Hi everyone,

koko is scheduled for amputation tomorrow morning at Univer Of Penn. And I am unbelievably scared, nervous and jumping out of my skin. She has osteosarcoma of the left forelimb. Shes 12 and large breed although slim. The things that has me so twisted is she has so much life left in her. Other than holding up her leg she doesn’t even seem to be in pain. I know this is her best chance of survival. But the risk weighs heavy on my heart! Prayers, encouragement etc are welcome I hope we get through this.

Hang on to us, okay!  We understand  ten thousand percent all the emotions  you are going through right now!!  Unless you've been on thos journey, no one could understand how we would go to the ends of the earth for our dogs and cats.

You ARE doing the right thing for your sweetgirl.  What's her name? You ARE giving  her a chance at a quality pain  free life full of loving and spoiling and snuggling.

And she is holding up her leg because it hurts!  Dogs are so stoic and when they get tonthe point of limping  and holding the leg up it is a sign of pain.  She will be so Happy when that bum leg is gone!

Let is know as questions arise.  Not sure how mich research  you've done here, but a couple of tips;

Non slip scatter rugs for traction   if you jave jardwoods.

Raised food and water bowls to prevent  straining.

A firm bed as opposed to squishy soft.  Firmer GED Mich easier to sit up and stand.

When you go to pick your sweet pup up at the clinic, be all smiles, upbeat and co.  Don even bothermto draw attention  to the jncision. Just look into her druggy eyes and tell her what a good girl she is and she's going home!

Deinking and peeing are impor.  She may not jave mich of an appetite  and pooping may take a few days.

She will recover at her own pace.  Try not to compare  her recovery with others.  Generally, not always, larger dogs take a little extra time to get their sea legs.  No problem.

Not stairs, no jumping or running. Only short leashed potty breaks and back to bed for rest.

Generally dogs come home with Gaba, an antiinflmmatory  and an antibiotic.   Some have a pain patch.  Regardless, almost always dogs have a vit of a crash after all the hospital  meds are out of their system  in a couple of days.  That's  when tweaking the pain meds may need a bit of adjusting with Vet approval.

Recovery  is no picnic for a week or two.  But when the sparkle starts ro come back and you see your girl rockin' her tripawd life without pain, you will be thrilled and in complete  awe of your amazing pupper.

Won't  say get some sleep....just will say ear some junk food I stead!  It helps calm the nerves!  Chocolate  really helps too!

We are here by uour side, okay?  You are not alone. We'll look for your update tomorrow.

Hugs

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Hi Koko and family. You got some great advice from Sally! We totally understand how you feel. So much of this decision weighs on us, we feel so responsible for taking that leg away. But you know what? Amputation isn't doing something to her, it's doing something for her. You are taking away that awful pain so she won't have to hold her leg up in pain anymore. You are giving her a good chance at a happier life without hurting. That is such a gift. I know it doesn't feel like it right now, but in time you will see it.

You can do this. Remember, your emotions will set the tone for her recovery. The more pawsitive and strong you are, the more she will feel it, and reflect it back to you. She needs your strength now more than ever to make this recovery smooth.

She is in great hands at UPENN, they are fantastic vets! I know they will take great care of her and make sure she has everything she needs to heal. Now, the rest is up to you.

Read our What to Expect articles to prepare. Keep calm. Ask whatever questions you have, we will do our best to answer them.

Do you have others who can help you with her? Are your floors slip-proof with traction ? That is super important. Use the time she is at the hospital to get your home ready. See our Tripawds Recovery Shopping List to get things ready.

We are sending lots of love and pawsitivity your way! Keep us posted.

Thank you so much Sally and Jerry. This really helped I picked up flat non slip rugs for her and a flat bed. Im lifting my emotions to be ready for her return home. I guess the other thing that made it difficult was my family does not support my decision. Said it is barbaric to cut her leg off. So, with that said I didn’t tell them so I could save myself from negative energy the night before. Im hoping that when they see her in a week they appreciate still being able to kiss her and see her play with toys. Do most people pick their pet up the next day? Or in 2 days?

Good job of preparing!

While friends and family are "well meaning"  when they speak out against  amputation,  remember,  YOU have done the research, YOU have become well informed, YOU have spoken with the professionals.   They have done none of this!  You know thst this is the solution that gives Koko a chance at a pain free quaility life!

Not that you need to engage  in any firther dialogue,  but you could point  out all the above.  Additionally,  you could say that if any of them needed to have a limb operation  to relieve their pain and help them get on with life, you would support their decision.   You 2ould never suggest euthanasia!!!

Now as far as overnight stays, etc.  Yes, it is best to stay at least one night at a fullh staged clinic.  Most dogs do go home the next day, but some dogs need to stay another twomor three days.  It's generally based on how mobile they are, able to stand, etc.  No set "rule".  Just depends  on the individual  dog.

Koko is very lucky to have you as his hooman!💖

Oh man it's so hard to go through this without family support, I'm sorry you're catching flack over this. Unfortunately it's not that unusual. And most people come around once they see how happy the dog is. Your family may too (I hope!). But fear not, we are here as your Tripawd family and we get what you are going through. We will never judge you, just 100% support here!

Most people's new Tripawd stays at least one night, as Sally mentioned. Our Jerry was there 24 hours then came home with us.

Good job getting prepared! Let us know how things are going.

Aww yay! That's wonderful news. How is she doing tonight? And how are YOU holding up? Remember, your pawsitive tone sets the pace for recovery. Be as upbeat as you can and try not to get discouraged. She will reflect that right back to you.

What pain medications did she come home with?

This is how adding images to the Forums works.

  • Upload pics to a photo sharing site like imgur.com or your own Tripawds blog (https://tripawd...../supporter). Pictures and video have to be hosted (live) somewhere other than in the forums.
  • Once the photo is uploaded somewhere, right click and copy the Image URL or just copy the image if you’re on a phone
  • Return to your Tripawds Forum post and paste the image URL (or the image itself) in your post. It should automatically appear.

If you’d like help figuring out the process let me know.
