My lab had his right front leg amputated yesterday. He's still in the hospital. Has anyone else had a dog so young with this? How did they make out with surgery/chemo/prognosis? We are planning on chemo then Dr. Masons vaccine trial. We're taking it one day at a time and want to focus on quality time for him. Thanks in advance this is all so overwhelming.

Marshall & Mom, thanks for registering, your future posts won't require moderation.

I am SO sorry you're dealing with this, he's still such a kid! But yes, we have had a few dogs in that age range develop osa. One of them is Bart, who is STILL kicking cancer's butt over five years later! He is a Tripawd LEGEND! Here is his story, I know it will give you the inspawration and hope that you need right now.

Be sure to check out Jerry's Required Reading List and the Tripawds e-books Library for more tips and help. And of course our pawesome community here will chime in very soon I just know it.

Meanwhile, we wish you both a speedy and uneventful recovery. Which vaccine trial are you referring to?

Please let us know how we can help, we are here for you.

Welcome to the group no one wants to join.  I am sorry to hear about the diagnosis.  Let us know how the trial turns out.  I saw that vaccine but the information came out too late for Sassy & I.

Overwhelming s an u derstatement.....it's a blankety.blank night are!

We are here with you, okay? We i derstand like no others can!

The first two weeks of recovery can be a little "rough". Some dogs take more ti e to recover than others.....some less. Being younger does have some advantages, so Marshall may have a smootherr recovery than so e. Onex he starts getting hs sparkle back, slowing him down will probably be the nard part!

Try and chunk t down for now. Just focus on getting him ho e and getting through the recovery. Oh, and whenyou pick him up from srgery, jjst ignore the incision and look into his eyes and hug him and tell him what a good boy he is! Watch him wag his tail!

Remember, Marshall doesn't care avout any ole' stupid diagnosis and he's certainly nobody's "statistic"! He is MARSHALL and he will do just fine!!

Try and get some rest...while you can! And remember, you are not alne!

Hi Marshallsmom, I am so sorry you have to deal with this awful thing in your beautiful pup, especially him being so darn young. Everytime I read of someone here that has a young dog or cat with cancer, it deeply saddens me. The day I learned my Polly had her first cancer at aged 6, I was pretty shocked, but 19 months just is not right. I've had Labs my entire life, and they will always hold a very special place in my heart. I am keeping you in my thoughts and truly hoping you and Marshall will fight and beat this thing.

Marshall is home and doing well. We are amazed at how he gets around so well and seems to have adjusted his stance. He has a Fentynal patch, Metacam and I gave him 1 tramadol bc he was starting to whine and seemed uncomfortable. He's sleeping now.

Yay for Marhall's homecoming!

Be aware that the patch may make him a little crazy, especially when it wears off. I would also ask your vet to verify the Tramadol dosage, 1 pill may not be enough, you may need to figure out a good dose to keep him calm and pain-free and avoid "wind-up" pain by not giving him enough.

I hope you both have a very restful night! Keep us posted. We are in the Chat Room right now if you want to hop over!

Always absolutely check everything with your vet and don't take my word for it, especially as maybe you/we don't know for sure what medication Marshall is on, but... we were told post surgery that Tramadol is a relatively safe pain-killer and administering an extra pill, if Marshall is uncomfortable or can't sleep, SHOULD be okay. Best advice is that- ask your vet if you can give Marshall extra Tramadol.

And be prepared to be amazed at how fast Marshall recovers!

Cheers from Australia,

Thanks everyone! He actually did his first poop and pee in the hospital the morning after his surgery. He's eating and drinking well. Today is 4 days and he seems more uncomfortable. His breathing is very fast more than 60/minute. The vet had me give him 3 tramadol and take his temp. It was 102. They said if it was 103 to bring him in. I feel bad for him. I hate that his breathing is so fast
