What a trooper!! We went to the vet's yesterday to find out why Shilo wasn't eating and was soooo nauseated. Luckily we had a few hours to bawl our eyes out before taking the 1 hour trip back to pick her up yesterday afternoon. They preformed a x-ray and ultrasound to see the potential reasons that she was feeling so poorly. For those who find themselves in similar situations I am sharing our story.

Shilo was doing great, running, playing ball, and chasing the light. As you know I found a couple lumps last week and we were going to have her oncologist take a look at her next visit. By Friday she started exhibiting strange behavior. She was restless and had gotten sick. Not like the normal sick but more like spitting up clear mucous. We took her temp which was normal and so took her in the following day. Her local vet checked the lumps which came back positive for cancer. They could not figure out why she got sick all her blood work came back great. She ate that day and kept everything down and I figured ok fluke, she just had a bad day. Sunday she wouldn't eat until dinner and had some chicken breast but, threw up over half of what she ate later that nite. This was the last time she ate.. smiley6

So yesterday we had the tests done and found that her cancer has spread through out her body. Although the last x-ray showed her lungs clear 3 weeks ago, she not has 3 visible mets. She also has mets in her kidneys (both left and right) and her other abdominal structures. sf-cry This really makes me wonder if some of the things that happened strangely in the past 2 months was due to some of these mets. The vet believes the mets started in her abdomen where there is a fairly large tumor. We had blood work done and amazingly all her functions were normal (ie kidney's and liver).

So we are now buying precious time. Last night was a little rough with her fever but we are addressing that with the rimadyl and tylenol. She is on 2 anti nausea meds and a appitite inducer. She ate a small piece of cheese today!! She still is fighting and has lots of spark. She is still into wanting to know where everyone is and she is having family come and visit her. Her sister Shadow will be here later this afternoon. Her best human friends are coming by today and tomorrow. Later she will get to go for her favorite drive. I wanted to take her to the coast but the weather is not cooperating so maybe a visit to our local park will do.

As long as she is comfortable and fighting we will be there for her. We are also watching for that sign that she is done, and when she is we are as prepared as one can be. She snuggled with me last night on the bed with her head across my legs like she did when she was a puppy. She is still mobile and going outside to potty.

I want to say that I bragged about this place to the vet while I was there. They are looking to give this information to those facing similar situations and giving a place for support. It has been a life line for me, I have been able to be strong. So thank you all for the support.

We will be spending the next few days taking lots of pictures and loving her each minute of the day.

Shilo & Alisa

PS for those who are contemplating this walk, Shilo has been told she is not of the norm. They will be using her story as a teaching tool for future research. Needless to say we have NO REGRETS!! We got 8 weeks(and are still counting) so far on quality, painfree time. I would do it all again making the same decisions we have made.

Shilo diagnosed with osteosarcoma 9/4/2009, amputation 9/9/2009. ShiloAnne lost her battle 11/23/2009 where she regained her fourth leg and is patiently waiting for her parents to join her. We will always love you baby girl.

I know that life isn't fair, but it's hard to be reminded of it.  I feel so bad for you right now.  I hope that you get time to make lots of memories and have lots of happy moments, and while we're at it, a miracle would be nice.

I'll be thinking of you and Shilo.

Shilo and Alisa,

I just read this post, after already posting to your other message and blog. I'm so sorry to hear about Shilo's cancer spreading.Crying I hope that Shilo hangs in there for as long as possible... Be sure to take tons of pictures, videos... love, squeeze and spoil her as much as you can!

We took pictures of Jake every single day... and tried to enjoy every single minute we had left with him... but in the end... it was not enough. It's never enough.

I've read of a few other dogs on here that also had their cancer spread, but they still managed to hang in there for quite a while longer. I really hope and pray this is the case with Shilo too!!!

Please keep us updated... You and Shilo are in my thoughts and prayers!!!!

Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!

Bless you for taking such good care of Shilo and for sharing her heroic story here for others. If you would like some Tripawds cards to give your vet, just send us a PM with your address. There are also posters and calendars in Jerry's Café Press store which make great gifts for veterinary offices.

Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and Shilo now.

Shilo & Alisa,

I know that I will not be able to find the words to express how sorry we are at your diagnosis.  While life may have delt you an incredibly terrible hand, your attitude and approach are outstanding!  Shilo is a fighter and that is because of the very special relationship that you share.  It is our sincere hope that you will be able to stockpile an incredible amount of memories within this "borrowed" time.  Please know that all our thoughs and prayers will be with you as you create these memories.

Once more through a curtain of tears,

Alisa & Shilo,

I was so sorry to read your post.  I have been following your posts and was so hoping that your appt. would have a different outcome.  Shilo continues to be in my prayers as do you.  It is so hard to let go and I know that you will do whatever you can for Shilo, and when you can't do anything else you will let her go.  Unfortunately I know just how hard it is but when the time comes letting them go is the final thing we can do for them.  I am so so sorry that you are facing this.

Alisa:

I'm so sorry about the diagnosis, but you are being remarkably strong, and Shilo will know that.  Tika went through the vomiting (sometimes clear like you have), no food, pacing, whining thing in September and we thought....oh god, this is it.  She had been at that time confirmed with lung mets for almost 4 months.

Once we got the nausea under control she made a spectacular rebound and she is still hanging around.  Not to say things are perfect now, there's no realistic way they could be, but it's been two months from when we thought, it's time to now.

So, I hope, hope, hope Shilo will get that same rebound and be with you for a bit longer.  Having mets on the other organs is not so cool, but hopefully Shilo can handle that for awhile longer.

I love how you say she's your hero, I say the same thing about Tika. If I ever get seriously ill, I hope I will have the grace and strength Tika had to handle it, she taught me to live day by day and that will ALWAYS be with me.

Our pups have taught us so many valuable life lessons, and that will always be their legacy, and they will always be with us because of that.

Take care,  Kim and Tika

Definitely not fair. Yesterday we thought Tazzie would lead the way down the uncharted subQ path for Shilo, but now everything is turned upside down. Shilo is so young and sweet, definitely not fair. (But for some reason, I had her pegged as a lab cross, not a rottie as today's pics definitely reveal.)

Tika's tips mean a lot. She will be your new guardian angel (or guardian earthling since you are both firmly planted on earth these days). In fact, she is the guardian earthling for many of our dogs.

So I figured it out!!! These dogs are talking to each other or something.. Either that or Shilo didn't hear what that vet said about her!! She has been great!!

I can't believe how great it was to see her eat!! Of course she won't eat to much from me because I am the evil pill giver. We aren't hiding those pills in any food because I don't want to give her any reason to get food aversion.

Talk about a turn around after a rough patch Sunday - Wednesday night. I actually was worried we were going to have to make that tough decision yesterday morning but by afternoon I had my girl back. So we are taking what we can, however we can. Of coarse she is seeing a few pink elephants with that rimadyl but her fever is gone!! She definately feels better. No nausea at all! I don't know how long it will last but, we are just living each moment to its fullest. We will have a fun filled weekend and keep that positive air flowing.

Thank you all for your support and loving words, it means the world to me. I am so glad that Shilo means as much to all of you as she does to us.

Shilo says:

Thank you my guardian angel Tika, big bro Tazzie man, and Codie Rae's candle. I am eating roast and cookies and crackers!! I even went to visit the local vet so Mom could get those nasty pills, but man I love my vet. I even got a cookie from her and I don't usually take food from anyone. I have been greeting everyone at the door, and checking on my family like I use to!! Just loving life right now, taking lessons from Tika, U rock girl!!smiley4

YAY Shilo - so happy to hear your news!!!! Rasberry Rasberry Rasberry Rasberry Rasberry

This seems to be the week of the Rotties. I heard about a big, 130 lb, Rottie living here who was just diagnosed. She thinks the dog is too big for surgery, so I told her about some of our friends (Tazzie 1, Oslo, Cemil, Nova). Ooh, so hard to start that journey, isn't it? Hopefully she will come get some tips from the gang.

The weekend is here Shilo - PlayTime!

Whooooo Hooooo!  Go Shilo!  We are so glad you are not feeling so icky anymore. Nova hates getting pills too, but for us, the only way I can get them down is to put them in a couple of tablespoons of delicious canned food (when she had a bad appetite I had to resort to stuff like rabbit and tripe), and then top it with her regular food. I have found this to be much, much easier than shoving them down her throat and finding them stashed away in her jowls or spit out on the floor.

We hope you have a PAWESOME weekend!
