This is actually the start of my story and we will see what the out come is. I have been a dog owner my whole life. I am 24 and love dogs and i lost my dog a little over a year ago. Im currently in afghanistan and i see everyday how these dogs are mistreated and abused and it tugs on the heart strings. A vet tech friend of my recently helped with an amputation of  female dog who has come up for adoption her name is Flurry and lost her leg due to abuse. I want to adopt her. Currently trying to talk a family member into helping by taking care of her till i am finished with my deployment in 4 months. I have been doing research on owning a tripod and i have fallen even more in love with her and with the idea of helping her by rescuing her and giving her a normal life. Just wanted to tell my story for now and get some input. I will update my story as it progresses.

i would like some tips on care and general life of owning a tripod so feel free to message with your comments 🙂

wish us luck 🙂

Good luck. Please consider registering to take full advantage of all the resources this community has to offer.

You'll find lots of recovery and care tips in Jerry's Required Reading List, and for immediate answers to the most common dog amputation questions download the new Tripawds e-book Three Legs and A Spare.

Welcome KC - thanks for your service, first of all. Secondly, that is great that you want to be a tripawd pawrent. I highly recommend it! It is amazing to have a tripawd pup - dogs teach us so much about dealing with adversity with grace and acceptance.

I will second the referral to the required reading and the ebook. Both helped us a lot.

You will find lots of great support here so if you have specific questions, there is most likely someone who can help.

We would love to see pics of Flurry if possible! Keep us posted on how things go.
All the best to you and Flurry,
Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Bless you KC, for protecting our country, and for your kindness to the abused dogs and to Flurry.  I love her name 🙂  How old is Flurry?  I am glad she will be going to someone like you, who is excited to start a life with her!

I would say learning doggie massage is pretty important, and teaching them that just because they can still jump off of tall buildings and do 50 mile an hour headers into the sand, doesn't mean they should!

We hope you post pictures of her here, we love dog pics!

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us.  Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.

Hi KC,

Welcome to Tripawds.  I hope you register and join us permanently.

And thank you for your service.

Having had a tripawd for about 4 years, and now an adopted pug who was abused, I think you will find that helping Flurry recover from the abuse will be more challenging than having a tripawd. I bet she is probably getting around fine already, hopefully she is one of those pups who really blossom once they are in a loving home.

Check out the links provided, read more on this site if you can, and let us know what specific questions you have.

Get through your deployment safely and hopefully home soon with Flurry.

Where is home?

Welcome KC to our little family,

First, thank you for your service!  Second, thank you for watching out for our furry friends in a not-so-dog-friendly area!

I adopted a tripawd and had her for 12  wonderful years!  (she was born deformed but was also neglected by her first owner)  She lived large!  She never missed a beat as a dog!  Only until she got older was it tough for her to get around but she still did. But gosh, that was 10 1/2 years into her life with me before I even noticed she was old.  She jumped on the couch even as an old dog and she still went up and down the stairs in our house until the day she died.

Of course, there are some modifications to a lifestyle.  But not really that much.  They don't have the endurance like a 4 legged dog but outside of that, our life was pretty normal.

I adopted my Comet without any insight to having a 3-legged and I never regretted it one minute nor did I ever really think about her being 3-legged especially when she was young.  It was who she was.  She was the best thing ever to come along in my life!  I'd give anything to have her back ...but dogs can't live forever.

Stay safe and please keep us posted if possible!

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

KC, welcome! We are so hoppy to have a service member here, thank you for doing all you do for the U.S.!

What an awesome thing to even be thinking of right now. We have our paws crossed that your special pup is waiting for you when you return home.  Tell us a little more about her...how old is she? What kind of breed is she? These things can play into how her life as a tripawd goes, but overall, the two biggest recommendations I have are: 1) keep her lean and thinner than most dogs her size (extra weight on a Tripawd is extremely detrimental) and 2) let her be a dog and have a good time, but be sure to keep a close eye on her activities so that she doesn't place undue stress on her joints. The older a Tripawd gets, the more issues she may experience, but they usually won't debilitate a dog if proper care (i.e., gentle stretching, balance games, core strenthening exercises, etc) are part of everyday life.

Oh there's so much to say! Tell us more about her and keep us posted, we hope you get to become a pack!

thank you all for the tips and the wonderful thoughts. Home is in Missouri and i will be headed there soon for my leave but ill be back home for good in April. As for an update on Flurry she is recovering right now at her foster home and is 51lbs. She is a Pyrenees Mix and was taken from a kill shelter pregnant with Pups by a program called "mostly muts" that rescues pregnant moms and adopts the pups and the mom to good homes. My mother would be the one to take care of her when she comes available and i have talked her into going to meet Flurry for the first time before i come home on leave and then we will go together once im there. Not sure how to add pictures on here i do have one and will post it when i can.

i do my best to look out for the dogs here even if its slipping them a piece of food here or there. We have to be careful because a lot of the dogs here have rabies...wish i could adopt one of them but we are not allowed to.

thanks again and i will keep everyone updated
