Hello all and thank you in advance for any advice.

Our mini-assie, Indy, had his front leg and scapula removed due to a bone tumor 5 days ago.  He seemed to be doing very well the first two days, considering.  Hopping slowly, excellent appetite, drinking water, bathroom.  By evening day 3, we noticed he made a loud yelp when standing up.  We checked all culprits and couldn't discover anything.  It happened again in the middle of the night when got up.  So, day 4, we notice he has a painful response and yelp maybe 1 of every 3-4 times getting up from a laying down position, and only during those times.  The pain scared him so badly he was shaking and panting.  We called the vet where he had the surgery.  They said to increase is Tramadol, which is the opiate pain killer.  He is also taking an anti-inflamatory, but thats it.  We added a small amount of sedative to help his shakes and anxiety from the pain.

Well, here we are day 5, and more of the same.  We've been waiting all day for a call back about trying Gabapentin.  (for nerve pain).  They've been too busy with multiple surgeries to call back yet.  Uf.  We actually have Gabapentin in the house, as our usual vet prescribed it for when the tumor pain was bad and we were waiting to get in for surgery.  We haven't used it yet because we want to make sure it is safe with his coctail of medicine.

Mostly, I'd love to know if their pet had similar occasional acute pain during movement a few days after surgery. Did it go away.  Did anyone use Gabapentin and find that it helped with this type of pain?

Thank you if you can share.  Hate to see this pain and anxiety he is exhibiting.

Hi Julie, welcome. Your future posts won’t require moderation so post away.

What you are describing sounds like phantom pain , not uncommon But it is also mostly preventable when the right post op pain management is given. And yes Gabapentin works great for this type of pain. Smart of you to call the vet before giving it to him though. Call them again if you don’t hear back.

Click on the phantom pain link for info. Sometimes other treatment is necessary like acupuncture and possibly other treatments but oftentimes Gabapentin is enough. We will keep our paws crossed that it is.

Let us know how things are going tomorrow ok?
