Hey everyone! My 40 pound walker hound had her right front leg fully amputated last Monday. She slept most of the time for the first 7 days, had one day of almost behaving normally. Now, for the last 2 days, she’s been crying and whining a lot. Her incision looks great, no swelling or redness. I’ve touched her all over and she doesn’t whimper. She goes back to the vet Saturday. She’s also back to sleeping all day. I *think* her incision is healing and it’s very itchy and driving her crazy, which is why she’s crying. It’s a typing hound whine. She’s eating, drinking water and going potty just fine.

Please help me out. Thank you so much!

This. is a good sign, and sleeping all day is okay for now too! No need to be up and about at all until she is all healed up. What's her name?

FYI: Your future forum posts will not require moderation.

It sounds like she is doing as well as can be expected right now. The crying out and whining may indicate phantom pain , which is common and can be addressed in various ways. Check out any phantom pain link for details.

It would also help to know what pain meds she is taking. Check out the various pain management posts for tips identifying and treating pain.

Thank you so much! Her name is Blanche Deveraux, yes named after the Golden Girl. smiley4

She is on 75mg of rovera once a day, she gets 300mg Gabapentin 2X’s a day and 50mgs of trazadone at night if she’s restless.

Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction with the other forums and tips!

What a cute name you picked out for her!

If she continues to show pain signals this week, let your vet know. Don't forget to take advantage of the Tripawds Foundation Rehabilitation Reimbursement program. These experts can help identify if she is in pain and how to treat it, as well as educate you about the best ways to keep her injury free. The best part is the Foundation may pay for your first rehab visit

THANK YOU! They upped her Gabapentin by 3 times the dose and added another medication after calling the surgeons office for advice. Ms. Blanche seems to be feeling a little better. She got up and barked at the delivery man today, she was very proud of herself. 😂 They said it was probably caused by her nerve ending trying to attach to a limb that is no longer there.

this is the best place for tripaws, thanks again!
