Last Wednesday we awoke at 1am to the most horrific screaming and hissing I've ever heard. At first I thought that my cat and kitten were fighting, but when I sat up I realized something else was wrong. My older cat Gypsie was puffed up at the end of the bed and Misu had her front claws dug into the box spring and was hissing and screaming. I quickly flipped on the light and ordered my partner to put our newborn in the swing out in the living room and put Gypsie out in the hallway. Upon further inspection it was evident that Misu had gotten inside the box spring and had gotten her back leg trapped in a spring. I tried wrapping her in a blanket and lifting her up so she could pull free but I was unsuccessful and she began thrashing more. I was in a panic and didn't know what to do so I called 911 to see if they could send a firefighter with bolt cutters or something to free her. While we were waiting I flipped the mattress off the bed and cut the top of the box spring open to get a better visual on her leg. Her foot was trapped under a spring and she had fallen over the top of it. It was evident her foot was badly broken, but there was no easy way I could free her without risking severe injury to myself from her extreme distress. Luckily I remembered a jeweler's saw in my tool box and ran to get it. I began sawing through the springs and by the time I was almost through the second one, she managed to pull free and she bolted to the corner dragging her leg with a long forgotten empty Ben & Jerry's ice cream container in her mouth... She must've bitten down on it to control her pain. She had been trapped for over 20 minutes. I put the pet carrier in front of her and she willingly went inside hissing a couple times in pain. Before heading to the emergency pet hospital, we took the box spring and threw it out into the yard so our other cat wouldn't get injured by it.
I brought her into the first pet hospital and they were running way behind. I was able to get them to administer a pain med and sedative to make her more comfortable before I drove across town to the other location... Luckily I had funds on my care credit to do this for her.
At the other location they wouldn't even touch her without prepayment and we wouldn't have funds til late morning from my partner's student loans so they sent me home to wait for our usual clinic to open which was around the time her meds were starting to wear off. Luckily our regular clinic took her in and medicated her and did the exam but wouldn't do x-rays until our funds were available. Once funds were available they did the initial x-rays and it looked like all four metacarpals were broken but they were clean breaks and being she was so young the surgeon said that splinting would be the best approach.... But they weren't able to clearly get all views and asked to sedate her for further x-rays and we agreed. After those came back it turned out a chunk of her ankle was broken out and the joint was badly damaged and the tendons and ligaments were torn up as well. The surgeon was not confident that it could be repaired. We were then faced with the decision to amputate or proceed with an iffy surgical procedure with an 8-10 week recovery time that could still result in amputation. We went ahead with the amputation.

We are now a week out from the amputation and she has been doing well. The first couple days we had to hold her upright in the litter box because she would be so fatigued just from moving around and climbing in. She's now going in on her own. We have to feed her and give her water by hand but her appetite is good. She's still super affectionate and the last couple days she started laying on her incision side and just a few minutes ago she rolled over as far as she could for a belly scratch.

Welcome to Tripawds, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

What a scary accident! I'm glad that you were able to get her extricated and to a vet. Way to stay cool under pressure!

She sounds like she is doing quite well now.  Being so young I would bet that once she is all healed up and gains some strength she won't remember what being 4 legged was like.

Oh my goodness, what a horrible accident! I'm so glad you were able to get her out of there and off to the vet so quickly. Hooray for rolling over and requesting belly rubs (never thought I'd say that about a kitten on here hehe). Our kitty population is growing very quickly on here, I'm sure some of them will chime in soon!

Thank you so much. I found tripawds while I was searching for information on how long pets need medication after amputation and how to help her cope with phantom limb pain should the issue arise. I also started Misu's blog... I've never blogged before so hopefully I have the gist of it.

Hello and welcome to you and Misu!

My Jill is a kitty and she is now 21 months post amputation (right hind leg).  She was 7 when her leg was amputated and just turned 10 and she does TERRIFIC on three legs.  The best advice I can give was given to me by her oncologist, which is to put her on some type of glucosamine chondroitin supplement to keep her other legs healthy!  I had Jill on Dasuquin for a while and she loved it (http://www.1800.....AvIQ8P8HAQ) but she's pretty picky and got sick of it after a while.

Now she takes these treats - http://www.petn.....38;p=70065

Good luck to you and Misu, she'll be running around in NO time!! and please visit jill's blog if you get a chance, I have tons of videos of her recovery and you can see all the progress she made as time went on!

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Hello again,

I made a live link for Misu's blog so members can get there easily.  I just read through it- good start!

You might consider making a signature block and add a link to Misu's blog there.  You can see I have two links to Maggie's blog in my signature. You start by clicking on the button that says 'Profile' and then the tab that says signature. If you can't figure out how to do it Jerry should be able to help you.

I hope her recovery continues smoothly.

Welcome to Tripawds! My Steve is a right rear amp kitty due to an injury from an unknown cause. Her injury actually sounds kind of like a healed version of Misu's!

Thanks to your quick thinking and actions, you really saved Misu!! If she had stayed stuck, who knows what could have happened?

Steve and I are headed over to read Misu's blog right now! Remember, us tri-kitty owners are here to answer all of your questions!!

Right rear leg amp due to injury from unknown cause (but don't tell her she's missing her spare...yes HER!)

WOW!  How intense!!  I can't imagine being awoken by that in the middle of the night.  How scary for everyone :(  I'm glad to hear Misu is recovering fairly well :)  Sounds like she is getting lots of love and care!!  My 14 year old Kender had her left rear leg amputated on 7/31 and is doing well so far.  I'm sure being so young and healthy, that Misu will bounce back even better   :)  I look forward to hearing about her progress!

Definitely not a fun thing to wake up to. I was amazed that it didn't freak out my 3 1/2 month old who shares the bed with us. She just stared at us with big eyes. Dad brought her out to the livingroom and put her in the swing and she was right back out. My 2 1/2 year old was asleep in her bedroom across the hall and she didn't wake up either! I'm a little worried about how Misu and Gypsie will get along after this... I really have no clue what actually happened or if Misu lashed out at Gypsie in pain. We took a long time to ease Misu into our home because we had tried adopting previously and that cat and Gypsie did not get along. I hope they will be ok, they were good buds before this mess happened.

Hi Tiffany and Misu,

How scary! You responded like a paramedic - calmness under pressure.

Mona, my tri-kitty, had her amputation in June. Before the amputation my make cat, Eli wanted to cuddle with Mona but she always hit him on his head.  When Mona came home the day after the surgery, my other cat Eli was very curious.  So after the amputation when I let Eli in the nursery he would just stand guard about 2 feet away from her. He's always been protective of her. Now things are back to normal - Mona sits back on her hind legs and bonks Eli on the head.

I'm sure Gypsie and Misu will go back to being good buddies again.

Misu's figured out how to get her cone over the food dish so she can eat to her heart's content. She's also getting around pretty well now. She struggles to get up on our mattress but hops off no problem. We are waitin a while to get a new bed base until she's able to jump on things again.... Not fun for my bad knees, but I want her to still feel welcome to come in our bed to snuggle.
