however, when I go to try and assist her in standing she just goes limp.

As a large/giant breed dog, I can’t help but be worried about her and start to second guess my decision a bit. Having said that, I do work in the veterinary industry so I’m aware that it’s still very early and that she will need to re-learn how to walk & will do this at her own pace. I guess the reason for my post is to look for any advice/personal stories/reassurance about getting her to start to walk? What has other people’s experiences been like? Do you have any advice? What kind of timeline should I expect? What can I do to help her? Stuff like that!

Thanks so much!

Hi Scott and Mila, welcome. I'm sorry you had to join our club, but glad you found us. Mila is a rock star, that's wonderful she bounced back from that scary time.

Her body has been though a lot, and yep, she is on her own timeline. Surgery recovery is exhausting! Plus, a giant breed dog tends to need more time than a smaller pup, and who can blame them right? Also, Saints tend to be on an even more unique timeline for some reason, but they do get back to the new normal in time! Just check out Thurston's story for some inspawration! So as hard as it is, try not to compare. She's her own dog, and she will recover at her own pace, all dogs are different.

Meanwhile, how is Mila's pain being managed? What medications is she on, how much, and how often? One thing to consider is that many times meds need to be adjusted because a dog is getting too wonky from them, or not getting enough relief. So it's possible her meds need tweaking, especially if she has a history of being sensitive to medications.

Right now she should only be going outside to potty, on leash, and that's it. How is her appetite? Is she staying hydrated?

I know it's a nervewracking time, but you can do this! And lean on us, we are here to help.

Hi Scott,

We might be just a week behind you.

Our 7 year old Saint Bernard Minnie has just today been diagnosed with bone cancer in her front left shoulder.

They are now checking if it has spread to the chest and if it hasn't, we are going to amputate her paw.

The description of Mila going limp sounds just like a proper Saint reaction though.

Minnie did the same when I was helping her in the car to go to the vet so I instead of helping her it was more like doing it all for her (lifting 50kg limp dog into a car is definitely a challenge).

Good luck to you and Mila

Hope to post soon that we still have our Minnie, just on three legs 🙁

Hi Anita, thank you so much for your supportive feedback for Scott. We hope to hear from him soon!

And meanwhile, please consider starting a new topic all your own in Size and Age Matters, so that we can help you and Minnie on this journey. We are here for you so ask any questions you'd like!
