Hello everyone!  My name is Curtis and I am new to the Tripawds community.  I stumbled on this community looking for resources as my Tripawd maneuvers her senior years.  I am looking forward to the opportunity to not only learn, but to hopefully share my experience with others who have the same concerns as myself.  Over the next few days I will do an information dump with all the details of her past, present, and future for anyone interested.

We adopted Georgia in December of 2012 after the passing of my first dog Gia.  I love black dogs and I was looking for another one.  We stumbled on Georgia's online profile and made the inquiry.  She had been at the shelter for about a year and a half.  She experienced some sort of "extreme trauma" when she was a puppy and was not properly cared for.  She was dumped at the shelter with the appendage wrapped in duct tape.  The whole limb had to be amputated immediately. Her recovery went smoothly according to the shelter and she got along with the other dogs.  They named her Georgia because they said she looked like George Washington.  This made no sense to us, but knowing the details we decided to go get her.

We took our other dog Caswell and made the two hour drive to pick her up.  The dogs got along great and we took her home that day.  We were actually able to celebrate the New Year with her and all of our friends.

We had absolutely no idea what we were getting into adopting a Tripawd, but we were determined to give her the best life.

Thank you for taking the time to listen.

I have started a blog at https://yourcdw.....ipawds.com.  I have a few pictures posted there of my princess.

I will keep you all posted on the things that we have done and things we plan on doing in the future.

Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I love black dogs too!  4 of my last 5 dogs have been all black, my current Tripawd is a Pug mix who is piebald so white and black.

Georgia is very interesting looking! Do you know her mix?  I see Chow in some of your pictures- but I'm pretty bad at the 'guess the breeds' game!

It's always great to have someone with long term experience join our family.  My first Tripawd Maggie had her amp about 3 years before I found this site- like you I was researching how to help an aging Tripawd.

Who would have thought there would be thousands of us Tripawd parents looking for help, support or just to share our stories!

I'm looking forward to learning more about your girl and your journey so far.

Look at that beautiful grey muzzle!

What an incredible backstory to how Georgia found her forever  home.  She clearly  now knows what love feels like and what it means to live life to the fullest with joy and happiness ♥️. So looking forward to all the adventures  of Georgia, past, present and future.

She's so beautiful.  Love the frosty mug.  I also adopted a black doggy several years ago.  She just passed this year, but only after her muzzle turned grey as did her eyebrows and eyelashes. I think when dogs get to live long enough to turn grey, yhst means they are very well loved dogs

I'm sure Gia helped guide you to Georgia and is watching over you♥️

Hugs

Hey Karen!

Georgia definitely has some chow in her.  We think some sort of lab/chow mix due to her size and her energy level.

I can't even begin to describe how happy I am having found this group.  I wish I had sought out these resources sooner.

I am still learning to use and maneuver the site, but I hope to have more posts up soon.

Thank you for following us!

Curtis it's so good to see you and Georgia here! Thank you for visiting the Forums and introducing yourself. I love the blog you started and look forward to getting to know you two.

I can't believe she was at the shelter that long. Thank you for showing Georgia that not all humans are awful. She is so lucky to find her way to you!

So you're a dog walker eh? What's that like? I could sure use a big ol pack of dogs to walk about now, since we are dog-less for a while icon_cry

Just a little pupdate.  I came across the Tripawd organization through Instagram.  It was through Tripawds that we were introduced to VOSM.  On November 18th we had the privilege of sitting in on a zoom meeting discussing prothesis and Tripawds.  It was during that meeting that we learned that canine rehabilitation practitioners existed and that Georgia and I would benefit from a consult. Not only did they exist, but through Tripawds we would be able apply for reimbursement of the appointment.

There are two rehabilitation centers I'm my immediate area.  Unfortunately immediate appointments are not available.  We will most likely take her to Ohio State University.  They have the shorter wait time and we have a history with them with our other dogs.  The woman I spoke with was very helpful and informative, but they currently have a wait list for new patients.  They hope to get her in mid January.

I hesitate with this next part.  To be completely honest, we are grossly uneducated on how to properly care for her.  I think that's ultimately why we are here.  My previous dog Gia was on Vedco Flex 2500 Glucosamine when she passed.  When we got Georgia, we continued her on that regimen.  She has had this supplement every day since 2012. I take Glucosamine myself and I am a firm believer in its benefits.  We have also worked hard to keep her at her target weight, keep her nails trimmed, and her paws clean. After we watched the Tripawd presentation in November we also started her on a fish oil supplement for Omega 3's.

She goes for walks often.  Not often in the winter.  We go until first flop and then we head home.  Usually bout 20 minutes total.  She gets a lot of exercise playing with Shiloh as well.  We have never thought about going further than that until now.  After sitting through the meeting I learned there is a lot more that we can and should be doing for her.

Georgia is actually doing great.  We just want to get her into a rehab professional so that we can squeeze every last minute of time with her.  I will certainly keep everyone posted when we finally get in!Image Enlarger

Oh that face! Every time I see her I just want to jump through my screen and smooch her!

You are so not grossly uneducated about how to care for her. Really! Most of us have been in your shoes before, we didn't start out knowing how to care for a Tripawd, including yours truly. We've made many mistakes through the years with Jerry and Wyatt and are learning as we go thanks to vet professionals who are willing to share their knowledge with our community.

Be proud! You have already made tons of progress by sitting in on Dr. Canapp's webinar (so happy you were there!) and now taking action to help her be as strong and healthy as possible. She has a lot of good years ahead thanks to your motivation.smiley_clap

Yep....smooching that mug right through the screen!  She's such a heart melter❤

Ditto Jerry.  You are doing an outstanding  job of giving  Georgia THE best of possible!!  Joint supplements, assessment by a Rehab Spec..you are way ahead of the game!  Love that she shows you when she's tired and gos for uou for recognizing  that.  One way you can make the "walk" last a little longer....sort of....is to get a wagon or stroller so she can hop in for the trip back.  She can rest up a few minites, walk a few minites, hop back in for a rest, then walk....you get the point.

Thanks for the picture.  That quilt looks good on her😎
