Hi everyone, I'm also very new to this. My 15 yr young Cocker Spaniel, became tripawd this past Monday. He's had a rough past nine weeks. Let me tell you about my Taffy. Taffy has an enlarged heart, his heart is almost the size of his body. About 7 yrs ago we notice a lump under his front rt armpit area, we took him to the vet, but because of his heart they didn't operate, over the years it's grown. About nine weeks ago it busted thru the skin, and the vet said it had to be operated on or gangrene would set in, the cost to euthanize would be the same as the surgery, so we decided to turn it over to a higher power, and take the 50/50, the vet did not expect him to survive, but he did. The first week was trying to say the least, first his lung filled, but they managed to clear it, then his eye filled with fluid, so back under he went to have antibiotics put into his eye, and 3rd eyelid shut down, now the 10 days waiting period, only to find out the eye had to be removed, well we've come this far, back under again. Each time knowing that his chances of survival are getting slimmer, because of his age, but more so his BIG heart, and once again he survived. He was so happy, and we knew then that there had to have been a lot of pain behind the eye. He was running, and barking just like a puppy again, but then the tumor area wasn't healing, and we came to find out the tumor was growing back, but growing rapidly this time. It was growing externally, but more so internally, and attached itself to the shoulder blade. So once again, we've come this far, what do we do? Let's do it, let's do the amputation, we're going for the 50/50 again, if God wants him then at least we tried, and once again my little Taffy with his great BIG heart survived. So here we are, he had the surgery this past Monday, and they sent him home with morphine oral injectables, antibiotics, and gave us some insight on what to do. Taffy also has tramadol for anxiety, and lasix for his heart, so he urinates a lot. The first night he was so out of it, and peeing all over himself, and we just kept cleaning floors, and him, around 3 a.m. yesterday morning he was whining a lot so gave him more morphine, to take him to 9-11 a.m. but he never whined no more so we decided to hold off on the morphine, and only give it if he showed signs of pain. He did wonderful yesterday, he was already walking, my daughter made him diapers (we also have a wheelchair peke, so she's had experience in diapers) he eventually didn't want them, and wanted to pee outside, which was fine, she also made him a harness, but he wasn't interested in this either, he was doing great. We gave him some morphine around 8p.m. last night to keep him comfy thru the night, but I didn't want him on it thru the day, because it really knocks him down, so called the vet this morning to see if I could do the tramadol (only give him half the dose) during the day, and the morphine at night, she said this would be fine. He's a bit slower today, he's been outside to pee, but hasn't pooped yet, and I'm wondering if this could be also slowing him down. His appetite is great, he's taking his meds, and drinking lots of water. Can't wait till this is over, and he's back to barking, and being happy. I'm so glad for this forum, in case I run into any problems I will have some where to turn to. Thanks for being there for all of us.We need some doggie smiley faces, lol. Bless you all, and look forward to hearing from you.superstar

Aww thank you so much. I have a question, and have been searching, but haven't found any posts. I don't know what this would come under either, but here goes. My taffy is passing gas, he's eating just fine, but hasn't had a bowel movement, as I said this is only day #2 but his tummy area looks bloated, might be because of the surgery area also, but how long after surgery do they have a bowel movement? I'm just so worried, thanks anyone who can advise me.

Some dogs don't go for days after surgery, and pain meds can cause constipation. What's he on? As Jerry's vet told us, "when they need to go, they'll go."

If you have any concerns about bloating, please contact your vet immediately. But if Taffy is passing gas, it is not likely to be bloat. Post op swelling and seromas are common. If the area is squishy, or feels like a pocket of fluid, it is likely a seroma .

What a trooper Taffy is.  Wow.  That's a lot for one guy to go through.  He must have one heck of a will to live!  Before you know it he will be back to his old self.  Those first weeks are pretty rough though and seem like forever.  Taffy is just going to need lots of rest so his body can heal.

As far as going to the bathroom part -- there have been some dogs that have taken close to a week to go #2!  I agree with Admin that the meds can cause constipation.  He might be a little gaseous if he is eating something other than his normal food?  That happens to my Daisy when she eats non-regular stuff.

Good luck and keep us updated on Taffy's progress.

Thanks administration, he's on Tramadol 50mgs, but I only give him half of a pill, so he got 25mgs, at 8a.m., and another at noon, he can have 50mgs every 6 hrs, but he's been on pain meds for some time, and he doesn't do well with the high doses, it's just enough to take the edge off, but not leave him immobilized. I want him to have range of motion during the day, so his muscles don't lock up, he's also on 3/4 cc of morphine for evening so he rests comfortably during the night, and then he has Novax 75mgs, this is an anti-inflammatory, and then Amoxicillin for infection, plus his heart meds. Thanks again.

Thanks Marla, and Daisy, he's been eating chicken, boiled, mostly chicken, and today he had some rice with it. I might incorporate some veggies. Thank God he's urinating though. I'm so happy to have come across this sight, bless you all, and all the tripawds every where. smiley

oKelly! I'm reading this with my muth gapping open! What an incredible journey you and your preciius Taffy are on!!

Taffy is a miracle dog! What a strong, brave pup! Whatever happens, goodness k ows you've given him every chance possible! Taffy knows he's a very loved boy!

As far as the pooping, yes, as mentined in other posts the drugs can definitely cause cnstiatin. Passing gas sounds like everything is working! But yeah, double check with the vet in the a.m. though just to be sure....and to check out the tummy swelling.

Taffy is very, very, very early in recovery. I'm sure the vet told you to keep his pain meds. steady and not let the pain get too faar ahead.

we are nere for you and Taffy. Thi first week or so can be rough..-.especiwly with everything he has to deal with! Sleep when Taffy sleeps. Hwve Taffy taa,e it real slow----just out to pee and poop........hopefuly poop soon!

We're keeping all paws crossed over here for you! When recovery takes place, yo will see your pup be Taffy again!! Fifteen? WOW! You rock Taffy..-...and keep rocking:-) :-)

Hang in there! We are just a computer type away;!

Surrou ding you with support and healing energy for Taffy!

Thank you so much Sally, and Happy Hannah, Taffy is truly an amazing dog, he has everyone at the clinic in awe, each time he survives another round, and I know he's not ready to leave me, and I'm really ok with that. I keep his vet informed on the meds, as the first pain med he was ever on was valium, and really looped him, he had 4 paws at the time, but he was literally climbing the walls, and the fence in our yard, which really scared me, and then I realized it was scaring him, and I just never wanted him to feel that way again, so like I said, I give him enough to  take away the pain, but not enough to put him through a loop. He's just had his morphine so we will be buckling down for the night. I was really happy to have him come in and wake me this morning to let me know he needed to potty. He's doing remarkably well, I don't think I could be as strong as this little fella, and just makes me so happy to have him in my life. Bless you all, and will post updates, and I'm sure I will be asking more questions, Thank you so much!

Morning Sally, and Happy Hannah, Yea I have been sleeping on the couch (bedrooms are upstairs) so he normally wakes me to go outside in the morning, but I didn't expect it 2nd morning post op. This morning, I woke up first, but he had his tail wagging as soon as he saw me get up, and we went right outside then back in for his morning meds, and a bit of breakfast for him, he's now laying down getting some rest. He is such an amazing little fella. They say cats have nine lives, but I think he has some cat in him somewhere, lol.. He's at least giving them a run for his money, hehe.. Well he just wanted to go outside, he didn't do anything, just hopped around the yard, and then smacked his chin, wow think it sounds worse then it is, that's # 3 smack down, I just rub the bottom of his mouth, and continue in, even though it upsets me, I don't want him thinking that, then give him lots of pets, and kisses, he's deaf, and only hears high pitched noises, so I can't even tell him he's such a good boy, but he must know. Bless you, and will post later.

And aother round of applause!! Wait.......TWO rounds!!........one for the miracle dog (part cat) and one for MOM!!¡ CLAPPING CLAPPING! CHEERING!!

Taffy is one incredible animal being and you are one incredible human being!! You are doing a wonderful job of staying positive and happily enthusiastic for your Taffy...and that is soooo important!

I'm so pleased to get his update. We all worry aout each other ya' kow......it's a tripawd famiy thing!

Yeag, chin crashes are common, at first anyway! You handle it beautifully by the way! doubthe would let you use a "sling towel" if the face plants get too frequent.....he sounds waaaaaay to independent and proud for that.

I'm ZERO------minus zero help when it comes to posting photos....but if you can.....and there are tons of "how to" links on nere.....would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE photos of Taffy!

You hang in there kiddo........got a few more ups and downs to get through before the ups re there consistently!

Hi Sally, and Happy Hannah, and Jerry, and everyone, and all Tripawds out there. I to, am not good with posting pictures, but will see if my daughter can post some as soon as she gets a chance. We've had a good day thus far, I spent most of the day cleaning, and taking Taffy out for potty time, still no # 2. and I might say the gas is really bad, I can only imagine it will be a pleasure once it releases itself, my poor baby. He's still doing great though, So the couple of places he took a nose dive on, I've noticed that when he gets to those spots, he rests (just stops) and then he maneuvers himself over. We have a sidewalk cutting through our back yard to the driveway, and there's about an inch lip on a couple of spots, and his managed it, and then another maybe inch lip coming into the kitchen doorway, so like I said the couple of nose dives, were a learning lesson for him, and he now watches, but I'm sure there are more things he will endeavor. My daughter had made him a sling which I will also have her take a picture of, the vets office loved it, it wraps under his tummy, and then has a leash like handle on both sides, but he's not really interested, just wants to do what he can on his own, as long as he sees me in front of him, he's fine. He had some leakage of goo coming out of his drain today, but my wonderful daughter cleaned it all for him. I have lots of medical illnesses myself, and it's hard for me to get up, and down off the floor, so she takes care of wound cleaning, and all, she actually took care of my wounds from a cancer operation too, so she's quite wonderful. When my daughter posts some pics, I will ask her to post one of Taffys little brother Ludo (aka Louie) also, he is a paralyzed peke, and uses a wheelchair , but much prefers to drag his lower body. We mostly use the wheelchair for outside so he doesn't rip the skin. Well think I will give Taffy his p.m. meds, and some food, and then around 9p.m he will get his morphine for the night. Hope everything is good with everyone, and their beautiful tripawds, these animals are so wonderful. God bless and for those who don't believe in God, just sending blessings! Talk soon! Kelly, you and Taffy really put a smile on my face, you have such a great attitude! Taffy's recovery sounds fairly typical. He'll go potty eventually, just wait. Have you tried adding any bran flakes or metamucil, or steamed pumpkin to his food? That really helps. Worst case your vet can give you a stool softener for him.

We can't wait to see pics, here's a post about adding images that should help your daughter if she has trouble posting.

Oh, and as long as the goo leakage wasn't smelly or discolored (other than a very light watery blood-color), it's probably OK. Just let your vet know OK?

You sound very observant about how he's doing and what his challenges might and might not be. What a great pack mom you are.

Good luck tomorrow, keep us posted!
