My sweet 4 month old Aussie/border collie has radial nerve damage to his left front leg. I've had him in rehab/therapy since it happened last week but he has no deep pain response so our next step will probably be amputation. Can anyone point me in a direction to find out about future health issues related to this procedure? I'm being told that arthritis can be an issue. Does anyone find this to be the case? Does he have a better chance of adapting since he's a puppy? Any other special concerns? I've talked to a couple of vets that have differing opinions and would like to hear from people that have "been there, done that" so I can do what's best for my little guy. Any input is appreciated, thank you!

Hi Patch's Mom, welcome. I'm sorry to hear about the nerve damage. What caused it?

One week out is not a long time. Rehab vets have told us that folks should give this kind of situation at the very least six months before deciding to amputate and during that time, extensive rehab therapy. There are many, many instances when the feeling can come back and the limb can be used again. Are you working with a certified rehab vet?

Yes, as Tripawds age they are more susceptible to arthritis and joint problems. Again, from our convos with rehab vets this is what we've learned. How much mobility problems depends on how proactive you are with things like weight management, fitness regimens and monitoring activity to make sure they don't cause undue stress on their bodies. Our Tripawds e-books , Loving Life On Three Legs , addresses things like this. If you get to the point where amputation is definitely a possibility you might want to check it out.

Here's a young Aussie Tripawd named Domino, who lost his leg at a very young age. You'll find his story interesting and inspawrational!

hello,

Just a thought from my observations and some research Ive come upon during my journey. as previously mentioned yes, get working with a rehab vet and as well as maybe a brace to support the leg properly while hopefully potential healing. Orthopets from Colorado came highly recommended to me by multiple pets. Ive talked to them a couple of times to brainstorm even though I didnt end up needing to buy anything.

rehab vets can use high grade laser and other modalities to try to awaken the nerve or sometimes the local univeristies use trial experimental techniques such as stem cell injections and are alot easier on the pocket.. Worth a shot. before amputation decision.

good luck,
