My dog Howard has his right front leg amupated 3 weeks ago and we just got the histopath back. Our surgeon was surprised to see it came back as primary histosarcoma of the bone. He is referring us to a oncologist but did not have much to say as it is not common at all. I’m just curious if anyone else had this diagnosis, and did you do chemo? How was it tolerated and how long was your dog able to survive. We are very overwhelmed at the moment. Any input would be great. Thanks !!

Welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I'm sorry you got that diagnosis- it's not common around here. I'm assuming you mean hemangiosarcoma- it's in your title but your text says histosarcoma.

There have been a few here with that diagnosis- but of course I'm not thinking of any of them now.

Oh wait- Butchey Hudson! He survived with hemangio for more than two years.  Here is Butchey's Blog.  He crossed the Bridge back in 2013, the link is the beginning of his blog.

Sorry don’t know how I duplicated the text there. But yes I mean hemangiosarcoma. I will look up the other doggies blog to get some info. We just want as much good quality time with our guy as possible. He is a sweet big guy who just loves to lay around and cuddle.

I'm so sorry to hear about the diagnosis. As Karen mentioned we have had quite a few others who have dealt with it. One of the first dogs with hemangiosarcoma that our Jerry blogged about here was Rocco:

There's even a video interview with his people, here:

Yes, the statistics are depressing for this diagnosis. But please try not to focus on them. Many dogs will beat those statistics! How is your pup doing otherwise? My guess is that he's only focused on getting stronger and happy to be rid of that bad leg. The best thing you can do for him is to follow his lead! Be More Dog . Live in the moment as he does, and you will find this situation easier to cope with.

Meanwhile this blog post may help you get ready for your oncology appointment:

Please keep us posted, we are here to help!

Welcome Howard.  Sorry we had to meet here.  I responded with what little I know on the other Hemangio thread, but there is reason for optimism as long as there's no visceral (spleen/liver/lung) involvement.

OMG Karen, thank you for the link to Butchey's blog . . . Ann can't figure out why I'm laughing so hard, and Jet even came over to make sure everything's okay.  Just a great story, wonderfully written.

FWIW, Butchey was on Adriamycin.  That's another name for Doxyrubicin.

Thank you everyone. Howard’s chest radiographs were clear 1 week before surgery and he seems great now. Gets around very well on 3 legs and is down to 92 lbs! His appetite is wonderful and he acts like normal Howard, just a bit tired and pants after walking around the yard at the end of the night to find the perfect spot to pee and poo. The oncologist starts at the specialist in 2 weeks and our surgeon hopes to get Howard in right away. Just hope we get in, and no mets are seen.

Oh we will keep our fingers and paws crossed too! So happy to hear Howard is enjoying life again and back to his new normal!

Howard has graduated from the "Presentation and Diagnosis" phase. Yay! When you have new news for us please start a new topic in "Treatment and Recovery" so we can follow along OK? Look forward to hearing back.
