Just wondering if anybody else has had this problem.  My newfie Mocha had back leg amputation due to bone cancer 5 weeks ago.  For the first 4 weeks she was doing okay, getting up and walking or I should say hopping.  She was not thrilled about it but she would do it with some coaching.  But then she stopped trying to get up and instead will get from one place to another by dragging her bottom.  I have to admit, she's pretty good at doing that and can get from one place to another pretty quickly.  I don't know if she is getting lazy about trying to stand on 3 legs and finds this more convenient or if there's something else going on. We had her checked at the vet's office last week who couldn't find anything wrong with her leg.  Didn't do an x-ray though which I was hoping he would.  Has anyone else had this happen to them.  I thought we were doing well but then this setback came along.  I feel like it's one step forward, 2 steps back in regard to her recovery progress.  It's so frustrating.

Cheryl, I know you must be so frustrated from not knowing what's going on, I would be too. Did your vet say anything about how long to wait until you do further tests?

I saw your answer in your other post about her dragging, glad to hear you're providing the "tough love"! I know it's so hard!

Recovery can be hard as they adjust to their new life.  Newfies are pretty big, she may just think it is easier to get around without having to get all that mass up and moving.

You indicate you wish the vet had done an x-ray.  Just wanted to assure you it is ok to ask for what you want. Unless they have a logical reason to not do what you are asking, insist they do it or find a vet who will do what you think needs to be done.

So the vet took a series of x-rays and said Mocha's hips look great as does her back leg and her spine.  He is at a loss.  So we are now going to go to a neurologist.  The vet did say if she hurt her back that might be the cause of her lack of leg muscle.  So he's referring us to a neurologist which we will see on Monday.  Maybe it's a slipped disc or something.

First off, you are pawesome pawrents, and your vet is terrific for referring you to a neruologist. Gad to hear you're going (but of course sorry you have to). I hope that a clear diagnosis happens for you guys, please give our love to Mocha, we hope she starts to feel better soon.
