Our female Doberman, Twist, is 7 years 4 months.

I took her to the vet last Friday because she did not want to sit. She knows the command, but looked uncomfortable when doing it. No limping, no yelping, nothing - she was chasing squirrels, playing with our Doberman puppy...normal except for not wanting to sit.

X-rays showed a lesion in her rear right upper femoral head. As of Saturday, her chest x-ray is clear.

We headed to the specialist and he is 90% convinced it is synovial cell sarcoma. From the destruction he saw on the radiographs and in the actual leg, this has been going on for at least two months.

She had a biopsy done (jamshidi procedure) yesterday with three samples taken from her upper femoral bone and one from her joint capsule. They will take a week to decalcify so we can know type and grade of cancer.

She is at home resting now. We have Tramadol and Rimadyl.

My question is this: from what I read, this is a relatively rare cancer in this spot. Does anyone have any ideas here?  Has anyone dealt with this? The amputation surgery is very aggressive -they take the leg and part of the pelvis because you need very wide margins. I am not sure we are even candidates.

Any feedback would be lovely.

We are previous posters. We lost our male Doberman to Osteosarcoma on 10.31.2016 - two months after diagnosis and amputation.

I am so sorry to hear you are facing this sort of circumstance so soon after losing your wonderful, majestic boy whom I remember well.  No advice on this cancer, but sending up the very best wishes for dear Twist and you.

Lisa, Minneapolis

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly.  His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.

I'm so sorry, what a shock to your family, I can only imagine how hard it is to deal with.

Try not to let the hemipelvectomy recommendation scare you too much. It does sound drastic but we've had many members' dogs go through that surgery and do just fine.

If you're at all in doubt, you can always get another opinion. Also, you can have the vet send your case to a teaching university to have them look at it before proceeding. A second or even third opinion can bring you so much peace of mind right now.

It really stinks you're dealing with cancer again. But try to look at it this way: at least you are more aware and knowledgeable than you were before. You have more tools in your arsenal to fight whatever it is that's ahead and your sweet Twist has a great ally on her side.

Here's a post about Questions to Ask Your Oncologist that may help you get the information you need to feel better about proceeding with any recommended treatments.
