Waiting for biopsy results and wondering...

Hi, I hope this is okay to post here - our 7 year-old mixed breed (maybe a golden retriever mix? she looks a little bit like a golden but colored like bernese. The place from where I adopted her said her mom was a border collie, so who knows?) has been limping since March. My wife and I live in two different states during the school year (we're college professors) and the dog's first veterinarian did an x-ray, saw nothing abnormal, and diagnosed her with arthritis. He put her on NSAIDs which helped a bit. Summer came, and I saw my dog's other vet, and she added gabapentin and continued the rimadyl. When we came back for a second follow-up last week (her fifth trip!) the vet decided to take another x-ray and saw clear abnormalities (a tumor?) around her distal femur. She mentioned OSA, but she and a radiologist said that if it's OSA, it's the strangest one she's ever seen, though that it was still a real possibility, but couldn't be certain, so recommended a biopsy. We're waiting on biopsy results now. My question - she doesn't show ANY other symptoms - she's active, eating, and generally the same as always. No weight loss. Is this typical with dogs with OSA after four months without treatment? We used to live in Utah, though it's been 3 years - is it possible for Valley Fever to manifest symptoms after years away from the southwest? I asked these questions to the doctor, but she didn't want to make any guesses, but here I am, waiting, and wondering. The doctor mentioned that it could be a less aggressive form of cancer, too. We're really happy she's doing well after the biopsy and is in good spirits, but of course worried, so curious if anybody has anybody information to share. Thank you!

Hi Matt, welcome. I'm so sorry you're here in this situation, we understand your worry completely. It's so hard to keep calm when you're waiting for the biopsy report, but it's all anyone can do until you know for sure what you might be dealing with. I'm assuming the biopsy was a needle aspirate biopsy, not a bone biopsy (which requires general anesthesia)?

We hope it's not osteo, but I'll be upfront and tell you that your story is very familiar, symptoms, treatment and all. Most of us went through a long process of eliminating other problems like osteo and for many it was even longer than four months. It's agonizing for everyone, we know, but vets don't like to jump to conclusions until everything is ruled out. Just try not to make yourself crazy right now. Since we aren't vets we can't begin to say it's this or that, so do your best to have a good weekend with her until you get the results back.

If she's not showing signs right now, that's good! It means that whatever it is, your vet is doing a good job managing symptoms. Sounds like you're working with a full-service group that will take great care of you in treating what this is. Hang in there OK? We're here for you.

Thanks for the kind words, Jerry! We're expecting that diagnosis, but hoping! It's hard to imagine she's sick because she hasn't really changed (besides the limp, of course.) She had a bone biopsy--it's what the vet wanted to do, though reading through these forums, I might have made a different decision. She seems to have handled it like a champ, though.

Hi, sorry to hear about your troubles. It took a long time for our diagnosis too; I noticed Nitro's "ankle" was swollen last march, and finally got enough courage to get it looked at it April. After 4 biopsies, it was determined to be "sarcoma, fibrous variety". He had surgery June 17, 2014. It took five more weeks for the biopsy of the leg to come back, which they now said was osteosarcoma. (I'm not totally convinced of this diagnosis however). The waiting was excruciating! Good news is, he's doing great today 13 mos post amp surgery.

Stay strong and positive! There's time enough to worry when you have answers. Good luck.

Matt hang in there.  I know it impossible not to worry and go through all the possibilities BUT try to put that aside until you get the results and enjoy all the time with her.  What is her name?  She is not worrying, and does not want you to worry either.

Thanks for your messages! They really help. I'm SO glad I found this website. Her name's Swayze--she's a sweetheart, and is anxious to be able to chase tennis balls soon, after she heals from her biopsy. Her sister is a small medium (or large small?) australian shephard names Stella. She's a double merle, so was born deaf. They're both rescue dogs from Utah.

You are so welcome. And extra special too for adopting Swayze! Do you sign to her? I just wrote about teaching our dogs to communicate in sign language.

Don't have any regrets about the bone biopsy, your vet did what is usual when a diagnosis is uncertain. Hang in there and know that if it is OSA you're catching it early and have a great team on your hands to care for her. But we sure hope it's not cancer of course!

Yes! She knows a bunch, though not nearly as many as some dogs. She's smart enough to know that when she's not looking at us, we can't tell her no! Just to be clear, Stella's our deaf dog, and Swayze's the one with the bum leg. Stella really relies on her big sister!

Reading your post about teaching signs...

Hi, all - So the vet has come back with a diagnosis of chondrosarcoma, though they are not 100% sure. It's definitely cancer, but because of her continued good health, they think it's something slower than osteosarcoma. So, making an appt to see the oncologist. Sad, but happy to be narrowing it down. Thank you all SO much. I'll keep you posted, and probably have more updates as we approach likely amputation.

Here's a picture - Swayze after her biopsy, Stella hanging out:

Sweeeeet photo! Love how they're touching each other.

Sometimes there is a relief in knowing what you are probably dealing with. You can do your research and formulate your treatment plan so, as Pam said, you can focus on what needs to be done. Not sure it's any consolation,or.....no, it's not good news, but it is a lot better than it could be!

Stay connected...we are here to help you and precious Swayze!

Hugs and extra treats ro all!

Exactly what Sally said!

Many years ago I had terrible, terrible pain in my shoulder. For 5 years I went to a total of approximately 10 doctors before they discovered I had a bone tumor on my collar bone joint. I was so happy when they told me they had identified the problem that knowing I had a bone tumor didn't phase me one bit. In fact, I think it was my happiness and relief that helped me "cure" myself. The tumor was removed and I've been free of any after-affects for nearly 30 years.

Bottom line, it's so very difficult to focus positively on something you can't identify. Knowing is truly winning half the battle.

The collective wisdom here is amazing, I couldn't agree more. Information allows us to make confident decisions, which helps to decrease our stress level and know that we are doing the very best we can. Nobody wants a cancer diagnosis but it's easier when you know what you're potentially dealing with.

Let us know what the onco says. In the meantime here's a blog post about this type of cancer:

Canine Chondrosarcoma and Chemotherapy

Love that photo! Such a sweet pack. Let's see more pics!
