We have a 12 1/2 year old Aussie girl who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma that has metastasized to her lungs (not extensive).  We got the diagnosis in December but it probably could have been diagnosed a few months earlier.  We are faced with two options, amputation to relieve bone pain (and then possibly chemotherapy) or palliative radiation.  She is still active but slowing down.  Anyone have experience with this situation?

Hi and welcome. Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog's diagnosis. It's a tough decision that many here have faced through the years. Some oncologists will suggest amputating anyways, while others will say no way. This article by vet oncologist Dr. Joanne Intile talks about deciding when mets are involved:

Great Osteosarcoma Article: Diagnosis is Cancer, Now for the Treatment

Some dogs go on to have a great quality of life after amputation, even with metastasis. Zeus' story is an example. Here's more about him.

Some dogs get radiation therapy, which buys quality of life for a while. Here's Hazel's story.

What does your dog's oncologist recommend? Have you gotten more than one opinion? That can make all the difference.
