Hindsight is 20/20 when you adopt a rescue dog. If we had understood the differences between working line German Shepherd Dogs (like Tripawds Spokespup Wyatt Ray ), versus show line German Shepherd Dogs (which our fearless founder Jerry was, mostly), we would have been better prepared as far as knowing how to work with Wyatt's needs and personality quirks.

We wrote the following article for another website, The Guild of Shepherds and Collies, as a way to educate people about the differences in German Shepherds. Just as not all German Shepherd breed lines are identical, the same holds true for many other dog breeds. Before adopting any Tripawd, do your research on the breed.

Really interesting and informative article Rene!! The color distinction and stance position really show the outward differences.

I think you can be very pleased knowing that Wyatt DEFINITELY has a job with you two! He is a very busy boy trying to regulate things and being a spokesdawg at the same time.

I like how you reinforced to still seek out GSD rescues. Having more information on their breed just makes the transition that much smoother.

LOVE!

Very interesting, I had no idea there was a difference amongst the breed. Wyatt is definitely a regulator!

Very interesting. I notice way more of the low-slung show dogs now than when I was growing up. Back then we saw GSD guide dogs and other working dogs, but not many who were bred for the show ring.

Labrador Retrievers are similarly differentiated, with people referring to them as "English" or " American" types. The English are blockier and were bred for the show ring, while the American are the field retrievers. There is a lot of overlap in the two, though.

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Well thanks for checking it out folks!

It's just so important to know the breed so that you're prepared with whatever issues come your way, especially in relation to their health.

Elizabeth you are correct, regulating is Wyatt's favorite activity. It's up to us to make sure he does it the right way, not the spazzo way that you saw some of back in May! Always keeping us on our toes.

Kathi, I only recently maybe within the last couple of years, learned there was a difference between Labs.

As for rescues, yep, I'm all about that. The reason so many purebreds end up in rescues is people don't understand what they're getting as a puppy. Education saves dogs, no doubt about it.

Wow...this is a very interesting write up and something I had never really thought about in regards to behaviors.  As with GSD, you have the American bred Doberman and the European bred Doberman.  There are differences in their physical appearances (ED has a little more of a block style head and heavier boned while the AD head is a little more narrow in the wedge shape of the head and not as heavy).  Leland definitely came more from the American bred Doberman and he dealt with separation anxiety, fear of loud noises, more laid back (was happy to just hang out and be rubbed), and didn't ride well in the car at all (constant whining).  Lucian we know comes from European lines and he can be quite hyper (he'd rather run and explore non-stop than just hang out and be rubbed), needs a lot of exercise, doesn't appear to fear loud noises, and doesn't appear to suffer from separation anxiety.  We just assumed some of the difference between Leland and Lucian came because we have left Lucian unaltered.  Perhaps some of the difference in behavior comes from the European line as does with the GSD.

Thanks for sharing this valuable info!

Excellent article and very interesting.

I didn't realize that GSDs get as large as they do. I met a fairly young one last week and she was absolutely beautiful. But I was so surprised at how big she was! She was so friendly and loving, a far cry from the one that attacked my little sister when we were kids.

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

Thanks for the reminder Sally...lol!!!  After reading Rene's article and doing some more researching between American and European Dobermans I have come to the conclusion that Lucian's other personality (A$$hole) is just in his Euro genes.  He's just so much more driven and like an Energizer bunny than Leland that if he doesn't have an outlet he will take it out on the furniture.  From reading about the differences I've learned that American Dobermans are more laid back and are content being couch potatoes and getting belly rubs.  The American Doberman has been bred to be more of a family pet.  While European Dobermans are still very much working dogs and are happiest working and being constantly active.  Apparently, European Dobermans have to pass a working test (ZTP I think is what I've seen mentioned) before they can be bred so this working gene so to speak is carried on.

Well, I'm sure that's more than you really cared to know about (does Bullmastiffs have this going on?).  It's just fascinating that the same breed of dog can be so different in their physical and cognitive appearance based on where they come from.

Oh and we have new furniture coming in tomorrow...we're running out of couch cushions...oh-my

Send up prayers and keep fingers crossed that Lucian doesn't start making a meal out of the new couch, chair, and ottoman.

Yep, Leland is definitely part of the Euro breed! Interesting how they make sure to keep the "working gene" continuing through the line.

I hope you can find him a job between now and the time your new cushions arrive! Otherwise, he will see it as his job to do whatever it takes to get those "things" off his sofa!! Be afraid sofa cushions, be very afraid!!

Pretty sure Bull Mastiffs were jusr bred to snuggle, cuddle, whack you with their paw if they want to be petted (which is petty much all the time) and to drool!

Actually, if I recall, they were used as "guard dogs" way back...more so for their bulk than anything else because they are just too gentle and friendly to hurt anybody. They would just knock down their target and stand over them til help arrived....probably pawing them to whole time to be petted!
