Greetings.  I stumbled across this site today when looking for information on holistic supplements that might help my soon-to-be 9-year old Berner's remaining 3 limbs.

Quick back-story: Gus was diagnosed with histiocytic sarcoma in September of 2011.  He developed a massive tumor on his back left leg seemingly overnight.  We were given two options - make him as comfortable as possible for his remaining 4-6 weeks or amputate and give him a 'fighting chance.'  Obviously, we opted for the latter.  We also did CCNU (chemo) for about 6-months but discontinued.  Until just recently, we were giving him a variety of anti-inflammatories, but his blood tests suggested that these were starting to take a toll on his liver/kidneys, so we stopped.

He's starting to struggle a bit with his remaining back leg.  Not to the point where he can't walk but enough for us to notice. I'm starting supplements of glucosamine/condroitin/msm but are there any other holistic supplements we can give him with anti-inflammatory properties?   Any products similar to compression wraps that people might were for added support?  Obviously, our first 'order of business' before his surgery was to get a Ruffwear harness so we've got that covered.

Finally, other than a very brief feeling of 'oh my God, what have we done to him?!' when I picked Gus up post-surgery, we've had no regrets.  In all likelihood, we bought him meaningful time - 18 months and counting.  In that time, he's had countless walks, trips to the park, family vacations, etc.  There are some challenges.  I help him in and out of our car, up  stairs, etc., but he's the same dog as he was before his surgery, just a little older and slower!  I would encourage anyone that is faced with this decision, provided they have the financial means and their dog's other limbs are healthy, to consider it.  We've had zero regrets and have cherished each and every "bonus day" we bought him.

Welcome and thanks for joining! Your future posts will not require moderation.

The new Tripawds e-book Loving Life On Three Legs should be very helpful in helping with Gus' rear leg weakness. How much and what type of exercise is he currently getting? The book includes chapters about pain management and supplements, but be sure to check the Tripawds Nutrition blog for for more suggestions about supplements too.

Welcome to Gus and parents!

I have given Shooter Cosequin since he became a tripawd. There are quite a few dogs on here that get Adequan shots also and that is a great treatment. I haven't done it for my dogs, but I know how well it works on horses. A little pricey, but not much more than all the supplements we often seem to give our animals. Have you checked into the possibility of a cart for Gus? Just a thought since he's a larger dog and those seem to help a lot.

Glad you found the site and hope to see some pics of Gus soon!!

Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.

Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.

Thanks!  I'm going to call my vet inquire about Adequan and also check and see how Cosequin is processed to see if Gus is a candidate.

Thanks so much for joining us! We're glad to hear he's done so well. Did you catch this story about Barney B from Texas? He is a FIVE YEAR histio survivor! I hope it inspires you!

When it comes to Gus' leg shaking, can you pinpoint when it happens? Is it right after play or walking? Is it constant? Morning? Night? All the time? Documenting his symptoms will help your vet narrow down the diagnostic procedures that might need to be done.

Another thing to consider is his weight. Bernese pups are really large anyways, is he by any chance overweight? Even one pound can add a lot of stress to a Tripawd's frame. Just something to consider.

We strongly encourage you to check our Gear blog and new book, Loving Life on Three Legs, for some exercise tips that can help Gus get strong.

There is also some info about Adequan in our Nutrition blog as well as if you search the Forums for member's experiences.

Good luck! Please keep us posted, we're glad you found us.

Thank you one and all for your words of encouragement.  As I mentioned in a response to another poster, I wish I'd found this site back in September of 2011.  My wife and I sort of "flew blind" and the information here is fantastic.

A little more about Gus...

Prior to surgery, he was around 115 and was lean by Berner standards.  Now, he's around 90 lbs without an ounce of fat on him.  He's had a litany of orthopedic issues including elbow displasia, OCD, and cervical stenosis so we've always kept a close eye on his weight.  Yes, we got ourselves a lemon!  Anyway, as he will be 9 in just a few days, he's already exceeded the life expectancy for the breed.  That isn't to say we wouldn't love to have him for another few years, but we don't get too far ahead of ourselves and look towards monthly milestones.  Honestly, as devastated as we'll be, the last 18 months have been a gift considering the grim prognosis with or without the amputation.  HS is a sinister disease and all too common for Bernese Mountain Dogs.

After we took him off Previcox (anti-inflammatory), we noticed an immediate difference.  He struggles a bit getting up, particularly after he's been laying down for an extended period of time.  He can do it, but you can see that his hind leg is bothering him a bit.  He's also refusing to go up stairs and will instead bark until someone comes outside to help him up to our back deck whereas before he'd climb them without assistance.  Once he's up, his leg appears to grow stronger, but our walks have grown shorter with more frequent rest breaks.  I usually walk him once a day for about 10 minutes whereas before it was closer to 20.  It was never a "brisk" walk though.  I let him dictate the pace and keep close watch for signs that he's tired.  We used to take him to the dog park once a week, but we've scaled that back because it would wipe him out.

His regular vet thinks it's just age and arthritis and I concur.  The tricky part is finding him some relief but not at the expense of his liver and kidneys.  Right now, we're giving him Gabapentin for pain, although he doesn't whimper or howl and it doesn't seem to help all that much.  Like I said, there was a pronounced change after discontinuing the Previcox.  Now I'm trying to find something else that has anti-inflammatory properties that's easier on his liver/kidneys.

You are very conscientious and doing everything right for Gus. I too would have to agree that it sounds like age and arthritis and life on three legs taking its toll, so I would highly recommend checking out the Adequan shots. They aren't cheap but they've made a profound difference in many dogs' lives. Let us know what your vet says about their interaction with liver/kidneys, I'm curious to know about that.

Gus sounds like a real sweetie. Give him a big hug from us and post some pics when you have time.

Welcome to Tripawds.

My quad-pug Tani sounds a bit like Gus- she has so many maladies I can't remember them all!  She is almost 13 now and has lived longer than several vets thought she would.

One of my main concerns with her now is arthritis- she has it in her back and all four legs. We have slowly ramped up the supplements and meds to keep her comfortable.  She was diagnosed at 6 years old with arthritis. We started her on Adequan in December- it was pretty much the last thing we could add to the mix of treatments and meds. What a HUGE difference! We did the loading phase in December of two shots a week for 4 weeks, then we went to monthly shots.  I now give her a shot every other week and she is doing well.  I was starting to question her quality of life before we tried adequan, it has given us more time together.  Maybe it would give Gus some relief.

We also do chiropractic treatments and she takes rimadly, gabapentin, dasaquin and fish oil to help with pain/inflammation.

Wow Gus, you certainly ave experienced a lot of challenges on your earthly journey!

Out parents are so proud and certainly have an awareness of all the issues you are dealing with. Assuming everything else has been ruled out, it mimics the aging process a lot of my seniors have faced. I'm pretty sure Previcox is the same family as Meloxicam so probably ould'nt help.

It's lovely that Gus knows you are there to help him 'up the stairs, getting up, etc. It has o be reassuring to him to KNOW he can trust you to always b there for him:-)
Gus isn't a lemon, he's an INSPIRATION AND A HERO:-) :-)

I was ever offered adequan as an option at the time, but I would definitely push for it if the need arises!

You are doing such an extraordinary job I caring for Gus and I how that will lwys bring comfort to you! ALWAYS!

Look forward to hearing about Gus as he continues to improve, Sally and Happy Hanah

Just spoke to the vet.  Apparently, Adequan doesn't cause any undue stress to the liver and kidneys.  We're going to begin a treatment next week.  I'll keep the board posted (in the correct forum) on how it goes. Thanks

Welcome!  Gus is adorable!  And so senior!  Good for you guys.

I've read wonderful things about Adequan.  Good luck with it!  Also consider acupuncture.  Water therapy?  Massage?  If he has a hard time getting up on a slippery floor, how about a bootie back there to give him some extra grip?  Is he wearing his harness always, so you can help him up from a resting position?  Are all anti-inflammatories going to impact his liver and kidneys?  Could you try another kind?  What about a supplement specifically for the liver and kidneys?  A tried and true and beloved supplement for the liver is Milk Thistle.  There are many folks here who use it (it's beloved in humans, too).  Maybe being on Milk Thistle for a bit, plus Adequan will heal his liver enough to go back on another, more gentle anti-inflammatory?  A place I like to research supplements and holistic treatments is Only Natural Pet.  There, you can read articles and see products per condition - in your case, mobility and/or liver and kidney support.  See what strikes your fancy!  If you like, come back to tripawds.com, go to their Nutrition section, and click on the Only Natural Pet store link from there.  Going to ONP from inside Tripawds.com gives a kickback!  Score one for this team!

Good luck.  Keep us posted with you handsome man.

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love.
