Hi all, It's been close to a year and a half since I last visited this sight. I had a dog named Jake who was a tripawd that I adopted from the Farmington Animal Shelter in Farmington NM. I had to euthanize Jake due to his other back leg having extremely bad hip dysplasia. I didn’t have the finances nor physical ability to care for a dog who needed a wheelchair and another amputation. He was a wonderful dog and companion and though his life was way too short I am so glad I chose to adopt him, or perhaps he adopted me. I would adopt another small three legged dog in an instance.

Now for my current need. I am fostering what looks to be an eleven week Great Dane mix for the animal shelter. As soon as his bloodwork gets better he will have his back leg amputated. I hope you noticed he is a Great Dane mix. Obviously Lewis will be a lot larger than my Jake who was a Chihuahua mix, otherwise I would adopt him as well once the surgery is done. I have physical condition that makes my balance off and slowly I am losing strength in my peripheral muscles. I can no longer handle dogs larger than 20-30 pounds. It’s not safe for either of us long term.

I’d love Lewis to have a loving home before he has to return to the animal shelter long term. I know that chances are there is no one near Farmington, NM on this sight but I thought I’d still reach out as someone may know someone who might adopt him. I can already tell he’s got a winning personality and with a bit of training he will make any person or family a wonderful companion dog. Right now he is getting along as best as he can with a severe break in his thigh (I think) and close to his hip. As I said earlier his bloodwork is very poor and he is currently underweight so the veterinarian is waiting until he is healthier. He has his next veterinarian check up next week.

I have fostered for the animal shelter for close to the last four or five years and I think that, unlike what happened to Jake who was put up for adoption the day after his surgery the animal shelter might let me foster him for several weeks after his surgery.

If you can, please get the word out that he will be up for adoption as a tripawd. If anyone has information on places I can reach out to so he can be adopted after his surgery please let me know.

I’d appreciate any ideas as to how caring for a larger puppy whose leg is amputated I’d appreciate it. Although I don’t have a picture of him by himself yet I tried to include a photo of him and another foster pup (they are almost always close to one another as they have become foster buddies) named Fisher but I couldn't figure out how to do so. Nothing I tried worked

Thanks so much, Gloria Burkhart

Gloria, you are an amazing, wonderful human being, thank you for all you do to foster animals! Foster homes are in short supply everywhere but I imagine especially where you live, I've been to Farmington, there's not a lot of people there! So THANK YOU for all you did for Jake, and now for Lewis.

I'm sorry you had to let Jake go. What a great life you gave him while he was in his earth clothes. He was blessed to have been with you even for a short time. And now Lewis is too!

As for caring for Lewis after surgery, our Tripawds What to Expect articles can help you prepare, and our Tripawds Recovery Shopping List (not all items cost money, there are many things you can do with materials you already have around your house). If you have slippery floors, now is the time to put down no-slip rugs for traction . That will help him a lot.

We can help you get the word out when he is ready for adoption. Our Tripawds Rescue Forum is where you can list him for adoption, and we will help get the word out on social media to the Tripawds community. Many people are willing to drive to adopt a sweetie like Lewis, try not to worry, he will find that perfect home.

If you'd like to share photos, adding images works like this:

Basically you need to:

- upload a photo somewhere like your own Tripawds blog, or a public image hosting site like Imgur.com
- then copy the image URL (or just tap the image and copy it if you're on a mobile device)
- return here, and paste the image into your forum post.

Hope that makes sense. Let us know if you'd like help, we can post the photos if you'd like, just private message me.

Keep us posted on how he is doing. We are here to help!
