Hi all - In early July this year, our pup Duchess (Great Dane 107lbs) had her leg removed and I was on the forum seeking support and advice for about the first month!  I needed to take a break for a while...but just wanted to give a quick update.

We are now six months out from initial symptoms and five months or so post-op.  Duchess is doing very well.  Her mobility is mighty and she just did a mile walk with us - longest so far!  Some days she literally pulls us down the street.  We are still not sure how that is possible!

She did go through four rounds of carboplantin (sp?) chemo that started as soon as she could after surgery.  She tolerated them very well.  The last night she was up with a mild upset tummy.  We thought about taking her to the vet to get checked out as she'd been restless for hours.  When we tried to get her to go into the car, she said "nope," ran inside, upstairs and plunked herself on our bed and went to sleep.

Sometime in October (time flys!), she had a full xray and it showed no progression of the cancer so far.  So, for now, we are just enjoying having the time with our friend!

She has become much, much more vocal (understatement) and more attached to us.  Did anyone else experience this?  I know they says danes need lots of human attention.  We love it.  Image Enlarger

The magnificent Duchess, our Great Dane, brought us here.  Diagnosed early July, 2014, Duchess had her front, left amp a week later.  She handled her four rounds of carboplantin like a champ.  She earned her wings late January 2015.  A royal reincarnated into a wee-dane, she was bursting with personality and demands.  We miss her a lot and are very thankful for the time we had with her.  We welcomed a new rescue Dane into the family in March - Maverick! We're thankful he doesn't realize we'd meet all his demands if he put them out there.

She has basically taken over our bed...and has complete disregard for the system of blankets we had in place.  Oh well.

Wowwee! What a fun and SUPER DUPER great update! I hope you don't mind I moved your post here but this is a great place for folks with giant breed dogs to see that YES, their pups can have great lives on three legs. Dutchess is a perfect example.

That Christmas card is hilarious! Love it. She is soooo photogenic, seems like she really loves posing for photos.

As for the vocalizing...we've seen it happen with some Tripawds. After surgery they just crave a little more lovin. My theory is that because they had all sorts of lovin' during recuperation, once things got back to a "new normal" they really missed all that attention so why not keep asking for it? Just my crazy thoughts about that, but you never know.

Keep us posted, we are so glad to hear life is good. Hoppy Howlidays!

Quite frankly, she so much reminds me of Trouble.  The attitude, the class, the vocalizing, the living it her way - disregarding the blanket system!

Trouble was always a bossy dog with a mind of her own.  You could actually watch her decided whether or not she would do what you asked.  She was always looking at 'what's in it for me'.  And OMG, yes, was she ever vocal about it. She would start barking at me to cook dinner at 5PM every evening. And she would bark to let me know it was done.

Love Duchess - she's awesome!

Thanks for all of the replies!  Jerry - no problem on moving the thread.  Glad for it to be where it is the most helpful.  And for anyone who is trying to answer "how will my big dog handle it?"  - Duchess has handled it so, so well!  There were times it would have been easier if she was easy to pick up, but I think, in the end, that made her stronger quicly.  We worked hard to not be nervous around her and to give her space to progress in her time.  I still remember the first time she did stairs - we were shocked!  Giving her time to figure things out was probably harder for us than it was for her.  That is the wonderful thing about the dog's spirit - they just do.  They don't have the anxiety we can have sometimes.

We get such a kick out of her and her strong personality.  And just spoil her....except we can't give her as many cookies as she requests. Must watch the waistline.

Huga- yes it sounds like they have lots in common.  You are practically explaining our every day! And I do think she like the pictures.  I know the outfits are a little kooky, but she really does not seem to mind.  Put her in public, like a parade or around kids and she literally struts.

BCullom - it is a great name!

Jerry and Sally - I think you are on to something! We even slept on the floor on her bed with her when she was drugged up and waking up "hollering." But, we don't mind, we love it.

Happy holidays to everyone!

Love that your gorgeous big girl Duchess is doing so well. Great pics!

Deb and Angel Lexie* Diagnosed at age 13. Tried radiation first; wish we had amputated upon diagnosis (even with lung mets). Joined Club Tripawd April 2014 & Lexie loved life on 3 legs! Advice: Start physical therapy as soon as your vet clears it, especially hydrotherapy if available :-) See Lexie pics here.
