I don't think I've filled this out yet...

Amputation Costs
  • What city/state/country/date did your Tripawd have the amputation? Dallas, TX, USA, November 2012
  • Total cost of surgery? $2700
  • Private practice or teaching hospital? Referred to emergency animal surgical center by Veterinary Specialists of North Texas. Dr Roof is the oncologist. I think Dr Reaugh at Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center did the surgery. Private practice.

Chemotherapy Costs

  • What size is your dog? 41 lbs pre surgery, 35 lbs post surgery
  • Type of chemo given? Palladia
  • # of sessions? 3x a week for 6 months
  • Total cost of treatments? About $300-$400 a month
  • Private practice or teaching hospital? VSNT private practice in Dallas

Our total treatment cost is going to be around $9000 to $10000 when you count all the ultrasounds, lab tests, vet visits, emergency care when the tumor ruptured, etc etc.

We paid 800 for amputation and another 400 for prep and meds. Louie is doing great. We pay about $150 a month for a herbal regiment and have not done chemo.

We live in SoCal and had the amputation done at a local vets office who have 2 ortho specialists there.

The City of Angels in LA wanted $5k for amputation and we couldn't even begin to afford that.

Northside Veterinary Clinic in San Bernardino did a wonderful job and we had no infections and no problems.

California Veterinary Specialists took care of Louie during aftercare and that cost about $300

We're in the Balkans. We went to Macedonia for surgery. I'd never had a pet let alone having to deal with such an ordeal. I have no idea as to the anesthesia used. The final cost was $103.00. I took out the stitches myself.

Bless you for helping your pup, it couldn't have been easy in a place where things like this don't happen very often. You are a brave and loving pawrent.

No decision made yet.

What clinic did you use?  Are you happy with the care given?  Considering amputating my dog's front leg to extend his life.  He is an eleven year old golden.  He has cancer on top of his paw and we were told in February that all of the cancer could not be removed with laser surgery.  Had we decided to try that she was going to refer us to someone in Fort Wayne.  Rusty has just started limping and we just aren't ready to let him go.

I did happen to read your posts when you were trying to make the decision.  Meeting with our vet tomorrow to see if a cortisone shot will help short term and to see where she will refer us to.

Hi clg,

Yes, we were satisfied with the care at East State Vet Clinic.  We were apprehensive when we found out there was no overnight supervision during Libby's stay.  However, the surgeon reassured us all would be fine and she wanted to keep her to manage her pain and make sure she stayed hydrated.  Looking back I'm really glad she spent the first night at the vets.

Libby didn't give us any indication she was ready to let go, therefore we weren't going to let go either.  She did great and is still doing super.  She turned 10 in April.

If you'd like to get a consult from East State I would encourage that.  A second opinion never hurts.  Do as Jerry suggests and register as a member.  This site is an enormous help when facing this decision.

I just happened to open this thread and see you directed questions to me.  When you register, please send me a private message if I can be of any more help.  Good luck to you!

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
