DAMN!!!! Pardon my language, but that's how I feel right now.  Dozer was coming up on his 1 year anniversary amputation March of this year and was doing great until 2/22/12. ( For those of you now familiar with D. his amputation was because of bilateral hip dysplasia, multiple surgeries, reconstruction, relocation, failed FHO, requiring amp. of his right rear leg.)  Worst case scenario he started to limp and favor his right front leg.  Meds, rest, and other supportive care did not give him relief. Long story short.... he has osteosarcoma of the proximal radius.

Okay...amputation not a viable option.  We are now heading out to Colorado State University for radiation and chemo.  We have a 50% chance of survival 1-5 years and a 10% chance of full recovery.

We have encountered some wonderful professionals there and feel good about our chances.  We are praying for localization, no mets. exclamation Please send us good tail wagging vibes in the week to come.exclamation

Good news, he is comfortable. Still eating, and in good spirits. Tries to chase the cat and all.  We have a "Help 'em Up Harness"  which is the best device since sliced bread.  Makes it so much easier to help a 130lb Saint Bernard, gives him stability that he won't fall, keeps weight of his bad leg and gives me something to hold him with and not throw my back out in the process.clap

damn is a good response.  we're so sorry to read this, after all you guys have been through.  glad he is comforable, and in good spirits - dozer doesn't know he has cancer, and only knows to try and enjoy the day (he's lucky that way) and you are stuck with all the worry.  hope you get good results at CSU, it's a wonderful vet school, a place of miracles.  sending good wishes and our best ET juju.

Sending good wishes and pawsitive thoughts for good news from CSU!

All the best. Keep us posted,
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

I'm so sorry! That is a tough spot to be in, but your dedication and love is beyond measure and will get you through this tough time. CSU is the best vet school in the world, you couldn't be in better hands (and paws) there. We also have quite a few members in the area so if you need anything, post it in the Forums and I know you'll find help.

Good luck and keep us posted OK? Hugs to you and Dozer.

Thanks Jerry. We will be 1200 miles from home, we may need some resource help.  But feel good about the trip so far, pet friendly hotel and all.

Wow, that's such a haul. You are amazing pawrents.

Keep in mind our friend Connie does medical boarding for CSU patients at her Canine Health Resort. We wrote about her in this blog post. Call her if you're in a bind and need a place to leave him in good hands while you're there. She's terrific.

Deanna responded right away and got me in contact with Connie her counterpart in Ft. Collins. She cares for the dogs getting radiation. Also has a kennel. Thanks again.

I'm about an hour from CSU. If you want to connect, talk on the phone, have lunch, whatever--send me a message and we'll work it out. I can drive to CSU easily if you want someone to say more than "damn" to. I have a foul mouth when it's appropriate, so that's no problem. blush

Oh, I'm so sorry for the cancer diagnosis. But it's so great you have such a great medical team.

What incredible pawrents you are to your boy. Thinking of you all during this time and sending extra super charged healing energy to Dozer.

I think I'd be saying a little more than just "Damn" if I were in your shoes.  I hate how unfair life is at times.  We'll be sending you our best wishes for a safe trip and hope that your buddy, Dozer, ends up on the good side of the statistics.

Best wishes,

Aww Dozer, life is just not fair sometimes. I can relate to the feeling- I was sort of in your paws when Maggie was diagnosed with her second cancer and the recommended treatment was just not possible.

Your boy is such a trooper- I say he blows the stats away!
