Amputation Costs

  • What city/state/country/date did your Tripawd have the amputation? – Marietta, GA.  8/24/11
  • Total cost of surgery?  Actual amputation, 2 nights at vet (one night before, one night after) and all meds was just over $1,100.  there had also been just over $700 spent the week before for an overnight stay, surgery to see if the tumor could be removed (it couldn't) and for the biopsy, one set of traditional x-rays day before the biopsy (day we first saw the tumor) and then digital x-rays the day before amputation.  We shall see how much more it costs for future stuff…
  • Private practice or teaching hospital?  Private
We don't know yet if we are going to do chemo.  Discussing it with the vet tomorrow; but I think we aren't going to do it…
Also, in case it matters – he had a level 3 fibrosarcoma on his left shoulder.  Amuputation included scapula and quite a bit of muscle.  Lymph nodes came back as clean.
Editing to add chemo information:
Spencer is around 75 lbs.
First time:
Type of chemo:  15 weeks, once per week, in 3 week cycles.  Week 1 was originally adria and cytox and then weeks 2 and 3 vincristine.  But he ended up having some heart issues, so we only did the one dose of adria and swapped instead to mytox for weeks 1 of each cycle.  Mytox weeks were just under $400, Adria weeks were right around $175.  This covered the IV, the meds, the bloodwork and also antibiotics for mytox weeks.  The one week he did the adria and cytox I think it was like $350.
He handled all of it well; but the cancer still moved to his lungs.  We are trying to buy him some more time, so he is now doing carboplatin, once every 3 weeks.  That is just under $400 for the chemo/IV, bloodwork and 2 weeks of antibiotics each time.

Jac and Angel Spencer.  Spencer was 5.25 years old. He fought a grade 3 fibrosarcoma, started on his shoulder.  Left front leg amputated in August 2011.  15 weeks of chemo finished 12/22/11 (mytox and adria).  Lung mets found on x-rays 12/28/11.  Started carboplatin 1/6/12. Went to Heaven on 2/27/12. I miss him like crazy every day.  See his blog here:  http://spencer.tripawds.com/

We live in the Oklahoma City, OK area.  Scout's amputation (1/11/11) was performed at a (private practice) specialty surgery center by a board certified surgeon.  Total cost for amputation, one night stay, all pain meds, and follow-up was $1500. An MRI at this same practice was also $1500-- I thought it strange that an MRI was the same price as a major surgery/overnight stay.

Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011

Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011.  Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs.  If love alone could have saved you…

What city/state/country/date did your Tripawd have the amputation?   State College, PA  -  December 1, 2011

Total cost of surgery: Biopsy $500; CT Scan of lungs $1100; Amputation (w/another biopsy of entire leg, one night hosp. stay and pain meds) $2000

Private practice or teaching hospital?  Private practice

Chemotherapy Costs: 6 rounds of Carboplatin at $400 each (includes CBC at each visit to check WBC count)

Follow up x-rays at 2 months from amp: $500.00

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Daisy and I got off lightly, too.  Her amputation, overnight stay and all the meds that went along with it was $433.  The xrays prior to surgery and needle aspirate of her joint was $155.  The leg was sent to the local vet school for pathology and it cost $49.  Grand total $637.

My normal vet practice did the surgery (Columbia, MO).
